fix(orm): skip a @@validate rule on update when the update sends none of its fields - #2905
The update data schema checks @@validate rules against the update payload. The payload holds only the fields the update changes. In the evaluator, a field left out is ABSENT, and == / != treat ABSENT as null. So this rule rejects every update that leaves out both fields:
@@validate(useCase != null || modelName != null, 'needs a use case or a model')
awaitdb.bot.update({where: { id },data: {name: 'b'}});// rejected, although the row has a use case
update, updateMany, the update branch of upsert, and a nested update through a relation all fail on dev. ZenStack v2 accepted these updates: it did not check @@validate on the update input, only on the full entity after the update.
Fix
An update that sends none of the fields a rule references cannot change the rule's result. So the update data schema now skips such a rule.
addCustomValidation in @zenstackhq/zod takes an optional options.partial. With it, a rule's refinement returns true for data that holds none of the rule's field references. Without it, behavior is unchanged.
options.relationForeignKeys maps each relation field to the foreign keys it sets. In partial mode, a relation field in the data counts as sending those foreign keys, unless it holds only a nested update, which writes to the related row only. So author: { disconnect: true } still checks a rule that reads authorId, and author: { update: { name: 'x' } } does not.
makeUpdateDataSchema passes partial: true and the model's relation foreign keys for both the checked and unchecked variants.
collectFieldRefs now collects this.field. Before, a rule written as this.amount > 0 had no references, so partial mode would always skip it. This also affects the existing presentFields path: such a rule is now skipped there when amount is absent, like any other rule.
A rule that references a field the update sends is checked exactly as before. So the partial-update cases in custom-validation.test.ts, which send one of a rule's two fields, still reject. author: { connect: { id: 1 } } is still rejected by a rule such as authorId != null, because the payload has no authorId. It is rejected the same way on dev, so this PR does not change it. The gap in #2833 (a cross-field comparison that passes when one operand is left out) does not change. Checking rules on the merged row, as v2 did, would close both, but it is a larger change.
Tests
tests/regression/test/issue-2904.test.ts: update, updateMany, upsert and a nested update that leave out the rule's fields are accepted. An update that clears both fields is still rejected, and create still checks the rule. A relation disconnect that clears a foreign key a rule reads is still rejected, and so is a this.amount rule. A nested update of that relation is accepted. The first test fails on dev and passes with the fix. The disconnect and this.amount tests fail on the first commit alone, the nested update test fails on the second commit, and all pass now.
After the review fixes, on SQLite: zod 579 passed, regression 287 passed, e2e 1121 passed, orm 7 passed. The only failures were the 2 MySQL timezone tests (no MySQL server here), which fail the same way on dev. Lint has warnings only, none in changed files.
Before the review fixes, on SQLite and PostgreSQL: regression 284 passed, e2e 1121 passed (SQLite) and 1042 passed (PostgreSQL), zod 579 passed, plus every other package's tests. The only failures were the MySQL timezone tests (no MySQL server here), now-function.test.ts on PostgreSQL, and rpc-openapi.test.ts on PostgreSQL ("database is being accessed by other users"). All three fail the same way on unchanged dev.
Update operations can omit fields referenced by custom validation rules without failing solely because those fields are absent. Rules still validate when relevant fields are provided or relation changes can affect a referenced foreign key.
This behavior applies to direct, bulk, upsert, and nested relation updates. Relation changes that clear a referenced foreign key continue to trigger validation.
Rules that reference fields through this are checked when those fields are updated. Creation-time validation remains unchanged.
… of its fields
The update data schema checked @@Validate rules against the update payload,
which holds only the fields the update changes. A field left out is ABSENT,
and `==` / `!=` treat ABSENT as null. So a rule such as
`useCase != null || modelName != null` rejected every update that left out
both fields, although the stored row satisfies it and the update cannot
change that.
- `addCustomValidation` takes `options.partial`: a rule is skipped for data
that sends none of the fields it references
- the ORM update data schema passes `partial: true`
A rule that references a field the update sends is checked as before.

Cover the single-field update case in the issue-2904 regression test.
The test sends the two referenced fields only as a pair. It never sends useCase alone or modelName alone while the other field is omitted. A guard that skips the rule when any referenced field is absent would pass every case in this file. That guard would accept { useCase: null }, which the rule rejects.

Add a regression assertion to the issue-2904 test that updating with useCase set

…n key or it reads `this.field`
Two gaps in the partial check, both found in review:
- A relation field in the update, such as `author: { disconnect: true }`,
changes the foreign key the rule reads (`authorId`). The relation field now
counts as sending its foreign keys, so the rule is still checked.
- `collectFieldRefs` did not collect `this.field`, so a rule written that way
had no references and was always skipped on update. It now collects the
first member when the receiver is `this`.

Exclude nested update from the foreign-key trigger for owning relations.
A nested author: { update: ... } on Post triggers authorId != null through the relation key author. The payload does not contain authorId, so the rule evaluates to false and rejects the update. Limit the relation-key trigger to relation operations that change the foreign key.

Keep relation connects out of the raw-payload foreign-key check, or validate the FK they set.
An update such as author: { connect: { id: 1 } } is checked against the raw payload. That payload has no authorId, so authorId != null evaluates to false and the valid connect is rejected. The same rejection happens before this PR.

Update the partialTriggers and evalExpression handling so a relation connect is
not rejected merely because its foreign key is absent from the raw payload;
recognize the connect as satisfying the check or validate the foreign-key value
it supplies. Preserve rejection when neither the payload nor a valid connect
provides the required foreign key.

…ts relation
A relation field in the update counted as sending its foreign keys whatever
it held. So `author: { update: { name: 'x' } }` triggered a rule on `authorId`.
The payload has no `authorId`, so the rule read it as null and rejected the
update, although a nested `update` writes to the related row only.
A relation field now counts only when it holds an operation other than
`update`.

Validate connect against the foreign key it sets.

Validate connect against the foreign key it sets.
A connect marks the relation's foreign keys as sent, so a rule that references them runs. The rule reads the raw payload, which lacks authorId. @@validate(authorId != null) then rejects a valid connect. Resolve the connected foreign key before the rule runs, or send authorId directly.

Update the relation-validation flow around relationChangesForeignKey so rules
referencing a relation’s foreign key see the connected foreign key value, not
just the raw payload. Resolve that value before validation or ensure the foreign
key is sent directly, while preserving existing connect handling.
Nested update payloads can change a referenced key without triggering @@Validate.
449-450: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Nested update payloads can change a referenced key without triggering @@validate.
A nested update that sets a referenced key on the related row does not trigger a rule that references the foreign key. For example, with @@validate(authorId != 2), a Post update with author: { update: { id: 2 } } skips the rule. relationChangesForeignKey treats a relation payload that contains only update as not changing a foreign key. The default onUpdate: cascade can then change Post.authorId on the owning row. The stored row may then violate the rule, where the database enforces the foreign key.
Making the nested update trigger the rule does not close this gap. The rule evaluates the partial payload, where authorId is absent, so authorId != 2 still passes. Enforcing the rule needs one of these changes: reject nested writes to referenced keys, or evaluate the rule against the post-update row.

Nested relation updates can change referenced keys without validating the owning
row’s resulting foreign key. Update relation handling around
relationChangesForeignKey so nested writes to referenced keys are either
rejected or validation evaluates the post-update owning row; do not merely make
update trigger validation against the partial payload, since it lacks the
resulting foreign key.
Skip disconnect: false when deciding whether a partial update triggers a rule.
relationChangesForeignKey treats { disconnect: false } as a foreign-key change. The ORM ignores that value, so the foreign key stays unchanged. The rule still runs without the foreign key in the payload. authorId != null then fails, and the no-op update is rejected.
