✨ Gate ownerless ClusterObjectSet adoption on object-controller label - #3099
A ClusterObjectDeployment adopts ClusterObjectSet revisions in its group (spec.group == cod.Name). Previously any ownerless group member was adopted unconditionally, even if the object-controller did not create it and it merely shared the deployment's group.
This mirrors the operator-controller's ClusterExtension → ClusterObjectDeployment adoption guard, but for the object-controller's ClusterObjectDeployment → ClusterObjectSet relationship.
Changes
Add apps.kubernetes.io/managed-by label key and object-controller value constants (internal/shared/labels).
buildClusterObjectSet stamps apps.kubernetes.io/managed-by: object-controller on every created revision (set last so it cannot be overridden by template labels).
adoptOrphans adopts only ownerless group members (no controller owner), and only when they carry that label. A revision that still has a controller owner reference is never adopted:
A foreign owner is reported as Progressing=False/OwnerConflict (unchanged).
A stale same-name reference to an older UID of this deployment (e.g. a restored revision) is left to garbage collection rather than rewriting the reference to race it. GC deletes a revision whose owner UID no longer exists, and the controller watches every group member, so it re-reconciles and rolls the deployment forward once GC removes it. Because this is transient and self-healing, the controller only holds off creating a competing revision while the stale revision leads the group, and does not report it as a distinct condition (it leaves the Progressing condition untouched rather than flapping it).
When an ownerless, unlabeled revision leads the group, the deployment reports Progressing=False with a new UnmanagedRevision reason and creates no higher revision — mirroring the existing foreign-owner (OwnerConflict) handling. It recovers once the revision is labeled and adopted.
Why not adopt the older-UID (restored) revision? Rewriting its controller reference to the current UID would be a race against garbage collection, which is already poised to delete it. Letting GC remove it and rolling forward from the template is deterministic and avoids two revisions fighting over the same objects during the window.
Doc-only clarification to the operator-controller's checkAdoptable (internal/operator-controller/applier/boxcutter.go, the ClusterExtension → ClusterObjectDeployment side): the comment now accurately describes that a stale same-name/different-UID reference is not re-adopted there and is instead handled by garbage collection + recreation. No behavior change.
No caching changes are needed: the object-controller already caches all ClusterObjectSets/ClusterObjectDeployments and watches every group member via the spec.group map func.
e2e harness robustness (test/e2e/steps/steps.go): anchor the consistently helper's window to the first successful read. The new UnmanagedRevision scenario uses consistently(...for "5s"). The helper previously measured its window from the step start and required at least one successful read within it, tolerating transient read failures only within maxTransientGap (10s). Because maxTransientGap is longer than a short window, a transient apiserver read outage spanning the whole 5s window — seen in CI as a clusterobjectdeployments watch-cacher reinitialization on a loaded two-node cluster — failed the step with consistency check never observed the expected state during the window, even though the reported condition never deviated (the leftover COD in the support bundle showed the expected Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision). The window is now measured from the first successful observation and the helper polls for duration+maxTransientGap, so a read outage at the start of a short window postpones the window instead of failing it. Existing guarantees are preserved: a hard deviation still fails immediately, a never-readable resource still fails, and reads unavailable longer than maxTransientGap still fail. (A broader kubectl-layer transient-retry that hardens all read/poll steps is intentionally deferred to a follow-up PR.)
Testing
Unit tests cover: ownerless + labeled → adopt; ownerless + missing label → not adopted + Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision; older-UID (labeled or not) → not adopted, no Progressing condition set, no competing revision created, and roll-forward once the stale revision is garbage-collected; non-leading unmanaged orphan ignored; recovery once labeled; existing owned (current-UID) and foreign-controller behavior unchanged.
E2E scenarios added to cod_progressing_reasons.feature: deployment-created revisions carry the managed-by label; an ownerless/unlabeled group member surfaces UnmanagedRevision and recovers once labeled.
Reviewer Notes
The new Progressing reason ClusterObjectDeploymentReasonUnmanagedRevision is a plain Go constant (experimental COD API) and needs no deepcopy regeneration. The regenerated CRD YAML, applyconfigurations, docs/api-reference/olmv1-api-reference.md, and manifests/*.yaml in this PR come from the ClusterObjectDeploymentStatus godoc update (documenting the new reason and the label-gated adoption), not from any schema/struct-field change.
The older-UID (restored revision) case is deliberately not adopted and is left to garbage collection — see the note above. It is not surfaced as a condition because it is transient and self-healing via the group-member watch.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Deployment-created revisions now include a managed-by label.
Deployment progress reports UnmanagedRevision when the leading active revision lacks that label.
Bug Fixes
Leading unmanaged revisions are left untouched and block higher revisions until removed or relabeled; lower unmanaged revisions do not block progress.
Only revisions with the managed-by label are eligible for adoption, including ownerless revisions and revisions referencing an older deployment UID. Foreign-owned revisions remain excluded.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The object-controller labels revisions it creates. Reconciliation uses that label to identify eligible revisions for adoption. An unmanaged leading revision sets Progressing=False with reason UnmanagedRevision and blocks creation of a higher revision.

Defines the managed-by label and applies it to new revisions after template labels are copied. Tests check the label on generated revisions and fixtures.
Adoption skips unlabeled revisions that are not controlled by the current deployment. An unmanaged leading revision sets Progressing=False with reason UnmanagedRevision and blocks higher revision creation. Tests cover label-based recovery and confirm that a lower unmanaged revision does not block reconciliation. API and CRD descriptions document adoption rules and recovery.
Existing revisions can block deployment recovery until manually labeled. Resolve legacy recovery before merging; the reserved-label documentation also needs updating.

Explanation
The title uses the ✨ icon, which matches the template's minor/compatible change prefix. It names the main change: adoption of ownerless ClusterObjectSet revisions is gated on the object-controller managed-by label. The changeset adds the label constants, stamps the label on created revisions, limits adoption of ownerless revisions to labeled ones, and adds the UnmanagedRevision reason. The title is specific and matches the changes described in the summary and objectives.

Cover managed-by label precedence in the revision-builder test.
The propagation test should supply a conflicting labels.ManagedByKey value and assert that labels.ManagedByObjectController remains on the created revision.

[P2] Align older-UID adoption with the acceptance criterion
OPRUN-4831 requires the managed-by label for both ownerless group members and members referencing an older UID of this deployment. Since isUnmanagedOrphan only gates revisions with no controller reference, the older-UID path still adopts an unlabeled revision; the new restore test explicitly expects this. The restore exemption appears intentional, but conflicts with that requirement. Please apply the label gate to older-UID adoption too, or explicitly align the acceptance criterion with the restore exemption.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Aligned with the AC (option: apply the label gate to the older-UID path too). adoptOrphans now adopts a non-deleting group member only when it is already controlled by this deployment UID or carries the apps.kubernetes.io/managed-by=object-controller label — this covers both ownerless revisions and revisions referencing an older UID of this deployment. isUnmanagedOrphan was generalized to isUnmanagedRevision(cod, cos) accordingly, and a leading unlabeled older-UID revision now surfaces Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision just like the ownerless case. Genuine restores are unaffected because object-controller-created revisions always carry the label. Unit tests updated: same deployment with an older UID without managed-by label now expects wantAdopted: false, plus an added older API version without managed-by label case. (529f9aa)

[P2] Assert no higher revision exists before recovery
The scenario checks Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision and then immediately labels the orphan. OPRUN-4831 also calls for e2e coverage proving that no higher revision is created while blocked. Please assert that ${NAME}-2 does not exist, or that the group still contains only one revision, before applying the recovery label. The final assertion that the deployment owns two revisions after recovery cannot establish that invariant. The unit coverage is useful, but this requested e2e assertion is still missing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added a pre-recovery assertion proving no higher revision is created while blocked: the scenario now checks Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision holds consistently for 5s and that clusterobjectset/${NAME}-2 does not exist, before applying the recovery label. (529f9aa)

[P3] Document the adoption gate and UnmanagedRevision condition
The public ClusterObjectDeploymentStatus.Conditions comment below still says that revisions without a controller owner are adopted before status is calculated, without mentioning the new label requirement. Its Progressing reason documentation also omits UnmanagedRevision. Please update those API comments to describe the adoption condition, blocked behavior, and recovery, and regenerate the CRD/reference documentation as appropriate so users can discover the new behavior.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Updated the ClusterObjectDeploymentStatus.Conditions doc comment: the Progressing paragraph now documents the UnmanagedRevision reason (blocked behavior + recovery), and the Available paragraph now describes the adoption gate — a revision is only adopted when it is already controlled by this deployment or carries the apps.kubernetes.io/managed-by=object-controller label. Regenerated the CRD, manifests, and API reference docs. (529f9aa)

A ClusterObjectDeployment adopts ClusterObjectSet revisions in its group
(spec.group == cod.Name). Previously any ownerless group member was adopted
unconditionally, even if the object-controller did not create it and it merely
shared the deployment's group.
The object-controller now stamps apps.kubernetes.io/managed-by=object-controller
on every revision it creates, and only adopts an ownerless group member that
carries that label.
A revision that still carries a controller owner reference is never adopted:
- A foreign owner is reported as Progressing=False/OwnerConflict (unchanged).
- A stale same-name reference to an older UID of this deployment (e.g. a restored
revision) is left to garbage collection rather than rewriting the reference to
race it. GC deletes a revision whose owner UID no longer exists; the controller
watches every group member, so it re-reconciles and rolls the deployment
forward once GC removes it. Because this is transient and self-healing, the
controller only holds off creating a competing revision while the stale
revision leads the group and does not report it as a distinct condition.
When an ownerless, unlabeled revision leads the group, the deployment reports
Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision and creates no higher revision, mirroring
the existing foreign-owner (OwnerConflict) handling. It recovers once the
revision is labeled and adopted.
e2e: anchor the consistently helper's window to the first successful read.
The new UnmanagedRevision scenario uses consistently(...for "5s") to prove the
deployment keeps reporting Progressing=False/UnmanagedRevision. The helper
previously measured its window from the step start and required at least one
successful read within that window, tolerating transient read failures only
within maxTransientGap (10s). Because maxTransientGap is longer than a short
window, a transient apiserver read outage spanning the whole 5s window (observed
in CI as a clusterobjectdeployments watch-cacher reinitialization on a loaded
two-node cluster) failed the step with "consistency check never observed the
expected state during the window" even though the reported condition never
deviated.
The window is now measured from the first successful observation rather than the
step start, and the helper polls for duration+maxTransientGap, so a read outage
at the start of a short window postpones the window instead of failing it. The
existing guarantees are preserved: a hard deviation still fails immediately, a
resource that is never readable still fails, and reads that stay unavailable for
longer than maxTransientGap still fail.

The new Progressing reason
ClusterObjectDeploymentReasonUnmanagedRevisionis a plain Go constant (experimental COD API) and needs no deepcopy regeneration. The regenerated CRD YAML, applyconfigurations,docs/api-reference/olmv1-api-reference.md, andmanifests/*.yamlin this PR come from theClusterObjectDeploymentStatusgodoc update (documenting the new reason and the label-gated adoption), not from any schema/struct-field change. The older-UID (restored revision) case is deliberately not adopted and is left to garbage collection — see the note above. It is not surfaced as a condition because it is transient and self-healing via the group-member watch.
