fix(l1): time the writer's L1 bound from the PUT receipt, not from L1 insertion (LAB-12351) - #226
The writer's own L1 copy now expires at receipt of the PUT2xx plus min(write TTL, Fresh-For), as spec/saas-api.md API-103 requires ("the clock starts when the SDK receives the 2xx"). Before this, the bound started at L1 insertion, so any delay between the response and the insertion, such as a backend wrapper doing work after the inner write, restarted the copy's clock instead of shortening it.
What changed
Backend::set_bytes_with_freshness (both trait variants) returns Option<WriteBound> instead of Option<Duration>. WriteBound carries received: Instant, taken when the 2xx arrives, plus the fresh_for the response reported. The default still returns None, and never reads the clock, so the ?Send trait stays trap-free on wasm32-unknown-unknown.
CachekitIO takes Instant::now() once, on the 2xx.
ReliableBackend forwards the inner bound unchanged, so the bound keeps the receipt of the attempt that succeeded.
CacheKit::l1_set admits the entry with L1Cache::set_shared_from(.., received): its TTL and SWR window run from receipt. With no WriteBound (a backend that reports none), the TTL still runs from insertion.
The trait doc says what a wrapping backend must forward: both hooks, and the inner WriteBound unchanged.
README: the write-through row says both bounds run from receipt.
Breaking?
No !. set_bytes_with_freshness and __reports_write_bound are #[doc(hidden)] client plumbing, documented as not part of the public surface, and both were added after the last release (cachekit-rs-v0.13.1), so no published version has the old signature.
Tests
Two new tests in backend/cachekitio.rs (writer_l1_copy) write through SlowWriter, a wrapper that forwards both hooks and then waits 1.2 s after the inner PUT returns:
fresh_for_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion: PUT returns Fresh-For: 1, write TTL 300 s.
the_write_ttl_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion: no Fresh-For, write TTL 1 s.
Both read right after the write returns, 1.2 s after receipt, and require the read to miss L1. Red against the old hook signature (commit 87591d4, test only):
test backend::cachekitio::http_client_tests::writer_l1_copy::fresh_for_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion ... FAILED
test backend::cachekitio::http_client_tests::writer_l1_copy::the_write_ttl_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion ... FAILED
panicked at crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs:1824:13: served 1.2 s after a Fresh-For: 1 receipt
panicked at crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs:1839:13: served 1.2 s after receipt of a 1 s write
test result: FAILED. 0 passed; 2 failed
Green with the fix. The existing writer-copy tests pass unchanged in intent: put_reports_the_stores_fresh_for (now also checks received lies between send and return), without_fresh_for_the_copy_keeps_the_write_ttl, a_smaller_fresh_for_bounds_the_copy, a_malformed_fresh_for_keeps_no_copy, a_zero_fresh_for_drops_the_older_copy, a_smaller_fresh_for_bounds_the_copy_through_the_stack.
Local: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --features cachekitio,redis,encryption,l1,macros,memcached,file,tracing -D warnings, cargo test on the same features, cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown --features workers, encryption --no-default-features, all pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Cache entries now age from when the successful write response arrives, rather than when the local copy is stored. Delays before storage therefore reduce the remaining cache lifetime, including when a server-provided freshness limit applies.
If an entry’s lifetime has already elapsed before local storage, it is no longer retained in the local cache.
Walkthrough
The write-freshness result now carries the successful response time and optional Fresh-For duration. Client write paths pass it to L1, which measures entry expiry and SWR freshness from that time. Backend wrappers forward the bound, and tests cover delayed insertion.

Summary
Define and return write bounds crates/cachekit/src/backend/mod.rs, crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs, crates/cachekit/src/reliability.rs
The backend contract and CachekitIO implementation now return an optional WriteBound containing the response-receipt time and optional freshness duration. ReliableBackend forwards the bound. Tests check the reported time.
Anchor L1 expiry to response time crates/cachekit/src/l1/mod.rs, crates/cachekit/src/client.rs, crates/cachekit/src/backend/cachekitio.rs, README.md
L1 entries can retain a supplied creation time. Plain, SWR-refresh and encrypted write paths pass the bound to L1. Delayed-write tests check that freshness and TTL age before insertion, and the README describes this timing.
cachekit-io/cachekit-rs#224: Introduced the write-freshness bound that this change extends with response-receipt timing.
cachekit-io/cachekit-rs#203: Added the shared backend write path that this change extends with freshness-aware writes.
cachekit-io/cachekit-rs#182: Established the L1 expiry and SWR implementation whose entry timestamps this change updates.

Explanation
The title names the main change: the writer's L1 bound now starts at PUT receipt instead of L1 insertion. The changeset matches this. It adds WriteBound, changes the set_bytes_with_freshness signature, and updates l1_set to use receipt time. The title is specific, concise, and includes the ticket reference.

118 of 118 cases measured. A case fails when its median is slower than the base by its floor or more (SLOWER). The floor is 0.5%, and such a case also fails when the head's runs spread by more than that (NOISIER), except l2_hit, whose floor is 2% because its count varies between runs. delete cases are reported, never failed. The writer's own L1 copy now expires at receipt of the
PUT2xxplusmin(write TTL, Fresh-For), asspec/saas-api.mdAPI-103 requires ("the clock starts when the SDK receives the2xx"). Before this, the bound started at L1 insertion, so any delay between the response and the insertion, such as a backend wrapper doing work after the inner write, restarted the copy's clock instead of shortening it.What changed
Backend::set_bytes_with_freshness(both trait variants) returnsOption<WriteBound>instead ofOption<Duration>.WriteBoundcarriesreceived: Instant, taken when the2xxarrives, plus thefresh_forthe response reported. The default still returnsNone, and never reads the clock, so the?Sendtrait stays trap-free onwasm32-unknown-unknown.CachekitIOtakesInstant::now()once, on the2xx.ReliableBackendforwards the inner bound unchanged, so the bound keeps the receipt of the attempt that succeeded.CacheKit::l1_setadmits the entry withL1Cache::set_shared_from(.., received): its TTL and SWR window run from receipt. With noWriteBound(a backend that reports none), the TTL still runs from insertion.WriteBoundunchanged.Breaking?
No
!.set_bytes_with_freshnessand__reports_write_boundare#[doc(hidden)]client plumbing, documented as not part of the public surface, and both were added after the last release (cachekit-rs-v0.13.1), so no published version has the old signature.Tests
Two new tests in
backend/cachekitio.rs(writer_l1_copy) write throughSlowWriter, a wrapper that forwards both hooks and then waits 1.2 s after the innerPUTreturns:fresh_for_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion:PUTreturnsFresh-For: 1, write TTL 300 s.the_write_ttl_runs_from_receipt_not_insertion: noFresh-For, write TTL 1 s.Both read right after the write returns, 1.2 s after receipt, and require the read to miss L1. Red against the old hook signature (commit 87591d4, test only):
Green with the fix. The existing writer-copy tests pass unchanged in intent:
