📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Code Mode can occasionally exceed its advertised four-call concurrency limit. The issue is bounded, but the limiter should be corrected before relying on that limit. Pre-merge checks |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fix the concurrency limiter so it holds four calls at most.
The finally block runs active-- and then wakes a waiter with waiters.shift()?.(). The waiter does not run active++ at once, because it resumes later as a microtask. During that gap, a new call can find active < MAX_CONCURRENT_CALLS and run active++ directly. The woken waiter then also runs active++. The result is five or more concurrent nested calls. The docs and PR description promise four at most. Fix this by handing the slot to the waiter: when a waiter exists, do not decrement active.

Cancelled commands keep running
Cancelling while tools.exec_command waits for its first result can leave the command running. Its session ID is recorded only after the handler returns. The worker stops without waiting for that handler, so both cleanup passes can finish before the ID arrives. The callback then adds the ID without stopping the process, allowing it to keep changing files after cancellation.
Track the process when it starts, or stop late-arriving sessions when the execution has already ended. This cancellation defect must be fixed before merging.
Knowledge Base Used: CLI and host process management
Artifacts
- The executed script uses unchanged production managers and tool handlers to compare cancellation timing and assert post-cancellation writes, reproducing the claimed race.
- The executed runner captures each integration command, working directory, exit code, stdout, and stderr, making both runs reproducible.
- The real integration run cancelled an already registered command and observed child termination without filesystem writes, establishing the control.
- The real integration run observed completed cancellation followed by late session registration and continuing timestamped writes, confirming the defect.

Scripts outlive server closure
createMcpServer creates a private CodeModeExecutions but never connects its shutdown() to server.close(). Once execute returns a running execution_id, closing this server only closes the MCP connection. The worker can continue until its five-minute deadline, and started commands can remain alive after the caller closes the workspace store.
Add execution cleanup to this server’s close path, as the HTTP server already does. This shutdown defect must be fixed before merging.
Knowledge Base Used: MCP server and workspace API
Artifacts
- The authored TypeScript harness runs the real in-memory MCP fixture with a post-close release gate and an optional shutdown connection, demonstrating the precise lifecycle claim without production edits.
- Ran the harness against unmodified PR399 head and captured full MCP responses plus two mutations after server.close() resolved, confirming that both the command and script outlive closure.
- Ran the same fixture with shutdown awaited during closure and captured both markers remaining absent after the gate was released, showing that connecting execution shutdown prevents the reproduced effects.

start() accepts unlimited simultaneous executions. Each gets a separate worker with a 256 MiB memory allowance; the four-call limit applies only within one script. A burst of execute calls with yield_time_ms: 0 can keep creating workers for five minutes, slowing or exhausting the local server.
As a non-blocking improvement, add a server-wide or workspace-wide execution cap and reject or queue excess starts.
Knowledge Base Used: Bound stale MCP session memory
Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!
Artifacts
- This authored and executed TypeScript harness invokes the real manager start path, observes real workers, holds bounded tool calls, asserts concurrency and configuration, and shuts everything down.
- This authored and executed Python script runs the four-script and six-script cases and captures their actual output with command, working directory, and exit code.
- The executed control held four scripts in four real workers and observed sixteen nested calls before successful completion and cleanup, establishing the comparison baseline.
- The executed challenge held six scripts in six real workers with individual 256 MiB configured allowances and twenty-four nested calls, confirming no shared four-worker admission limit.
Coding agents already batch shell commands, but composing workspace reads, patches, and process sessions still requires repeated MCP round trips. This experimental surface lets the model run JavaScript against existing DevSpace tool handlers, with generated signatures supplied by
open_workspaceand automatic workspace binding. An isolated QuickJS worker executes the script while normal validation and workspace restrictions remain in place.Enable with
DEVSPACE_EXPERIMENTAL_CODE_MODE=1at server startup. It exposesexecute,poll_execution, andcancel_executionalongsideopen_workspaceand the nativeshow_changesreview card; with the flag unset, existing tool modes are unchanged. Long scripts return an execution ID rather than holding the MCP call open. Scripts are bounded by a five-minute deadline, 32 nested calls, and four concurrent nested calls. This is intentionally a server-local experiment: executions do not survive a restart, and completed tool operations are not rolled back on failure or cancellation. Native artifact download remains available separately when enabled.
