On a commit page, pressing r opens the reply composer for that page's commit, even when focus is outside the commit card. If keyboard focus is inside another commit, the shortcut replies to that commit instead. Elsewhere, it still works only when a commit is focused.

Closes #984.

(I clicked j, r, then went into show post, then clicked r; trust me 😁)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Keyboard shortcuts now target the commit containing the active element when available.
    • The reply shortcut can fall back to the main commit when no commit is active, and prioritizes the focused commit when appropriate.
    • Quote shortcuts work with focused and unfocused commits.
    • Shortcuts avoid actions within inactive commits and do nothing when no eligible action is available.
    • When the reply shortcut finds an open composer, it focuses the text area instead of triggering its button.

@MrPunyapal This overlaps with my #1048, which does the same thing; yours was first and has a test, so I'm closing mine. One note for whoever merges: #1044 (mobile reply button) adds a data-focused attribute on the focused card for the same purpose. Once this lands I'll switch #1044 to your data-focused-commit so there's one attribute.

The r shortcut now uses a shared helper to select a non-inert reply action or eligible reply composer. When focus is outside a commit, it can use the marked page commit. The shortcut hook focuses a returned textarea and clicks other actions.

Commit cards expose data-focused-commit when focused. commitActionForShortcut selects a non-inert shortcut action or, for r, an eligible reply composer. The hook focuses textareas and clicks other actions. Tests cover fallback, focused-commit selection, quote behavior, missing or inert commits, and nested composers.

The reply shortcut change is functionally reasonable, but the hook's return type excludes the textarea it can now return, so the project's type check fails. Widen the return type before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix: use focused commit for shortcuts on commit pages" matches the main change. The PR makes the r shortcut target the page's commit when focus is outside a commit card, and it targets the focused commit when focus is inside one. The title is specific, uses a conventional fix: prefix, and is one sentence. It does not mention the reply composer focus behavior, but that is a secondary detail.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #984 requires r on a commit page to open that commit's reply box. CommitCard now marks the focused commit with data-focused-commit. commitActionForShortcut uses the focused commit first and the page commit as the r fallback. The keyboard handler focuses an open TEXTAREA, and the added tests cover the fallback and focused-commit behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #984. The marker and shortcut resolution implement commit target selection. The keyboard-handler update and unit tests support the required reply behavior. No unrelated product changes appear in the pull request summary.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 40.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 5 functions across 4 files.

Resolution

Rename the test to use the unit-test glob.

test:unit matches only tests/Unit/*.test.ts, so CommitPageShortcuts.test.tsx is not executed. The regression tests therefore do not run in the composer test:unit CI workflow.

Exercise the hook’s focused-card lookup.

The test calls commitActionForShortcut directly. It does not call focusedCommitAction or simulate document.querySelector('[data-focused-commit]'). A regression in the hook lookup or route-marker selection could therefore pass this test. Add one focused assertion through the hook’s keyboard-event entrypoint.

Cover the hook-to-marker wiring.

tests/Unit/CommitPageShortcuts.test.ts calls commitActionForShortcut directly and supplies the page commit as an argument. It does not exercise the keydown listener, document.querySelector('[data-focused-commit]'), or the CommitCard marker. These tests would still pass if the hook stopped supplying the focused page commit.

No inspected test covers this path. The current test setup has no browser integration harness or script. Extract the handler data flow into a testable function, or add a focused DOM test when an integration harness is introduced.

Include HTMLTextAreaElement in the return type.

focusedCommitAction returns commitActionForShortcut, which can return an HTMLTextAreaElement. Its current return type excludes that value, so tsc --noEmit reports a type error. The test:types script runs this check.
