fix(l1): bound the writer's L1 copy by the PUT response's Fresh-For (LAB-12090) - #224
A store that clamps a write to a plan maximum TTL reports the bound it applied as X-CacheKit-Fresh-For on the PUT 2xx (protocol spec/saas-api.md, API-100). Until now the client kept its write-through L1 copy for the full TTL it sent, so it could serve the value locally after the store had expired it. This PR makes the writer's copy follow API-103.
CachekitIO reads X-CacheKit-Fresh-For from the PUT 2xx with the existing GET grammar (parse_fresh_for: 1-7 ASCII digits, at most 2,592,000, length check first; a repeated header counts as 0).
The client bounds the L1 copy to min(ttl, wire ttl, fresh_for), measured from receipt of the 2xx.
Header absent: no change from today.
Malformed or 0: no L1 copy, and the key's older L1 copy is dropped so it cannot outlive the write.
Redis, Memcached, File and Workers report no bound; their behaviour is unchanged.
API-104: refresh_ttl() (PATCH /ttl) lives on the backend and never touches the client's L1, so its response cannot create or extend a local bound. A new test pins this.
Seam
The new Backend::set_bytes_with_freshness is #[doc(hidden)] and has a default, like get_with_freshness, so downstream Backend implementors keep compiling. The default reports no bound. A capability flag, __reports_write_bound (default false), is read once when the client is built. Writes call the new method only when the client has an L1 and the backend sets the flag. Otherwise they call set_bytes as before.
The flag exists for a measured reason. Routing every write through the defaulted method added about 260 instructions to each set (two more boxed futures) and failed the 0.5% instruction-count gate. With the flag and an inlined call, the full bench_hot_path instr A/B against main puts all 118 cases within noise; set/plain 40 B went from 4835 to 4851 instructions (+0.33%). ReliableBackend forwards both methods.
A user-written decorator that wraps CachekitIO and forwards neither method falls back to today's behaviour (no bound). This matches how get_with_freshness already works.
Out of scope
There is still no client-side rejection of a TTL above 7,776,000. That gap is tracked separately.
Tests
put_reports_the_stores_fresh_for: on a loopback HTTP stub, the header is absent, 1, 0, and malformed (+5).
writer_l1_copy::*, driven through the client (no reliability stack):
with no header the copy keeps the write TTL;
Fresh-For: 1 against a 300 s TTL stops L1 service after 1 s;
a malformed header keeps no copy;
0 drops the older copy;
refresh_ttl with 300 s does not extend a copy bounded to 1 s.
through_the_reliability_stack::a_smaller_fresh_for_bounds_the_copy_through_the_stack: the same 1 s bound with ReliableBackend in front of CachekitIO. It fails if ReliableBackend stops forwarding set_bytes_with_freshness.
Setting the flag to false turns 5 of these 6 tests red. The no-header test is the control.
Docs
README L1 table, "Write-through" row: the PUTFresh-For bound, and that refresh_ttl never lengthens an L1 copy.
README SWR notes: the bound applies to writes too.
set_with_ttl rustdoc: the L1 copy bound.
parse_fresh_for rustdoc: 2,592,000 is the header's own cap, below the 90-day TTL range, not "the 30-day TTL cap".

A store that clamps a write to a plan maximum TTL reports the bound it
applied as X-CacheKit-Fresh-For on the PUT 2xx (API-100). The client kept
its write-through copy for the full TTL it sent, so it could serve the
value locally after the store had expired it (API-103).
CachekitIO now reads the header with the GET grammar and the client
bounds the copy to min(ttl, wire ttl, fresh_for) from receipt. A missing
header keeps today's behaviour; a malformed value or 0 keeps no copy and
drops the key's older one. Other backends report no bound.
The seam is a defaulted, hidden Backend::set_bytes_with_freshness plus a
capability flag read once at build, so downstream backends keep compiling
and writes on backends without the signal pay no extra call.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Local cache copies now respect freshness limits returned by the remote cache, as well as configured write TTLs.
Invalid or zero freshness limits no longer leave a local copy in place, and refreshing a TTL does not extend that copy beyond its original freshness limit.
These freshness limits are applied to regular writes and stale-while-revalidate updates, including when writes pass through reliability safeguards.
Documentation
Clarified how write order, freshness limits and stale-while-revalidate behaviour affect local cache copies.
Walkthrough
Writes can now return a backend freshness bound. CacheKit uses that bound, together with the requested and wire TTLs, to limit write-through L1 entries. Plain, encrypted and SWR writes use this path.

Summary
Backend write-bound support crates/cachekit/src/backend/mod.rs, crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs, crates/cachekit/src/reliability.rs
The backend interface adds freshness-aware writes and a capability method. CachekitIO returns the parsed PUT response bound, and ReliableBackend forwards the methods. Tests cover absent, valid, zero and malformed bounds.
Apply bounds to L1 write-through crates/cachekit/src/client.rs, README.md, crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs
CacheKit applies the returned bound to plain, encrypted and SWR write-through entries. A zero bound removes an existing L1 entry. Tests and documentation cover TTL limits and refresh behaviour.

…liability stack
The writer_l1_copy helper builds a client without a reliability stack, so
its doc comment was wrong and no test exercised ReliableBackend's
forwarding of the write bound. Correct the comment and add a test that
writes through the stack and checks the L1 copy expires at Fresh-For.
CodeRabbit-Resolved: cachekitio.rs:1556:Correct the helper documen
Resolved crates/cachekit/src/client.rs as a union (kept this PR's l1_write_bound and main's latency in CacheKitBuilder::build; git show --remerge-diff cf367e7 shows only the markers removed); auto-rebased onto main; CI will re-run.

What
A store that clamps a write to a plan maximum TTL reports the bound it applied as
X-CacheKit-Fresh-Foron thePUT2xx (protocolspec/saas-api.md, API-100). Until now the client kept its write-through L1 copy for the full TTL it sent, so it could serve the value locally after the store had expired it. This PR makes the writer's copy follow API-103.CachekitIOreadsX-CacheKit-Fresh-Forfrom thePUT2xx with the existingGETgrammar (parse_fresh_for: 1-7 ASCII digits, at most 2,592,000, length check first; a repeated header counts as0).min(ttl, wire ttl, fresh_for), measured from receipt of the 2xx.0: no L1 copy, and the key's older L1 copy is dropped so it cannot outlive the write.refresh_ttl()(PATCH /ttl) lives on the backend and never touches the client's L1, so its response cannot create or extend a local bound. A new test pins this.Seam
The new
Backend::set_bytes_with_freshnessis#[doc(hidden)]and has a default, likeget_with_freshness, so downstreamBackendimplementors keep compiling. The default reports no bound. A capability flag,__reports_write_bound(defaultfalse), is read once when the client is built. Writes call the new method only when the client has an L1 and the backend sets the flag. Otherwise they callset_bytesas before.The flag exists for a measured reason. Routing every write through the defaulted method added about 260 instructions to each
set(two more boxed futures) and failed the 0.5% instruction-count gate. With the flag and an inlined call, the fullbench_hot_path instrA/B againstmainputs all 118 cases within noise;set/plain40 B went from 4835 to 4851 instructions (+0.33%).ReliableBackendforwards both methods.A user-written decorator that wraps
CachekitIOand forwards neither method falls back to today's behaviour (no bound). This matches howget_with_freshnessalready works.Out of scope
There is still no client-side rejection of a TTL above 7,776,000. That gap is tracked separately.
