prepare: run each CTE or view a query reads more than once just once - #290
Stacked on #287. Merge that first; this PR's base is prepared-queries.
Why
DataFusion inlines a CTE or a view at every place a query reads it. A model whose layers each read the layer before more than once grows with every layer. The one-layer GPT in the ML demos plans its loss as 9,882 operators, which are repeats of only 87 distinct subplans. One 233-operator subtree appears 40 times, and its joins output 9.1 million rows per call. DataFusion's CommonSubexprEliminate merges repeated expressions within one node, but never repeated subplans.
How
src/share.rs (sqlparser 0.62, with its visitor feature): share(query, views, prefix).
It hoists the query's CTEs, and the views it reads, into numbered definitions.
It counts how often each definition is read, counting only reads from definitions that run.
It returns a step for each definition read at least twice, then the query itself, which reads those steps' tables. Every other definition is inlined, as a CTE, into the one place it's read. Each definition then runs exactly once per call.
It returns None, and the query is planned as written, for WITH RECURSIVE, a MATERIALIZED CTE, a subquery with CTEs of its own, a view with a column list, more than one statement, or SQL it can't parse.
Context.prepare (xarray_sql/sql.py):
It reads the views of the default catalog and schema from information_schema.views.
It plans each step once, and stores the step's rows in a table under a unique _xql_<uuid>_ name.
Each call runs the steps in order and writes their rows into those tables in place. When a step's rows can't be written in place, because the row count changes, a column has nulls or a column isn't numeric, it registers the table again and plans the later steps again.
Performance
The GPT demo's training step, on an Intel i7-8700, DataFusion 55.2.0, best of 3 rounds:
Prepared queries now reuse results from repeated CTE and view reads, reducing repeated planning and execution. Results are refreshed when their schema or row count changes.
Documentation
Updated the performance guide with prepared-query behavior, timing comparisons, and cases where queries are planned as written.
Prepared queries now split repeated CTE and view reads into intermediate steps. Each call executes those steps and refreshes their stored results. When a result cannot be updated in place, downstream statements are replanned. Tests compare prepared results with freshly planned results across changing inputs.

Summary
CTE and view sharing Cargo.toml, src/lib.rs, src/share.rs
Adds the sqlparser visitor dependency and a native share function. The function parses supported queries, expands supported views, and emits steps for definitions read more than once.
Prepared query step planning xarray_sql/sql.py
PreparedQuery uses the native helper and view definitions to create statements for intermediate steps and the final query.
Step execution and result refresh xarray_sql/sql.py, tests/test_prepare.py, docs/performance.md
PreparedQuery executes steps and refreshes stored results. It replans downstream statements when results cannot be updated in place. Tests compare prepared results with fresh plans, and the performance guide documents behavior and measurements.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 8c190
Repeated Context.prepare calls on queries with shared CTEs or views keep intermediate result sets registered in the context, so a long-running session can use extra memory. The behavior is bounded and does not affect query results, so the change is mergeable with a follow-up fix.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 8c190
Prepared queries now retain intermediate results in session tables without a corresponding release path. Failed refreshes can also leave downstream plans inconsistent with those tables. These changes create memory-retention and recovery risks in long-lived contexts, although no new privilege escalation or cross-tenant access path was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Generated intermediate tables outlive their PreparedQuery owner. Construction registers each completed step directly in the session catalog, but neither disposal nor failure while constructing a later step removes earlier registrations. Repeated preparation in a surviving Context can therefore accumulate intermediate data and memory even after callers discard the queries. The base retained a prepared plan but did not introduce these independent catalog registrations.
Medium · reliability · inferred: A failed multi-step refresh can leave a reusable PreparedQuery with stale downstream plans. The current table is replaced before later statements are successfully replanned and executed, and those statements are committed individually. If later work raises, there is no rollback or dirty-state marker. On a subsequent call, a compatible in-place write to the already-replaced table can bypass the replanning branch, leaving consumers bound to an earlier table generation. Normal successful replanning handles changing outputs, but does not establish recovery after partial failure.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new exposure is retained intermediate data and memory in a surviving session catalog. A caller able to repeatedly prepare sharing-eligible queries in that Context can accumulate registrations. Process-wide availability impact depends on workload and hosting; remote reachability, tenant sharing and resource quotas were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The inspected SQL-to-native-to-session path does not establish a new authority gain: the native function returns rewritten SQL, while execution remains in the existing session. This is bounded counterevidence against a new boundary bypass, not a complete security assessment of SQL execution or hosting.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — UUID-based names reduce accidental collisions between prepared queries, and external input replacement checks remain enforced. These are ownership and consistency controls; generated names are still ordinary session-catalog registrations, not demonstrated authorization boundaries.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The material resilience gaps concern lifecycle ownership and failure containment: catalog registrations survive their creator, and a partially completed refresh has no explicit invalid state requiring recovery. Concurrent-call guarantees remain unresolved and are not treated as a verified new vulnerability.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give generated registrations an explicit release owner, including cleanup after partial construction. Treat refresh as a generation transition: either stage and commit compatible tables and consumers together, or mark the query invalid before mutation and require a complete rebuild after failure. Specify serialized-use requirements or provide serialization if concurrent calls are intended.

I think instead of this, we should wait for a fix in datafusion, or depend on the duckdb extension. I want to do things the "correct" way, and this seems like the wrong separation of concerns.
DataFusion plans a CTE or view in full at every place a query reads it, so
a model whose layers each read the one before several times expands into a
tree many times the size of the model. Context.prepare now splits such a
query, with sqlparser in the native module, into a step for each CTE or view
read more than once, whose rows are stored as a table that the later steps
read, and writes each call's rows into it in place.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Deregister the stored step tables when the PreparedQuery is released or fails to construct.
_Stored.replace registers a record-batch table named _xql_<uuid>_<n> in the user's Context.
No code path deregisters that table.
The table holds a copy of every shared CTE or view result.
PreparedQuery.__call__ tells users to "prepare the query again" after a table is registered again. Each new prepare adds a new set of tables under a new UUID prefix. A long-running session that prepares again will keep many intermediate result sets in memory. The tables also show in information_schema.tables and SHOW TABLES.
There is a second path to the same leak. If _Statement(ctx, sql) or step() raises partway through __init__, the tables registered for the earlier steps also stay.
Use weakref.finalize to deregister every stored name. Register it before the steps run, so a failed __init__ also cleans up.

The finalizer keeps a strong reference to ctx. That is acceptable here, because PreparedQuery already keeps one through self._ctx.

🌀 Claude: Converted to a draft. Running a shared CTE once belongs in the engine, not in xarray-sql: DataFusion 56 plans a CTE written WITH … AS MATERIALIZED once, and DuckDB already computes a CTE read more than once a single time. This waits on DataFusion, or gives way to the DuckDB path. CodeRabbit's note on the step tables it leaves registered is moot until then.
