feat: follow authors and star commits from the keyboard - #597
Keyboard navigation can toggle follow without opening the profile preview, using the same shortcut wiring as reply and quote.
Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>
Added unit tests for the f shortcut in tests/Unit/CommitAuthorFollow.test.tsx (expose shortcut, skip own commits, guest sign-in, follow/unfollow, preview resolve). Also hooked that suite (and FollowState) into bun run test:unit so CI runs them.
A stale preview must not overwrite a follow confirmed by another control while the request was in flight.

Removed the package.jsontest:unit change. The new tests stay in tests/Unit/CommitAuthorFollow.test.tsx and are typechecked via tests/tsconfig.json, matching how other .tsx unit files are handled.
Keyboard navigation can toggle a star the same way as reply and quote, so j/k then s works without reaching for the mouse.

feat: follow a focused commit's author with f
feat: follow authors and star commits from the keyboard
Oct 20, 2026
Commit cards for user-authored commits now provide an f keyboard action to follow or unfollow the author. Follow-state helpers use shared state or a user preview, then update follow state through follow or unfollow visits.
Changes: Commit author follow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Follow-state resolution and toggle resources/js/hooks/use-shared-state.ts, resources/js/components/follow-button.tsx, resources/js/components/commit-author-follow-button.tsx, tests/Unit/CommitAuthorFollow.test.tsx
Shared state and user previews resolve an author’s follow status. The commit follow button redirects guests to sign in and uses the resolved status to follow or unfollow the author. Tests cover state resolution, toggle actions, and pending-state handling.
Commit shortcut wiring and documentation resources/js/components/commit-card.tsx, resources/js/components/keyboard-shortcuts-dialog.tsx, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
User-authored commit cards render the follow button with the f shortcut. The shortcuts dialog and knowledge base document the action.
Shortcut and fixture test updates resources/js/components/commit-star-button.tsx, tests/Unit/CommitStarButton.test.tsx, tests/Unit/NotificationIndex.test.tsx
Star-button tests verify its shortcut attribute. The star button’s accessibility attributes are reordered without changing their values. A notification fixture explicitly types its empty body-segment array.
dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1247: Adds the s shortcut for starring focused commits and changes overlapping commit-action code.

Docstring Coverage
Docstring coverage is inconclusive: files from earlier reviews still need to be rechecked within the check's analysis limits. Not blocking.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#847] requires that pressing s star the commit highlighted by j/k navigation. At head, focusedCommitAction in resources/js/hooks/use-keyboard-shortcuts.ts finds the button[aria-keyshortcuts="s"] inside the focused [data-commit] and clicks it. The s key is handled before the global g sequence. The star button in commit-star-button.tsx already carries aria-keyshortcuts={keyShortcut}. This PR only moves the aria-label line above aria-keyshortcuts. The attribute values are unchanged, so this edit has no behavior effect. commit-card.tsx gains only the CommitAuthorFollowButton import and render (f). The star wiring and its s key come from code at the merge base. tests/Unit/CommitStarButton.test.tsx adds a check that aria-keyshortcuts="s" renders. The help dialog lists s. The requirement is met at head. Limit: this review did not re-read the base commit-card.tsx render that passes keyShortcut="s" to CommitStarButton. That link rests on the prior review's verification and on the absence of any star change in this PR's commit-card.tsx diff.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
[#847] covers only starring the highlighted commit with s. The PR also adds a follow-author feature on f, which no linked issue requests. Unrelated changes include: new resources/js/components/commit-author-follow-button.tsx; the CommitAuthorFollowButton render in commit-card.tsx; resources/js/components/follow-button.tsx (resolveIsFollowing, toggleFollow); resources/js/hooks/use-shared-state.ts (peekSharedState); the f entries in keyboard-shortcuts-dialog.tsx and KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md; and tests/Unit/CommitAuthorFollow.test.tsx. The s work does not depend on any of these. tests/Unit/NotificationIndex.test.tsx changes body_segments: [] to [] as Commit['body_segments'] in an image-only fixture. This test-only cast has no connection to the s shortcut. Both groups are demonstrated unrelated to #847.
Resolution
Move the follow-author feature to a separate pull request, or link it to an issue that requests it. This covers commit-author-follow-button.tsx, the CommitAuthorFollowButton render in commit-card.tsx, the follow-button.tsx changes, peekSharedState in use-shared-state.ts, the f entries in keyboard-shortcuts-dialog.tsx and KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md, and tests/Unit/CommitAuthorFollow.test.tsx. In keyboard-shortcuts-dialog.tsx, keep only the s entry. Revert the tests/Unit/NotificationIndex.test.tsx cast unless the author shows a concrete dependency on the s work. Keep the commit-star-button.tsx attribute reorder if desired, the CommitStarButton.test.tsx shortcut test, and the s help entry.

Stop reply star buttons from claiming the focused-commit s shortcut, and make toggleFollow share FollowButton's pending key and cache flush so f cannot double-mutate the same author.

Pass the follow visit options to the shortcut path.
CommitAuthorFollowButton calls toggleFollow, but toggleFollow does not set X-Follow-Request, X-Inertia-Reset, or X-Log-Through. The client follow-request hook therefore does not queue this visit, and the following log does not receive the reset and range metadata used to replace its infinite-scroll commits.
Pass followVisitOptions(component, log, commits) to toggleFollow, spread it into router.visit, and preserve the asynchronous visit behavior used by FollowButton. The follow controller returns back() and does not read X-Follow-Request; this is a client-side coordination contract.

FollowButton now writes is_following on start; the profile helper must match so f skips the preview when state is already known.

Production renamed commit.user to commit.author and added organization authors; the shortcut only applies to people.

Disable the follow shortcut for deleted commits.
CommitAuthorFollowButton is outside the inert={wasDeleted} wrappers. When the commit is deleted, the keyboard handler still finds this button and calls .click(), so f can follow or unfollow the deleted commit's author. Render this button only when !wasDeleted, or place it inside the inert subtree. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
IMPORTANT
Review the replacement and indentation, then test before committing.

Show feedback for non-throttling preview failures.
If the preview returns HTTP 500, this branch returns null without a message. The f shortcut then stops without telling the user why. Show an error for unsuccessful responses when toastWhenThrottled(response) returns false. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Recheck shared state after parsing the preview.
If another follow control finishes while response.json() is pending, Line 179 replaces its newer follow state with the older preview result. The next f press can choose the wrong follow endpoint. Recheck isFollowingKey(user) after the JSON await and use an existing value instead of writing the preview result. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
