Add a timeout to API requests - #271
Conversation
load_info() called urlopen() without a timeout, and only handled errors when opening the URL. A connection that stalls while the response is read blocks the scraper, and with it the library scan, indefinitely. This happens for example behind a VPN exit node that drops some responses to requests sent with "Connection: close", which urllib always sends. Use a 15 second timeout, matching the TV show scraper, and treat timeouts and socket errors while reading the response like failures to reach the site: return the default or an error, so the scraper reports the failure instead of hanging. 75-76: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueBound the total response-read time as optional hardening.
urlopen(req, timeout=TIMEOUT)applies to individual blocking socket operations. It does not limit the total time spent inresponse.read(). A response that sends data before each idle timeout and never reaches EOF can therefore keep the read active indefinitely. This is a pre-existing edge case. The PR adds the first timeout and covers the fully idle stall described in issue
#266. Treat this as optional, low-effort hardening rather than a major issue. If a total deadline is required, read bounded chunks and apply the remaining monotonic-deadline duration to each blocking read.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

load_info()callsurlopen()without a timeout and only handles errors raised while opening the URL. If a connection stalls while the response is read, the scraper blocks forever, and the library scan blocks with it, stuck at 0%.This change:
urlopen(), matching the TV show scraper;tryblock; The existing error handling then shows a notification and logs a warning, and the scan continues.
I hit this behind a VPN exit node that loses part of the responses to requests sent with
Connection: close, which urllib always sends. About half the requests stalled. With the patch they fail after 15 seconds and the scan completes, and requests that don't stall are unaffected. The log attached to #266 shows the same thing: the last line from the scraper is its first
Calling URLfor the TMDb search, with no result and no error after it.Fixes #266
