Phase 3: migration off the plugin, with an assets companion (stacked on #scanner)

Every supported shortcode gets a tested destination; migration is explicit, previewable, batched, reversible; and sites that still need Bootstrap 3 get a documented, separate bridge. docs/migration.md has the component matrix and the removal checklist.

What shipped

  • inc/class-bs-migrator.php: converter. Modes blocks / html / auto (blocks only for posts that already have blocks); styling inline (self-contained: inline styles, inline SVG icons extracted from the bundled Glyphicons font, wells/alerts as Custom HTML blocks) or classes (Bootstrap class names only). Grid → Columns (widths from col-*-N), standalone buttons → Buttons, lead → Paragraph (large preset), collapse and tabs → Details sections grouped by name (tabs become sections: a disclosed semantic change), labels/tooltips/inline buttons → inline HTML. Block documents are walked block by block (Shortcode blocks replaced, Classic/Paragraph/HTML blocks converted in place, inner blocks recursed) and block output round-trips losslessly through parse_blocks/serialize_blocks. Unbalanced tags, escaped [[bs_x]] and unknown bs_ tags are left in place and listed; every dropped or approximated behaviour is a note.
  • inc/class-bs-migration.php: preview, apply (stale check on post_modified_gmt, original kept in _bs_migration_original and never overwritten, revision via wp_update_post), rollback (byte-identical, independent of revisions), bounded batches that read each post fresh.
  • inc/class-bs-admin-migration.php: preview page with wp_text_diff(), notes, skipped list and dependencies; migrate one / selected / AJAX batches of 10 with a no-JS fallback; migrated-posts list with roll back; all manage_options + nonces; nothing runs on activation, update or cron.
  • Companion companion/bootstrap-legacy-assets/: a separate, minimal plugin (CSS, JS, Glyphicons, tooltip init; three switches; no shortcodes) that stays idle while this plugin loads assets and skips files the theme already registers. inc/class-bs-companion.php builds its zip from this plugin's files (ZipArchive or PclZip) and installs it through Plugin_Upgrader only after an explicit consent checkbox; where PHP cannot write the plugins directory it says so and offers the zip for manual upload. The UI states plainly that the site then depends on end-of-life Bootstrap 3.

Decisions taken

Decision Applied Alternative
Accordion (6.9) / Tabs (7.1) core blocks as targets no: both are Interactivity-API blocks whose save markup must match the editor exactly; Details is static and stable. Documented as a manual editor step afterwards hand-author their markup and risk "invalid block" prompts
Default styling self-contained (inline styles / inline SVG) classes-only
Companion distribution source in repo, zip built in-admin, installed via core's upgrader with consent; no WordPress.org listing publish the companion on WordPress.org
Glyphicons as inline SVG yes, from the bundled font (shipped under Bootstrap's MIT licence; attribution in docs) keep <i class="glyphicon"> and require the font

Live services

None. This PR makes no outbound network calls: the scanner's "share" step is a copy/export the admin sends by hand, and the companion zip is built from this plugin's own files on the site and installed through core's upgrader from a local path. The hosted report receiver (docs/reporting-receiver.md) is a design only. It is not built, deployed or called from here.

Verification

  • PHPUnit: 173 tests, green on WP 7.1.4 / PHP 8.3 and on WP 6.4.7 / PHP 7.4 (one skip there by design: the Details name assertion needs 6.8+) (MigratorConvertTest 45, MigrationApplyTest 13, AdminMigrationTest 2, CompanionTest 8 including a real install through Plugin_Upgrader).
  • Playwright specs/migration.spec.js: scan → preview (diff, notes) → migrate one → roll back (REST confirms byte-identical original) → batch-migrate both posts via AJAX → re-scan shows nothing left → both migrated posts opened in the block editor with no invalid-block warning → companion consent refused without the box, then installed and activated → Bootstrap Shortcodes deactivated → columns, button, well/label colours, inline SVG icon, native tooltip, Details (click, keyboard, exclusive group), tab sections checked at 1280px and 390px; companion serves shortcodes.css and the sprite → companion deactivated too, self-contained content still styled → plugin reactivated. 20/20 green, CI green.
  • Not verified: multisite; real customer content (fixtures are hand-written); page-builder meta is reported but not rewritten, by design.

Review history

  • CodeRabbit's eight findings on the first push were fixed in 9e12010 (backslashes lost through wp_update_post/add_post_meta, kses silently altering content for users without unfiltered_html, the companion dropping the tooltip initialiser, docs). CodeRabbit was rate-limited and never reviewed that push.
  • A fresh full-diff review before merge found ten more converter/companion defects, fixed in 83d76e9 with a regression test each: block-level components inside a paragraph made <div>-in-<p> (now left in place and listed); classes-style alerts were invalid Group blocks (role); a stray bs_col became an orphan Column; skipped items were listed twice; bs_row class="x" gained row; collapse items without parent became an exclusive accordion; button style losses were not noted; icon-* sprites and shortcodes.css were missing from the companion; the companion stayed idle when conditional loading was on; the rollback list missed reusable blocks, templates and trash.
  • CodeRabbit reviewed 83d76e9 and raised seven findings, all fixed in 314dbe2. Code changes: a filtered migration is now refused before anything is written, and rollback refuses instead of stripping markup the current user may not save (both writes are verified afterwards). The Details block's name (WP 6.8+) and the block itself (6.3+) are checked against the installed WordPress so older sites don't get invalid blocks. The e2e restores the editor settings in finally. The other four were documentation fixes, including the receiver design's TTLs and its approximate KV counter.

Explanation

The title "Migration off the plugin and legacy-assets companion (phase 3 of 3)" matches the main change. The changeset adds a shortcode migrator, preview/apply/rollback logic, admin migration UI, and the Bootstrap 3 legacy-assets companion plugin, and the title names both. The title is specific and concise. The phrase "phase 3 of 3" is a process label, not a description, but it does not make the title misleading.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is directly related to the changeset. It describes the converter, migration and rollback logic, admin migration page, the Bootstrap 3 companion plugin, companion ZIP installation with consent, the decisions taken, and the test and Playwright verification. It also covers the hosted report receiver design, which is a documented file in the changeset.

…eview, batches, rollback and an assets companion

Every supported shortcode now has a tested destination (docs/migration.md):
grid -> Columns, standalone buttons -> Buttons, lead -> Paragraph, wells
and alerts -> Custom HTML (self-contained) or Group (classes), collapse
and tabs -> Details sections (name-grouped), labels/tooltips/inline
buttons -> inline HTML, icons -> inline SVG extracted from the bundled
Glyphicons font. Output is block markup (round-trips losslessly through
core's parser so the editor never flags it) or plain HTML for classic
posts; styling is self-contained by default or Bootstrap-classes-only.
Unbalanced tags, escaped [[bs_x]] and unknown bs_ tags are left in place
and listed; dropped behaviour (alert dismiss, tooltip placement, grid
offsets, tabs -> sections) is reported as notes stored with the post.

Tools page gains: per-post preview with a wp_text_diff() diff and a
stale-check on apply; migrate one / selected / in AJAX batches (no-JS
fallback); originals kept in _bs_migration_original (never overwritten)
plus the usual revision; roll back selected; a migrated-posts list.

Companion: companion/bootstrap-legacy-assets is a minimal separate
plugin (CSS, JS, Glyphicons, tooltip init; three switches; no
shortcodes) that stays idle while this plugin loads assets and skips
files a theme already registers. The migration page builds its zip from
this plugin's files and installs it through core's Plugin_Upgrader only
after an explicit consent checkbox, or offers the zip for manual upload
where PHP cannot write to the plugins directory.

Verified end to end in specs/migration.spec.js: scan, preview, migrate,
roll back (byte-identical), batch, re-scan clean, companion install,
deactivate Bootstrap Shortcodes, then columns/buttons/wells/labels/svg
icons/lead/details (click + keyboard, exclusive group)/tab sections/
native tooltips on desktop and a 390px viewport, with and without the
companion. release-it now also bumps BS_SHORTCODES_VERSION.

Document the KV kill-switch propagation delay.

Workers KV is eventually consistent. A paused change can remain stale in another location for up to 60 seconds or the configured cacheTtl. Document this limit. If the kill switch must stop writes immediately, use a strongly consistent control instead.

- Slash content before add_post_meta() and wp_update_post(): both
unslash their input, so backslashes (Windows paths, regexes, block
attribute escapes such as \u002d\u002d) were lost on migration and the
stored original could not be restored byte for byte. Test added.
- After writing, compare the saved content with the preview; if WordPress
filtered it (no unfiltered_html: inline SVG icons, details name=...),
restore the original, drop the backup and return bs_filtered instead of
leaving a silently different post. Test added (author role).
- Companion install always enables the tooltip initialiser: the original
loads init.js regardless of the JS setting since phase 1.
- Playwright: open both migrated posts in the block editor (forcing it past
the Classic Editor plugin's per-post default) and assert no block shows
the invalid-content warning; docs/migration.md now describes exactly
that instead of over-claiming from the PHP round-trip test.
- docs/reporting-receiver.md: account-shared Workers Free quotas, a
  supported 60 s rate-limit period with approximate per-location counters,
the authenticated stats route in the allowlist, a 2 KB body cap, a
300 records/day ingestion cap and 12-month TTL so storage stays under
the 1 GB KV Free limit.

…panion

A fresh review of the whole PR (the fix pushes were never re-reviewed by
CodeRabbit) found ten defects, each now covered by a test:

- Block-level components (row, col, well, alert, lead, collapse, tabs)
written inside a paragraph, heading or list item of a block post were
converted in place, putting a <div> inside a <p> (broken layout, invalid
block). They are now left in place and listed ("inline-context"); only
Classic and Custom HTML blocks take block-level markup in place.
- html mode on a block document goes through the block walker too, so it
never nests a div in a paragraph either.
- Skipped occurrences inside a block were listed twice (innerHTML and
innerContent both processed); counted once now.
- Alerts as Group blocks (classes styling) no longer carry role="alert",
which Group's save() cannot write and so made the block invalid; noted.
- A bs_col outside any bs_row now gets its own Columns parent instead of a
bare, misplaced Column block. Drops the unused $top_level parameter.
- bs_row with a custom class keeps exactly that class in HTML output, as the
handler did (shortcode_atts default), instead of adding "row".
- bs_citem items are grouped (<details name>) by their parent attribute, as
Bootstrap's data-parent worked; items without one stay independent rather
than becoming an exclusive accordion that hides open content.
- Standalone buttons that lose a type/size in the Button block say so.
- Old icon-* sprite icons depend on the Bootstrap CSS bundle (shortcodes.css),
and the companion now ships and loads shortcodes.css plus the sprite PNG.
- With conditional loading on, the companion covers pages where Bootstrap
Shortcodes loads nothing, and Bootstrap Shortcodes' render-time fallback
stands down when the companion's files are already queued.
- The migrated-posts list (rollback UI) covers every type and status the
scan covers, including reusable blocks, templates and trash.

Verified: PHPUnit 169/169 on WP 7.1.4 / PHP 8.3 and WP 6.4.7 / PHP 7.4;
Playwright 20/20 (now also asserts the companion serves shortcodes.css and
the sprite).

- Refuse before writing when kses would alter the converted markup (users
without unfiltered_html), instead of writing and then restoring: no
revision, no modified date change. Rollback does the same check, so a
restore can no longer strip markup the original held (an embed, a
script) that the current user may not save. Both writes are verified
afterwards; if any other filter changed them, the stored original is
kept and the error says where it is. The message no longer promises
that an administrator can run it (DISALLOW_UNFILTERED_HTML).
- Details output matches what the installed WordPress can save: the
block's `name` attribute exists only from 6.8, so on 6.3-6.7 grouping is
left out and noted (the editor would flag the block as invalid); below
6.3, where there is no Details block, each item is a Custom HTML block
holding a <details>. Checked against the registered block type, not the
  version string.
- Playwright restores the Classic Editor settings in a finally block, so a
failed editor check cannot break the TinyMCE specs that follow.
- docs/migration.md: list items need the shortcode moved out of the list;
companion settings are copied only when installed from the migration
  page; Details version notes.
- docs/reporting-receiver.md: derived count/stats keys get TTLs; the KV
ingestion counter is documented as approximate, with the account's
1,000 writes/day as the hard ceiling and a Durable Object counter as the
  exact option.

Verified: PHPUnit 173/173 on WP 7.1.4 / PHP 8.3, 173 (1 skipped: the
6.8+ name assertion) on WP 6.4.7 / PHP 7.4; Playwright 20/20.

CodeRabbit's nitpick on the first review: a paused flag in KV can take
up to about 60 seconds to reach other locations, so say so and name the
immediate stop (disable the route or delete the Worker).

Review ledger: every automated review finding and what happened to it

All 18 findings from the three automated reviews (8 + 1 nitpick on da7f233, 7 on 83d76e9, 2 on cc743d2) are addressed. Each thread has a reply naming the commit and the test, and every thread is resolved.

The receiver (rows 5–7 and 13–18) is a design document only: nothing is built or deployed, and nothing in this PR calls it.

A separate full pre-merge review (83d76e9) found and fixed 10 more converter and companion defects; the commit message lists them.

The last automated review covered everything up to cc743d2. Only 29246a7, a two-line docs change answering that review, has not been reviewed.

docs/reporting-receiver.md:3-6
Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Make the WordPress sender's HTTP headers explicit before building the trial.

The later wp_remote_post() design must set Content-Type: application/json; WordPress defaults headers to an empty array. It must also override the default User-Agent, which includes the WordPress version and site URL. Otherwise the sender can fail the receiver's media-type check and violate the requirement that the client add no site URL. (developer.wordpress.org)

- Line 68: Update the Kill switch guidance to clarify that disabling a route may
leave workers.dev Version, Preview, or Deployment URLs able to reach the Worker
while paused propagates; identify deleting the Worker as the immediate-stop
procedure, or require protecting and shutting down every public URL.
- Line 70: Update the ingestion-cap guidance for the `count:YYYY-MM-DD` KV
counter to define partial-write handling: return 202 only after both the record
and counter writes succeed, and specify rollback or idempotency when either
write fails. If KV cannot ensure this behavior, document using a transactional
D1 or SQLite-backed Durable Object flow.

… order

CodeRabbit on cc743d2: disabling a route leaves version, preview and
deployment URLs reachable, so the immediate stop is deleting the Worker;
and the record and counter writes need a defined order and failure
handling (record first, 202 only after both, 503 on a failed record).
