feat(cachekitio): report L1 hit latency and add a telemetry off switch (LAB-12079) - #691
Implements cachekit-py's side of the protocol's L1 hit-latency telemetry and telemetry switch (spec/saas-api.md).
What changes
L1 hit latency. Every backed @cache call draws, before it runs, whether it is timed (getrandbits(6) == 0, probability 1/64). A timed call that ends as a backed-mode L1 hit adds its whole duration, from wrapper entry to the returned value, to its CachekitIO backend's L1LatencyReport. The backend's next request carries X-CacheKit-L1-Latency-Buckets, -Sum-Ns and -One-In, taken and reset under one lock. Joined in-flight calls, misses, L2 hits, existence checks and direct backend reads are never timed; L1-only mode has no backend and sends nothing.
Report rules. No report on GET /v1/cache/health; the shed-write retry resends the request without its report (it was consumed by the first attempt); a sum-0 report stays unsent; durations over 60 s are dropped; a forked child starts empty (PID check, since some servers fork without at-fork hooks); no report without a qualifying perf_counter clock.
Telemetry switch.CachekitIOBackend(telemetry=...) / CachekitIOBackendConfig.telemetry (unset by default) plus CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY, read once at construction, parsed by the spec's rule, off from either wins. telemetry is filtered out of every pydantic-settings env/dotenv/secrets source, so the config's argument-over-environment precedence cannot let on win over off. Off sends only X-CacheKit-L1-Status (plus User-Agent).
Hit rate.X-CacheKit-L1-Hit-Rate is now L1 / (L1 + L2 + misses), matching the spec and the TypeScript and Rust SDKs.
Tests
tests/unit/backends/test_cachekitio_telemetry.py: one or more tests per SDK-side requirement (API-77 to API-87, API-94 to API-96), named by id, including every cell of the switch's truth table, a real os.fork(), the shed-write retry (sync and async), and durations checked against a fake clock. Full suite: 7951 passed.
Overhead
l1_hit_backed now runs with a reporting backend (telemetry on, the CachekitIO default). Instruction counts against the merge-base (tests/performance/ir_budget.py --base): l1_hit_backed +0.64%, secure_l1_hit (no report, draw only) +0.70%, l2_hit +0.28%, miss +0.22%, l1_hit +0.48%, minimal_l1_hit −0.04%. The draw and the timed-call helpers are module globals rather than closure cells, so the memoised hit's frame does not grow.
A timed call runs through a module-level helper that reads the end clock under the report's lock, after the wrapper restores its context, so lock contention and cleanup count toward the hit. A forked child builds a new report state and publishes it with one assignment, so it never reads the parent's.
Docs
docs/backends/cachekitio.md gains a Telemetry section (what is sent, how latency is sampled, how to turn it off); CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY is added to the env tables in docs/configuration.md and docs/api-reference.md, and a pointer to the README.
With telemetry on (the default during the closed beta), each backed @cache
call is drawn for timing with probability 1/64 before it runs. A timed call
that is an L1 hit adds its whole duration to its CachekitIO backend's report,
which the backend's next request carries as X-CacheKit-L1-Latency-Buckets,
-Sum-Ns and -One-In and empties in one locked step. The health check never
carries a report, the shed-write retry never resends one, a joined call is
never timed and a forked child starts empty (spec/saas-api.md, L1 hit latency).
CachekitIOBackend(telemetry=False) or CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY=false turns off
every optional metrics header; off from either wins. The variable is parsed
by the spec's rule, not bound by pydantic-settings, whose argument-over-
environment precedence would let on win over off.
X-CacheKit-L1-Hit-Rate is now L1 / (L1 + L2 + misses), as the spec and the
other SDKs compute it.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
CachekitIO now reports cache hit metrics and sampled L1-hit latency by default during the closed beta.
Telemetry can be disabled with CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY=false or the backend’s telemetry setting. When disabled, telemetry headers are omitted while cache status and SDK identification headers remain.
Documentation
Updated configuration, API, backend and performance guidance to explain telemetry settings, reported metrics and opt-out behaviour.
Walkthrough
The change adds opt-out controls for CachekitIO telemetry, samples latency for backed-mode L1 hits, and sends accumulated reports with backend request headers. It also updates telemetry documentation, tests, and performance baselines.
The backend resolves telemetry from its constructor setting and CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY. The documentation describes the default, accepted values, and opt-out behaviour.
The decorator samples backed-mode L1 hits and records valid durations in a report. Tests cover sampling, timing, concurrency, and fork handling. Performance workloads and budgets include the report.
The backend sends telemetry headers when enabled and adds an available latency report only to the first request attempt. Tests cover header contents, hit-rate calculation, opt-out behaviour, and retries.

…ime the report-lock wait
A forked child built its new report state by resetting fields one at a time, so a
second child thread could take the parent's hits between the PID update and the
reset. The child now builds a complete state and publishes it with one assignment,
and never touches the inherited one.
A timed hit read its end clock before waiting for the report's lock and before the
wrapper restored its context. Both are paid before the caller gets the value, so the
clock is now read under the lock, after the call returns.

…at fork
The off switch read CACHEKIT_TELEMETRY case-sensitively while every other
CACHEKIT_* variable loads case-insensitively, so cachekit_telemetry=false left
telemetry on. The name now matches in any case, and off from any casing wins.
A forked child now empties every report from an at-fork hook before its own
threads run; the per-use PID check stays for forks that skip Python's hooks.
with_timeout passes the resolved setting, so the clone does not re-read the
environment. A backend first resolved by invalidate_cache now sets the report
its wrapper times into. N is derived from the draw's bit count, so the two
cannot disagree.
l1_hit_backed's instruction budgets are re-recorded on 3.12 and 3.14 for its
reporting backend, and the docs row carries the new figures.
…port state
Without the at-fork hook, two child threads could each build a replacement report
state, and the second assignment discarded hits counted into the first. The
replacement now happens under a lock of the child's own, rechecked inside it. The
hookless fork tests now really bypass the hook and assert every child hit is kept.
…om stream
The 1/64 timing draw used the module-level random instance, so every decorated
call shifted the sequence a user's seeded code reads. It now draws from a private
generator, reseeded in a forked child. The report drops its at-fork hook: the PID
check with its per-process replacement lock already empties a child's report and
keeps every hit its racing threads count.

…ts first report use
A fork made from C runs no at-fork hook, so the child kept its parent's private
sampling sequence and every worker of one master timed the same call positions.
The report's per-PID takeover now reseeds the draw once per process, so the
child's first request or first timed hit gives it a sequence of its own. A PID
check on every draw would close the remaining window, but os.getpid() is a
system call several times the cost of the draw on the hit path; the docs name
the window and the uWSGI flag that avoids it.
…sampling draw
A worker that builds its backend after a fork made from C gets a report whose
state already carries its own PID, so the inherited-state takeover never ran and
the draw kept replaying the parent's sequence. Every report construction and use
now reseeds the draw once per process. The os.fork() reseed test, folded into the
C-fork test by mistake, is its own test again.
… sampling draw
In a child forked from C, the first timed hit was chosen by a draw replayed from
the parent, so every worker of one master timed the same startup call. The record
that reseeds the draw now draws that call again from the child's own sequence and
counts it only if the new draw chooses it. The calls before it, on average the
first 64, stay untimed in every such worker; the docs say so.
… timing draw
The redraw made the hit that reseeds a C-forked child's draw timed with
probability 1/N squared, not 1/N. Without it every call keeps its 1/N chance,
and workers forked from C only time the same positions until their first report
construction or use; the docs state that window. The per-PID replacement lock is
reentrant, so a finalizer calling cachekit under it cannot deadlock. The
instruction-count workload seeds the private draw so every run times the same
calls.

… reentry
The takeover built its new state under the per-PID lock and then assigned it
unconditionally. A garbage-collection finalizer that ran during that allocation
and recorded a hit on the same thread published a state of its own, which the
outer call then overwrote with the hit in it. The new state is now built before
the lock, and only a state still stale under the lock is replaced.
