### Experimental Code Mode

Set `DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE=1` **when starting the server** to try
JavaScript-based tool composition without changing `tools.mode`:

```sh
DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE=1 pnpm dev
```

This overrides the model-facing coding tools with `open_workspace`, `execute`,
`poll_execution`, `cancel_execution`, and `show_changes`. When native artifact
download is enabled, `download_artifact` remains a separate tool. The existing
Codex primitives are available *inside* `execute`, with their JavaScript signatures
returned by `open_workspace` and `workspace_id` bound automatically. Scripts can
use top-level `await` and `return`, but cannot import modules or access Node.js
globals directly.

`execute` returns a result immediately when possible, or an `execution_id` after
its yield window (10 seconds by default, 12 seconds maximum). Use
`poll_execution` with that ID to await completion without rerunning the script,
or `cancel_execution` to stop it. Long-running nested `exec_command` calls return
`session_id` for polling via `tools.write_stdin` inside the script.

The experimental runtime has a five-minute script deadline, up to 32 nested tool
calls and four simultaneous nested calls. Sessions and results are in memory only
and are lost on server restart. Tool calls already performed are **not rolled
back** when a script fails or is cancelled.

Unset the variable or set it to `0` and restart to restore the configured tool
surface. This experimental switch is not a persistent config key.

DevSpace attaches Apps UI metadata only to `open_workspace` and `show_changes`.
This avoids rendering an iframe for every read, edit, search, or command call.

P2 Too many workers at once

start() accepts unlimited simultaneous executions. Each gets a separate worker with a 256 MiB memory allowance; the four-call limit applies only within one script. A burst of execute calls with yield_time_ms: 0 can keep creating workers for five minutes, slowing or exhausting the local server.

As a non-blocking improvement, add a server-wide or workspace-wide execution cap and reject or queue excess starts.

Knowledge Base Used: Bound stale MCP session memory

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • This authored and executed TypeScript harness invokes the real manager start path, observes real workers, holds bounded tool calls, asserts concurrency and configuration, and shuts everything down.

Evidence from the check

  • This authored and executed Python script runs the four-script and six-script cases and captures their actual output with command, working directory, and exit code.

Command output from the check

  • The executed control held four scripts in four real workers and observed sixteen nested calls before successful completion and cleanup, establishing the comparison baseline.

Command output from the check

  • The executed challenge held six scripts in six real workers with individual 256 MiB configured allowances and twenty-four nested calls, confirming no shared four-worker admission limit.

P1 Cancelled commands keep running

Cancelling while tools.exec_command waits for its first result can leave the command running. Its session ID is recorded only after the handler returns. The worker stops without waiting for that handler, so both cleanup passes can finish before the ID arrives. The callback then adds the ID without stopping the process, allowing it to keep changing files after cancellation.

Track the process when it starts, or stop late-arriving sessions when the execution has already ended. This cancellation defect must be fixed before merging.

Knowledge Base Used: CLI and host process management

Artifacts

Evidence from the check

  • The executed script uses unchanged production managers and tool handlers to compare cancellation timing and assert post-cancellation writes, reproducing the claimed race.

Evidence from the check

  • The executed runner captures each integration command, working directory, exit code, stdout, and stderr, making both runs reproducible.

Command output from the check

  • The real integration run cancelled an already registered command and observed child termination without filesystem writes, establishing the control.

Command output from the check

  • The real integration run observed completed cancellation followed by late session registration and continuing timestamped writes, confirming the defect.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the concurrency limiter so it holds four calls at most.

The finally block runs active-- and then wakes a waiter with waiters.shift()?.(). The waiter does not run active++ at once, because it resumes later as a microtask. During that gap, a new call can find active < MAX_CONCURRENT_CALLS and run active++ directly. The woken waiter then also runs active++. The result is five or more concurrent nested calls. The docs and PR description promise four at most. Fix this by handing the slot to the waiter: when a waiter exists, do not decrement active.

Review comment at @src/code-mode-executions.ts around lines 153 - 160:
Update the concurrency limiter around tool.execute so a call that waits reuses
the slot handed off to it instead of incrementing active again. In the finally
block, wake a queued waiter without decrementing active; decrement active only
when no waiter is available.
