Collection invalidation depended on independently evictable counters, so losing a counter could strand caching and amplify console SQL. Replace that ledger with one atomic writer record in the existing cache. Its CAS version is the epoch; no separate epoch value is maintained.

Every writer completion changes the identity, including a writer whose registration was evicted. This retires pre-commit fills while preserving newer live writers. Reads apply their own writer timeout without deleting registrations another reader still considers live.

Remove the legacy counter protocol, owner/registration sidecars and cache-5 compatibility path. Unsupported adapters bypass coordinated caching. Require stable cache ^6.0, locked to 6.0.0, with no development dependency or alias. The cache primitives and circuit-breaker fix are in appwrite/appwrite#15134. No separate Dragonfly or connection DSN is required.

Validation: 13,140 unit tests / 199,561 assertions, both PHPStan configurations and Pint pass with stable cache 6.0.0. Four native Redis/Dragonfly/SQLite regressions cover state eviction and in-flight transactions; omitting completion-time version rotation makes the pre-commit query-fill regression fail. All 21 CI checks pass on c0c72c75a5c47730759ddac169973826e0c05fd5, published as database 9.0.0.

Breaking release / cutover: drain and stop legacy API/worker/task/migration writers, clear disposable cached data, deploy matching cache 6.x/database 9.x libraries everywhere, then resume. Rollback requires the same procedure. See docs/cache-invalidation-state.md. Successful post-commit invalidation is still required; durable replay of lost completions is separate work.

Cloud integration: https://github.com/appwrite-labs/cloud/pull/7131. Incident: https://github.com/appwrite-labs/cloud/issues/7126.

Merged into main as 72d48083daec61f2760a54d31ccbe95707c8911d; all 21 PR checks passed before merge.

Walkthrough

Database can use a separate invalidation cache for query and document cache coordination state. The existing cache remains the default, and query-result storage remains in the data cache.

The optional cache separation has bounded follow-up needs: deleted scopes retain permanent state, and configuring a Mirror does not configure its underlying writers. Address these limitations or explicitly accept them before enabling the separate store.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 80.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 15 functions across 5 files.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names a real and central change: document and query-cache invalidation state (epochs, generations, writer registrations) moves from the data cache to a separate invalidation cache. The title also describes the use of CAS versions as epochs and the removal of the counter protocol. The raw summary and PR objectives do not mention CAS versions or a counter protocol removal, so that part of the title is not supported by the provided context. The title is also a conventional commit with a breaking-change marker, and it is 72 characters long. Overall the title is partially related to the changeset: it refers to real aspects of the change, but it misses the main point, which is separating invalidation state from the evicting data cache.

Resolution

Confirm that the change removes the counter protocol and uses CAS versions as epochs, since the summaries do not describe this. If it does, keep the title. If the main change is the separation of invalidation state from the evicting data cache, consider a title such as "feat(cache): store invalidation state in a separate cache". Check that the breaking-change marker (!) is intended.

Cloud integration is prepared in https://github.com/appwrite-labs/cloud/pull/7131 (draft). It is validated against this commit and documents the required non-evicting service and coordinated cutover. Production behavior is unchanged until that integration is released and configured.

Add a read-count or cache-state check to the writer-barrier test.

testDataCacheFlushDuringTransactionKeepsTheWriterBarrier asserts only the returned name values. During the paused commit, the reader reads 'original' twice. After the commit, it reads 'updated'. If a change let the in-commit read fill the shared cache, these assertions would still pass. The second in-commit read would hit the cached 'original', and the post-commit purge would remove that entry before the final read. This is a coverage gap for the writer barrier, not a defect that this test demonstrates.

Add an assertion that the in-commit reads reach the database, or that the shared cache holds no entry for the document key while the commit is paused. If the reader's adapter exposes a read counter like the one other tests in this file use, count reads across the paused reads.

Add a split-store test where the last writer activates while the first writer is still registered.

The existing split-store test (tests/unit/Cache/QueryTest.php:40) already uses a separate invalidation store, so the single-cache premise is incorrect. The test has one writer, so it does not exercise overlapping writers.

Owner registrations are read from the invalidation store. If they moved to the data store, a flush of the data store would empty the owner list. Activating the writer that owns the tombstone would then find no live owners, release the barrier, and publish a fresh epoch while the other writer is still in flight. The existing single-writer test would still pass in that case.

Add a test with separate stores that does the following:

  1. Block writer first, then block writer second.
  2. Flush the data store.
  3. Activate second, the writer that owns the current tombstone.
  4. Assert that getEntry() is still null.

Activating first instead does not detect this regression. Activating first returns before publishing in either implementation, so the assertion would pass in both.

Forward setInvalidationCache() from Mirror to its source and destination.

Mirror forwards setCache(), setQueryCache(), setCacheName(), and setCacheWriterTimeout() to source and destination. It does not override setInvalidationCache(), so a store set on a Mirror stays on the wrapper. Writes through the Mirror run on source and destination. Those instances keep epoch, owner, and writer state in the data cache. The setter docblock requires every reader and writer to use the same non-evicting store, so this configuration does not meet that requirement.

Suggested fix
+    #[\Override]
+    public function setInvalidationCache(?Cache $cache): static
+    {
+        $this->source->setInvalidationCache($cache);
+        $this->destination?->setInvalidationCache($cache);
+
+        return parent::setInvalidationCache($cache);
+    }

Add this method after setCacheWriterTimeout() in src/Database/Mirror.php. Passing null resets all three instances to their data-cache fallback.

The separate-store proposal has been replaced: Redis now uses one evictable epoch/owner record plus atomic versioned snapshots, and fill leases cannot reuse generation zero after eviction. The supporting cache change is appwrite/appwrite#15134. Both regression negative controls were observed red. Local validation passes 857 primary cache tests (4,005 assertions), both PHPStan configurations, and the cache 5.2.0 compatibility run (853 existing tests; four versioned-capability cases skip). The compatibility image now explicitly installs its requested stable fixture instead of applying an incompatible temporary Composer constraint over the development pin. No new Dragonfly or state DSN is required.

Additional review found two paths that continued with generation zero after a lease read failed. The document read path now disables fills and deferred definition refills; withCache() returns its callback result without filling. Query results already discard the cache entry on lease failures.

Both regression cases were seen red before the fix: document reads attempted two unfenced fills, and withCache() served its earlier result without invoking the next callback. Both pass after the fix. The 857-test document/query/cache suite passed against Dragonfly v2.0.0; the cache-5.2 compatibility tier also passed (four capability skips). Pint and both PHPStan configurations pass. Latest commit: 8447521. CI is rerunning on it.

No additional Dragonfly or coordination DSN is introduced. Cloud's draft currently fails its intentional server-ce must be dev-main gate until appwrite/appwrite#15134 lands; the guard remains intact.

All three simplifications are implemented with the matching cache PR appwrite/appwrite#15134: the CAS version is the epoch, the legacy counter/sidecar protocol is deleted, and versioned operations respect the circuit breaker. This database revision removes 1,575 net lines relative to the previous PR head.

Validation on 77990f1f1747623ee59ea51379bb8a60fa52a218: all 21 GitHub checks pass, including the complete adapter matrix. Locally, 13,140 unit tests / 199,559 assertions, both PHPStan configurations and Pint pass. Four native Redis/Dragonfly/SQLite tests cover state eviction and in-flight transactions. A negative control omitting completion-time version rotation fails by serving the pre-commit query result; the real implementation passes.

The temporary cache development pin is for integration. Publish the new cache major and matching database major, replace the pins, then use the documented drain/stop/clear/deploy/resume cutover; do not mix writer protocols. No separate Dragonfly is needed. Lost post-commit invalidations still require a separate durable replay solution.

Preparing stable dependencies in response to the request to remove development versions:

  • Database: utopia-php/cache: ^6.0.
  • Appwrite: utopia-php/database: ^9.0.

Those stable releases do not exist yet; the latest tags are cache 5.2.0 and database 8.3.15. The constraints are prepared locally. Existing PR revisions/lockfiles remain unchanged until publication, so they still represent the tested dependency set rather than fabricated stable versions.

Release order: publish cache 6.0.0 from the CI-green cache implementation; update the database constraint/lock to stable cache 6, rerun CI and publish database 9.0.0; update Appwrite's constraint/lock to stable database 9 and rerun CI. Then update Cloud through its existing upstream-main policy. Release notes and the drain/clear cutover are prepared. Awaiting approval to publish the two breaking major releases.

The zero-downtime rolling bridge is tracked in #1050; this PR and database 9.0.0 are already merged/released and remain immutable. Cloud rollout uses three rolling passes on the same Dragonfly, with explicit fleet/in-flight-write barriers.
