fix(testtools): declare vitest as a peer dependency - #2909
@zenstackhq/testtools imports vitest at runtime (client.ts and schema.ts use expect, and vitest-ext.ts extends it), but vitest isn't listed anywhere in its package.json. In the monorepo it resolves from the root, but a consumer without vitest installed gets Cannot find module 'vitest' as soon as they import the package.
The package is pretty tightly tied to vitest, so I didn't try to remove the dependency. This change just makes it explicit:
adds vitest to peerDependencies, so package managers warn when it's missing (or auto-install it with pnpm/npm 7+)
adds it to devDependencies too, so the workspace install stays the same
adds the matching importer entry to pnpm-lock.yaml (I edited it by hand to keep the diff small, and pnpm install --frozen-lockfile passes)
Regression test: tests/regression/test/issue-2659.test.ts scans the non-type imports in packages/testtools/src and checks that every bare package is listed in dependencies or peerDependencies. Before this change it fails with expected [ 'vitest' ] to deeply equal [], and with the change it passes.
I used the ^4.0.14 range from the root package.json. If you'd rather add vitest to the pnpm catalog, I can move it there.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Chores
Added Vitest as a development and peer dependency for the test tools package.
Tests
Added a regression check to verify that packages imported by the test tools are declared as dependencies.
testtools imports vitest at runtime (client.ts, schema.ts, vitest-ext.ts)
but never listed it in package.json, so installs that don't happen to
have vitest fail with "Cannot find module 'vitest'".
Fixeszenstackhq#2659
The testtools package adds Vitest to its peer and development dependencies. A regression test checks whether runtime package imports in its source files are declared as dependencies or peer dependencies.
Changes: Testtools dependency declaration

Summary
Declare Vitest and check runtime imports packages/testtools/package.json, tests/regression/test/issue-2659.test.ts
The package manifest adds Vitest ^4.0.14 as a peer and development dependency. The regression test checks runtime imports against declared dependencies and peer dependencies.
The dependency declaration is mergeable with normal checks, but it does not fully resolve existing Jest compatibility or missing-peer installation problems.

The regression test supports the same dependency fix. The lockfile change is excluded from review (ignoredFiles rule "!**/pnpm-lock.yaml"). Its relation to this PR is inferred from the PR description, not verified from its content. No unrelated changes were found in the reviewable files.

Explanation
Issue #2659 requires that importing @zenstackhq/testtools must not fail with "Cannot find module 'vitest'" for Jest consumers. The issue states that consumers should not need to add vitest themselves. The PR adds vitest only as a peerDependency and a devDependency. The runtime imports in packages/testtools/src (client.ts, schema.ts, vitest-ext.ts) are unchanged, so the package still requires vitest at runtime. A peerDependency does not install vitest for every package manager. The PR description says auto-install happens only with pnpm or npm 7+. The issue reporter uses yarn, which does not auto-install peers. For those consumers, the import still fails, and the change only adds a peer warning. The new regression test checks that imports are declared in package.json. It does not check that the package loads without vitest installed, so it does not verify the reported failure. The pnpm-lock.yaml change is excluded from review (ignoredFiles rule "!**/pnpm-lock.yaml"), so it was not inspected. This does not change the result, because the lockfile does not affect runtime resolution for consumers. No repository inspection tool was available. The result relies on the PR summary, the diff summary, and the PR description.
Resolution
Make the package load without vitest installed. Options include: (a) move the vitest-dependent code (vitest-ext.ts and the expect usage in client.ts and schema.ts) behind a lazy or conditional import, so that loadSchema and the other non-vitest exports do not resolve vitest at module load; or (b) move vitest from peerDependencies to dependencies so every install provides it. Then add a regression test that loads the package entry points in an environment where vitest cannot be resolved, and confirm that the import succeeds.

Jest CommonJS consumers still cannot load loadSchema.
The root entry imports vitest at load time. Vitest's CommonJS entry fails on require(), so the peer dependency only changes the error from a missing module to a Vitest load error. Move the Vitest-dependent helpers out of the root entry, or expose them on a separate subpath.

Declare vitest in dependencies so consumers do not need to install it.
The root entry re-exports schema and vitest-ext. Both modules import expect from vitest at top level. A consumer whose package manager does not auto-install peers receives no vitest. Importing loadSchema from the package root then fails with Cannot find module 'vitest'. Issue #2659 asks that consumers not need to add vitest themselves, and this declaration does not provide that for these consumers.
Move vitest from peerDependencies to dependencies, then update pnpm-lock.yaml so pnpm install --frozen-lockfile passes. The regression test still passes because it checks dependencies as well. The devDependencies entry can be removed because dependencies now covers it.
Moving the Vitest-dependent exports to a separate entry point is the other option. It changes the public import surface, so it is a larger change.

I went with a peer on purpose. vitest-ext calls expect.extend, which only works if testtools and the consumer's tests share the same vitest instance. As a regular dependency, a project on a different vitest version would get a second copy, and the matchers would register on the wrong expect. pnpm and npm 7+ install peers automatically, and yarn warns. That said, happy to switch it to dependencies if the maintainers prefer.
For Vitest 4, what are the documented requirements for importing expect from vitest and registering custom matchers with expect.extend? Can vitest be imported outside the Vitest runner?
Length of output: 15257
@thelastbackspace Thanks for explaining the peer dependency. I withdraw my recommendation to move Vitest to dependencies: a separate copy could cause matcher registration to affect a different expect instance.
The original #2659 concern remains: the root entry imports Vitest, so consumers whose package manager does not install peers can still encounter a missing-module error. The regression test checks declarations, not package loading.
To verify both requirements, I recommend testing the packed package in Jest without Vitest and testing matcher registration in a Vitest consumer. I inspected the source but did not run those tests.
