Summary

Implements DERA — Phase 5.3: SQLite Connector, providing a production-grade, asynchronous, read-only metadata introspection adapter (SqliteConnector) conforming to the Phase 5.1 DatabaseConnector protocol.

The connector introduces multi-layer read-only defenses (mode=ro, PRAGMA query_only = ON;, busy_timeout), strict filesystem isolation (approved storage roots, path normalization, traversal guards, prohibited system paths), deep catalog introspection (sqlite_schema + PRAGMAs), official SQLite 3 Type Affinity (Rules 1–5), STRICT and WITHOUT ROWID table recognition, generated column discovery, deterministic output ordering, cooperative cancellation, and RFC 9457-compatible error taxonomy with path redaction.

Implementation Details

  • Filesystem Security (filesystem.py): Enforces approved storage root boundaries, canonicalizes paths via os.path.realpath, rejects traversal (..), null bytes, unauthorized symlinks, and prohibited system/config paths (/etc, /proc, C:\Windows, .env).
  • Read-Only Connection Engine (connection.py): Offloads synchronous SQLite C runtime calls via asyncio.to_thread. Enforces URI file:/path?mode=ro, executes PRAGMA query_only = ON; and PRAGMA busy_timeout = 5000;. Halts running queries on timeout/cancellation via sqlite3.Connection.interrupt().
  • Deep Metadata Introspection (catalog.py & queries.py):
    • Schemas: PRAGMA database_list
    • Tables: sqlite_schema with AST option parser for STRICT and WITHOUT ROWID
    • Columns: PRAGMA table_xinfo with table_info fallback, mapping hidden flags 2/3 to stored/virtual generated columns
    • Keys & Constraints: Composite primary keys, foreign keys via PRAGMA foreign_key_list, unique constraints via PRAGMA index_list (origin='u'), and deterministic DDL check constraint extraction
    • Indexes: Secondary, partial (WHERE predicate), and expression indexes via PRAGMA index_xinfo
    • Views & Triggers: Discovered from sqlite_schema as untrusted metadata without execution
  • Type Affinity Engine (types.py): Implements official SQLite 3 specification Section 3.1 rules 1 through 5 (INTEGER, TEXT, BLOB, REAL, NUMERIC) while preserving native declared types in ColumnInfo.data_type.
  • Error Taxonomy & Redaction (errors.py): Maps SQLite exceptions to Phase 5.1 domain errors (ConnectorSecurityViolationError, ConnectorUnavailableError, ConnectorTimeoutError) and redacts filesystem paths as [REDACTED_PATH].
  • Connector Adapter & Registry (adapter.py, registry.py): Implements DatabaseConnector protocol with ConnectionLifecycle state tracking, registered under DatabaseEngine.SQLITE.
  • Accessibility Policy: Added authoritative ACCESSIBILITY.md at repository root defining DERA's WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility commitment and contributor expectations.

Possibly related PRs

  • krishanth7/dera#44: Implements the PostgreSQL adapter for the same connector protocol and registers it alongside this SQLite adapter.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 4e48d

The SQLite connector registered by default does not require an approved storage root. A registry-created connector can therefore read metadata from any readable SQLite file outside the blocked system paths. The security and configuration docs also describe protections that do not exist. Require approved roots and correct the docs before merging.

Security architecture risk: High · up to 4e48d

Workspace isolation is not enforced by default for the newly available SQLite connector. Read-only access limits writes but does not prevent inspection of another accessible database, and path checks can become stale before opening. Actual production reachability and filesystem permissions remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The newly registered factory path does not require workspace-approved storage roots. Generic configuration conversion supplies only database, timeouts, and driver_options, leaving roots empty; path validation then skips containment. Workspace identity is not used to authorize the file. A caller able to select the database path can therefore request metadata from other process-readable SQLite databases, subject to the remaining path checks. Direct typed construction with explicit roots is protective but does not secure the default generic path.
  • Medium · security · observed: Approved-root validation returns a canonical pathname that is opened in a later worker operation without binding or verifying file identity. An actor with permission to replace that canonical directory entry or an ancestor can redirect the open after validation, including outside configured roots. Resolving static symlinks and reusing the same canonical string are useful countercontrols but do not close this race. Deployment-specific mutation authority remains unconfirmed.
  • Medium · reliability · observed: The new asynchronous lifecycle does not coordinate worker lifetime with cancellation and teardown. Cancellation is checked before connection setup, but task cancellation during opening or querying is not handled by the Exception branches and does not interrupt or drain the worker. Query execution also runs outside the connect/close lock. Consequently, cancelled requests can leave work continuing beyond their request lifetime, and close can overlap query workers, weakening shared-process resource containment. Production exhaustion or persistent leakage has not been demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For a caller that controls the database path through the new factory, absent approved roots can expand inspection beyond one workspace to other process-readable SQLite databases passing the remaining checks. The evidenced output includes schema names and stored SQL definitions, not arbitrary file contents or application rows. Cross-tenant exposure depends on filesystem layout and application routing that were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained containment finding is supported by the newly registered path: generic database configuration becomes a SQLite configuration with empty roots, containment is skipped, and metadata methods inspect the selected readable database. Supplying typed configuration with explicit roots prevents static escapes on that construction path.
  • observed — The retained validation-to-open race is supported by separate pathname validation and opening operations. Exploitation requires authority to replace the resolved path or an ancestor during that interval; merely retargeting an original symlink whose resolved destination remains unchanged is insufficient.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new adapter uses an escaped file URI with mode=ro and applies query_only before publishing the connection. Catalog filters use bound parameters, PRAGMA identifiers are quoted, and view and trigger definitions are returned as metadata rather than executed. These are meaningful controls but do not authorize the selected file.
  • observed — The rejected test-result disclosure candidate is not retained as a finding: ConnectionTestResult defines no details field, so the adapter's extra details argument does not establish that canonical_path is returned through that model. This counterevidence is specific to that result field and does not prove universal path redaction.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Continuing worker operations after request cancellation can retain connection or thread resources outside the caller's lifetime. Repetition could affect other workloads sharing the process. Normal timeout interruption and cursor cleanup reduce this risk, but do not establish bounded cancellation cleanup or safe query/close coordination.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require a trusted, workspace-bound filesystem policy on every production construction path and fail closed when it is absent. Preserve that policy through the shared factory. Establish a platform-appropriate file-identity strategy, including protection against replacement of path ancestors and explicit assumptions about directory ownership.
  • proposed — Give opening and query workers explicit resource ownership. On cancellation or timeout, interrupt and drain active work before releasing ownership; coordinate close with query lifetime and explicitly close connections whose setup fails before publication.

The documented configuration does not match SqliteConnectorConfig.

SqliteConnectorConfig has no read_only or max_file_size_bytes field. It has provider and max_objects_limit, which the table omits. Pydantic ignores unknown keyword arguments by default. The example's read_only=True therefore does nothing, and a reader may assume a 10 GB file-size limit that is not enforced.

TimeoutSettings exposes connect_timeout_seconds, query_timeout_seconds and total_deadline_seconds in safe_dict. Confirm that metadata_timeout_seconds exists. Also, sqlite3.BusyError does not exist. A busy timeout surfaces as sqlite3.OperationalError.

Update the table and example to match the model.

The document describes defenses that validate_sqlite_path does not implement.

The code blocks only /dev/, /proc/ and /sys/ prefixes and the reserved Windows device names. It does not reject these paths:

  • /etc, /root, /var/run, /boot
  • C:\Windows, C:\Program Files, C:\ProgramData
  • the hidden directories .env, .git, .ssh, .aws, .config

The code does not check file size, so the "multi-terabyte files" threat has no mitigation. The URI builder takes no caller-supplied query parameters, so "rejected" in line 36 is inaccurate. The builder simply cannot accept them.

Security documentation that overstates the controls misleads operators. Either implement these checks or remove the claims. The same applies to SECURITY.md, Layer 5.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Anonymous CHECK constraints get a wrong name when any earlier CONSTRAINT keyword exists.

The code tests whether "CONSTRAINT" appears anywhere in the text before CHECK. It then takes the last word after the last CONSTRAINT. Example DDL:

CREATE TABLE t (id INT, CONSTRAINT pk PRIMARY KEY(id), x INT CHECK (x > 0))

The result is constraint_name="INT", not chk_t_1. Any table with a named PK, FK or UNIQUE constraint followed by an inline CHECK gets a garbage name.

Treat the CHECK as named only when CONSTRAINT <name> directly precedes it.

Update the CHECK constraint name detection near the table SQL parsing logic so a
constraint is considered named only when a CONSTRAINT keyword and its name
directly precede the CHECK. Do not infer the name from an earlier table

IndexInfo.predicate is set to the literal string "partial index", not the index predicate.

Consumers of IndexInfo.predicate expect a SQL predicate. DERA uses AST SQL parsing elsewhere. A parser or diff tool that reads this field will fail or misreport. COMPATIBILITY.md also says the predicate is extracted from index_xinfo. index_xinfo does not return it.

Extract the WHERE clause from sqlite_schema.sql for the index. Alternatively, set predicate=None and keep the is_partial flag in engine_specific.

Update the IndexInfo.predicate assignment to contain the index’s actual WHERE

Path Traversal

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-367 — Time-of-check Time-of-use (TOCTOU) Race Condition

View Security blast radius

Path validation and file open are separate steps (TOCTOU), so symlink confinement can be bypassed.

validate_sqlite_path resolves and checks the path in a worker thread. sqlite3.connect(uri) then re-resolves the same pathname in a second asyncio.to_thread call. realpath does not bind the later open to the checked file.

An attacker who can write inside an approved root can win the race. The attacker replaces the validated file with a symlink to a file outside the root between the two calls. SQLite follows the symlink, so containment does not hold. The data exposed is catalog metadata, view SQL and trigger SQL of the target file.

Reduce the window with these steps:

  • Record os.stat() st_dev and st_ino during validation.
  • After opening, read the file path from PRAGMA database_list.
  • Re-check that path for root containment and identity.
  • Close the connection and raise ConnectorSecurityViolationError on mismatch.

Also keep approved roots non-writable by the tenants that the roots isolate. Python's sqlite3 cannot open from a file descriptor, so the race cannot be removed in Python alone.

Based on learnings: validation by pathname followed by a separate open on the same pathname is a TOCTOU race and must be flagged.

execute_query does not serialize queries, and a timeout interrupts every query on the connection.

ARCHITECTURE.md says an asyncio.Lock serializes query execution. self._lock guards only connect() and close().

Concurrent callers (for example asyncio.gather over adapter methods) run _run_query in parallel threads on one sqlite3.Connection. When one query times out, self._conn.interrupt() aborts all in-flight statements on that connection. The other callers then fail with ConnectorMetadataError for an unrelated cause.

Add a dedicated query lock. Do not reuse self._lock, because connect() takes it.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Query timeouts are mapped to ConnectorCancelledError instead of ConnectorTimeoutError.

SqliteConnectionManager.execute_query raises TimeoutError when asyncio.wait_for expires. This branch converts that error to ConnectorCancelledError. The error taxonomy already has ConnectorTimeoutError, and the lock and busy-timeout case on line 110 uses it. Callers that retry or report timeouts differently from user cancellations will misclassify these failures.

Map TimeoutError to ConnectorTimeoutError. Keep ConnectorCancelledError for asyncio.CancelledError.

Require an approved storage root for every file-backed SQLite connector.

approved_storage_roots defaults to an empty list, and validate_sqlite_path skips containment when the list is empty. The registry passes a generic ConnectorConfig; the adapter converts it without preserving filesystem restrictions. A caller can therefore select any readable regular SQLite file outside the prohibited device paths and expose its metadata.

Reject empty roots in both path validation and SqliteConnectorConfig. Reject generic configurations in the adapter instead of silently converting them.
