fix(engine): a callable Proxy as toPrimitive, valueOf, a typed-array callback or a decorator no longer crashes, and deep Proxy/bound-function chains throw RangeError - #1663
Conversation
…ay callbacks and decorators, and deep Proxy/bound/class-extends chains throw RangeError instead of crashing A callable Proxy (or a class) used where a built-in calls a user callable was cast to TGocciaFunctionBase: ToPrimitive's @@toPrimitive, valueOf and toString, typed-array callbacks, decorators and their initializers, addInitializer, accessors on class instances and arrays, private accessors replaced by a decorator, Symbol.dispose in bytecode, and the test262 host's broadcast callback. Each now goes through the generic [[Call]] dispatch. Chains of bound functions now collapse in a loop for [[Call]] and [[Construct]]. A Proxy's [[Call]]/[[Construct]] forward to a bound function, its [[Construct]] forward to a class, and instanceof through a bound function count against MAX_PROPERTY_DELEGATION_DEPTH, and nested delegations check the native stack reserve, so alternating Proxy/bound chains and classes extending Proxies end in a catchable RangeError in production builds.
… functions in a loop, and depth probes keep bound-chain names short The tree-walk interpreter's two construct paths for a bound function now use CollapseBoundFunctionChain, as the VM's do, so new on 30,000 bound functions completes instead of overflowing the native stack. The depth-probe chains of bound functions hide the target's name, so a deep chain no longer builds names quadratic in its depth and reaches the memory cap before the depth.

…nd test hooks accept a callable Proxy DispatchCall now roots a callable Proxy for the whole of its [[Call]]. OP_USING_DISPOSE clears the dispose method's register before calling it, so a Proxy a [Symbol.dispose] getter returned was held only in a Pascal local; an apply-trap getter that collected freed it, and ApplyTrap then read the freed Proxy's target. The GC-stress build faulted on it (exit 70) in bytecode mode. beforeAll, beforeEach, afterEach, afterAll and onTestFinished accept any callable instead of only function objects. RunCallbacks already dispatches a callable Proxy, but registration rejected one with a TypeError first.

…e apply-trap lookup runs guest code DispatchCall rooted the Proxy across its [[Call]] but not the receiver, which the apply trap's root-bearing arguments only take after GetTrap has run a handler accessor. Root the receiver with the callee. The new test drives a churning apply getter through Symbol.toPrimitive and valueOf on fresh objects; current callers keep the receiver reachable, so it passes before and after, and covers the path.

…-interpreter Brings in main through #1675. Goccia.Evaluator.pas stays deleted: #1663's changes there (callable Proxies and bound-function construct chains in the tree-walk evaluator) are interpreter-only. Goccia.VM.pas keeps #1677's implicit-super forwarding loop without the evaluator's ConstructorMethod branch and without #1663's evaluator-class construct path, keeping its bound-function chain collapse. Goccia.Values.ClassValue.pas keeps #1663's TGocciaValue private accessors without the interpreter-only private method and instance-property members. Goccia.StackLimit.pas keeps both comments.
…dr-context Brings in main through #1675. docs/bytecode-vm.md takes the engine-based text with #1653's and #1654's entry-module behavior. docs/embedding.md keeps #1663's native stack and delegation description without its sentence on what the interpreter does not count. The GC-stress section of docs/contributing/tooling.md (#1638) no longer contrasts the VM with the interpreter.
…ate getter and setter main's widened private getter and setter tables (#1663) take any callable, so the merge no longer skips a static replacement that is not a function object.
…ts the element and its replacement takes effect (#1650) * fix(decorators): a decorator on a private method, getter or setter gets the element and its replacement takes effect in bytecode mode ApplyElementDecorator read a private instance method from the by-name table on TGocciaClassValue that only the tree-walk evaluator filled, so a compiled class passed undefined to the decorator, and it stored the replacement only when it was the evaluator's TGocciaMethodValue. Private getters and setters (instance and static) had the same gap. A compiled class keeps its private instance methods and accessors on the prototype under their compiled '#slot:' key and its static accessors under the runtime key, so read and replace them there. context.access for a private method now has get and has. Both check the class's brand and throw a TypeError for a non-object; get returns the class's current method, so it sees a decorator's replacement. The initializers method decorators add now run before the compiled field initializer instead of after it, so they run on each instance before its fields are defined. Closes #1648 * test(decorators): a callable Proxy replaces a static or instance private getter and setter main's widened private getter and setter tables (#1663) take any callable, so the merge no longer skips a static replacement that is not a function object.
…g when called after its decorator returned, and for a non-callable argument (#1671) * fix(decorators): a decorator on a private method, getter or setter gets the element and its replacement takes effect in bytecode mode ApplyElementDecorator read a private instance method from the by-name table on TGocciaClassValue that only the tree-walk evaluator filled, so a compiled class passed undefined to the decorator, and it stored the replacement only when it was the evaluator's TGocciaMethodValue. The initializers method decorators add now run before the compiled field initializer instead of after it, so they run on each instance before its fields are defined. Closes #1648 * fix(decorators): addInitializer called after its decorator returned throws a TypeError instead of crashing the engine Each decorator context got an addInitializer bound to an initializer collector the decorator session owned and freed when decoration finished, so a decorator that kept its context could call into freed memory afterwards. The collectors are now managed by the garbage collector, and each context gets its own addInitializer function that keeps its collector alive and holds that decorator's decorationState: once the decorator returns, a call throws a TypeError (decorators proposal, CreateAddInitializerFunction step 1). addInitializer now throws a TypeError for a non-callable argument instead of ignoring it (step 2), and an initializer that is a callable Proxy is called through Call rather than cast to a function. Closes #1667 Closes #1668 * fix(decorators): a callable Proxy or class passed to addInitializer is called through Call Wrap a callable initializer that is not a function object when addInitializer accepts it, so the class's initializer lists keep holding function objects and the per-instance initializer loop pays nothing extra. A class passed as an initializer now throws a TypeError when it runs instead of being cast to a function. * docs(decorators): addInitializer throws a TypeError after its decorator returns or for a non-callable argument * refactor(decorators): the callable-initializer wrapper keeps its target only as its captured root * test(decorators): a callable Proxy replaces a static or instance private getter and setter main's widened private getter and setter tables (#1663) take any callable, so the merge no longer skips a static replacement that is not a function object.
Summary
Two crash classes around callable Proxies and bound functions.
#1462: a callable Proxy where a built-in calls a user callable. Several call sites checked
IsCallable, which a Proxy whose target is a function passes, and then hard-cast the value toTGocciaFunctionBase. The production build stopped withFatal error: Access violation, and the development build withInvalid type cast. A class asvalueOforSymbol.toPrimitivehit the same casts. Every such site now dispatches through the generic[[Call]](DispatchCall/InvokeCallable, which route a callable Proxy through itsapplytrap). Function objects keep the direct call.#1497: deep chains in production builds. Chains that alternate Proxies with bound functions, and classes that each extend a Proxy of the previous class, ran native recursion with no bound, and the production build ran into the guard page (exit 139). They now end in a catchable
RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded, as Node.js does for the class chain, and the engine keeps working afterwards:[[Call]]and[[Construct]](CollapseBoundFunctionChain). This applies inTGocciaBoundFunctionValue.Calland its fast paths, in the VM'sConstructValueandInvokeConstructableWithReceiver, and in the interpreter's two construct paths. So a pure bound chain completes at any depth: 20,000 levels construct, wherenewcrashed at 15,000 in bytecode before.[[Call]]forward to a bound function, its[[Construct]]forward to a bound function or a class, andinstanceofthrough a bound function (each step reads the next target's@@hasInstance, so it cannot be collapsed) now count againstMAX_PROPERTY_DELEGATION_DEPTH, like a forward to a Proxy target already does (fix(runtime): throw RangeError instead of crashing when deeply nested Proxies forward any internal method #1432).EnterPropertyDelegationandEnterObjectDelegationalso check the native stack reserve (NATIVE_STACK_RESERVE, as fix(vm): count constructor, async, generator and accessor calls against --max-stack in bytecode, and stop them before the native stack runs out #1482 does for VM re-entries) once more thanNATIVE_REENTRY_UNCHECKED_DEPTH(8) delegations nest. The count alone did not hold when native re-entries already filled most of the stack, or when a level was expensive, such as a trap wrapped in bound functions. Programs whose delegations do not nest never look the stack bounds up.IsConstructableandGetFunctionRealmstep through bound functions and Proxies in a loop instead of recursing.typeofandIsCallablestill stop at the first bound function, so calls through a chain stay O(1) per level.Closes #1462

These pre-existing problems turned up while testing. Each reproduces on
main, and none is a crash fixed or caused here:let C = class {}; for (const _ of [1]) C = class extends C {};inside a function, followed bynew C()from a nested arrow, throwsC is not a constructor.InvokeImplicitSuperInitializationRegisters. The depth-probeclass-extends-chainrow shows it onmaintoo.docs/embedding.md, and the interpreter is being removed (Remove the tree-walk interpreter #825).
