Stability and safety baseline (phase 1 of 3) - #87
First of three stacked PRs (stability → scanner → migration) that put the plugin into honest maintenance mode: safe for the ~4,000 installs that have it, with a documented way out. ROADMAP.md holds the evidence, phases, acceptance criteria and decisions.
What shipped
Asset loading (bootstrap-shortcodes.php, js/init.js): frontend assets move from init to wp_enqueue_scripts (admin CSS to admin_enqueue_scripts). bs_init no longer hard-depends on the bs_bootstrap handle: with "Load Twitter Bootstrap javascript file" off (the documented theme-provided setup) WordPress silently dropped init.js, so tooltips never initialised. Reproduced with a regression test. init.js also bails out quietly when no tooltip plugin is present.
Settings lifecycle: activation seeds defaults only when no settings exist (reactivation used to reset every choice; reproduced, fixed, tested). Settings are sanitised to the known checkbox keys.
Conditional loading, opt-in and off by default: assets load only when a post in the main query uses a bs_ shortcode, with a render-time fallback (late styles) for widgets/templates/custom fields and a bs_shortcodes_load_assets filter. The settings text says plainly when not to use it.
Escaping audit by output context: every handler attribute is quoted and escaped; ShortcodeEscapingTest feeds quote-breaking values, inline handlers and javascript: URLs through every attribute of every tag and checks the parsed DOM. All 14 cases already passed on the current code; the test pins the class of bug fixed in 3.4.6.
Accessibility, no layout change: labelled alert close button, aria-expanded/aria-controls and correct collapsed state on collapse toggles, WAI-ARIA roles on tabs, aria-hidden icons.
Behaviour fixes: nested shortcodes render inside [bs_label]; tooltip titles are no longer cut at ~20 characters (a mis-quoted '\n' since the beginning).
Dialog jQuery 1.11.1 → 3.7.1 (editor iframes only; the frontend uses WordPress's jQuery). SRI hash in the commit.
Support policy: Requires at least: 5.0, Requires PHP: 7.4, Tested up to: 7.1, maintenance-mode wording in the readme; docs/compatibility.md records what was actually tested; docs/security.md separates renderer issues from bundled-dependency advisories (CVE-2024-6484/6485 assessed: disputed upstream, not reachable through the shortcodes).

Verification
PHPUnit: 81 tests on WP 7.1.4 / PHP 8.3 and on WP 6.4.7 / PHP 7.4 (scratch wp-env stack).
Playwright: 17 tests, including the new specs/frontend.spec.js: every component rendered and driven (tabs, collapse, tooltip, alert dismiss) under plugin-provided Bootstrap, theme-provided Bootstrap with the bundled files off (test mu-plugin loads Bootstrap in the footer, after init.js), static-only with the bundled JS off, conditional loading, and content saved as a block-editor Shortcode block.
Every component rendered on WP 6.4.7 / PHP 7.4 via wp-cli + curl; deactivate/reactivate keeps settings there too.
Not verified: multisite; WordPress 5.0–6.3 (floor declared, not exercised); CI on PHP 8.2 runs on this PR.
Deferred
Nothing from phase 1. Phases 2 and 3 follow as stacked PRs.
Replaces the direction in future_work.md (Bootstrap 5 upgrade, OOP refactor,
Gutenberg blocks) with the three outcomes that fit a plugin in maintenance
mode: safe operation, a dependency scanner, and a migration path off it.

….js depending on the bundled Bootstrap handle
- Enqueue on wp_enqueue_scripts / admin_enqueue_scripts instead of init.
- bs_init now depends on jquery, and on bs_bootstrap only when the bundled
Bootstrap JS is enabled. Before, turning that option off (the documented
way to use a theme's Bootstrap) silently dropped init.js, so tooltips
never initialised. init.js also bails out if no tooltip plugin is present.
- Activation seeds defaults only when no settings exist; reactivating no
longer resets the site's choices.
- Settings are sanitised to the known checkbox keys on save.
- New opt-in "conditional loading" setting (off by default): assets load
only when a post in the main query uses a bs_ shortcode, with a
render-time fallback for widgets/templates/custom fields and a
bs_shortcodes_load_assets filter.

… 3's accessible reference markup
- Alert close button gets aria-label="Close" with the × hidden, instead of
hiding the button itself from assistive tech.
- Collapse toggles point aria-controls at the panel (was the heading), carry
aria-expanded, and only have the "collapsed" class when closed.
- Tabs carry role="tablist" / "presentation" / "tab" / "tabpanel".
- Icons are aria-hidden.
No layout changes; existing assertions updated where the markup grew.

A single-quoted '\n' meant wordwrap() inserted a literal backslash-n and
explode() split on it, so the title was always the first ~20 characters.
The title is now the full (trimmed) text, the same as the link.

Data-provider test feeding quote-breaking values, inline event handlers and
javascript: URLs through each shortcode attribute and checking the parsed DOM.
All cases already passed; this pins the class of bug fixed in 3.4.6.

… no-Bootstrap-JS setups
Adds specs/frontend.spec.js: creates a post with every shortcode (plus one
saved as a block-editor Shortcode block), toggles the plugin's asset
settings through the real settings page, and checks tabs, collapse,
tooltip and alert dismissal in the browser under four setups:
plugin-provided Bootstrap, theme-provided Bootstrap with the bundled
CSS/JS off, static-only with the bundled JS off, and conditional loading.
The theme case uses a test-only mu-plugin (tests/e2e-support, mounted by
.wp-env.json) that enqueues Bootstrap under its own handles, in the
footer, only when ?e2e_theme_bootstrap=1 is present. test:e2e now also
activates the test theme explicitly so the frontend is deterministic.

Walkthrough
The PR updates plugin asset settings and loading, changes several shortcode outputs, and adds PHPUnit and Playwright coverage. It also adds maintenance, compatibility, and security documentation and updates the E2E environment configuration.
Changes
Plugin maintenance
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Asset settings and conditional loading bootstrap-shortcodes.php, tests/phpunit/PluginAssetsTest.php, tests/phpunit/PluginSettingsTest.php
The plugin adds settings sanitization and an opt-in conditional-loading setting. It checks queried post content for registered shortcodes, with a render-time enqueue path for shortcode output outside the main query. PHPUnit tests cover settings retention, sanitization, asset selection, and enqueueing.
Shortcode output changes include accessibility attributes, updated collapse state and controls, nested shortcode rendering in labels, and full tooltip titles. Tooltip initialization retries on window load if the Bootstrap tooltip plugin is unavailable. PHPUnit tests cover these changes and check shortcode output against injected markup.
The E2E setup maps a test MU-plugin and activates the Twenty Twenty-One theme. The MU-plugin can enqueue Bootstrap assets as theme assets when the test URL parameter is set. Playwright specs cover asset configurations, shortcode interactions, and a Shortcode block.
Maintenance scope and support documentation ROADMAP.md, docs/compatibility.md, docs/security.md, readme.txt, future_work.md
The roadmap describes maintenance, dependency-scanning, and migration plans. The README and compatibility and security documents describe supported versions, plugin behavior, and security and dependency details. The former future-work document is deleted.
The plugin's support floor is declared only in the readme, so WordPress may not enforce it for installed sites. Some new documentation also links to missing files or states outdated or incorrect facts. Tab accessibility markup is only partly wired. These are bounded issues that are worth fixing before or shortly after merge, and none is likely to break site behavior.

Make the theme fixture exercise the tooltip retry.
This regular footer script runs before document ready. As a result, js/init.js finds Bootstrap on its first check, and the theme-provided-assets test passes even if the window-load retry breaks. Load the fixture script after document ready, while keeping it before window load, and assert that the retry initializes the tooltip. (developer.wordpress.org)
