First version of Feed Links, a new extension for phpBB 3.3.19+ and 4.0.

What it does

  • RSS 2.0 feeds at app.php/rss/... for every feed phpBB has as Atom: board, forum, topic, news, all forums, new topics, active topics. They run phpBB's own feed controller and convert its Atom output, so feed settings, permissions, item limits and the core.feed_modify_feed_row event apply to both formats.
  • Show feed links setting per forum (ACP → Forums → Edit forum): None, Atom, RSS, or Atom and RSS. Defaults to None.
  • The links show below the forum description on the board index, in subforum lists and on the forum page, worded as on phpBB.com: "Subscribe to the feed, available in Atom or RSS format." They only show when the feed works for the viewer (forum feeds on, forum not excluded, no forum password, viewer can read it).
  • RSS links in the page head for the forum and topic, plus an Add RSS discovery links setting (ACP → Feed settings) for the board-wide feeds.
  • phpBB's feed HTTP authentication also covers the RSS routes.

phpBB has no template event right after the forum description in forumlist_body.html, so the links are appended to FORUM_DESC for now. docs/events/forumlist_body_forum_desc_after.txt is the tracker request for that event.

Testing

Claude ran these checks:

  • Unit tests: 44 tests pass on phpBB 3.3.x (PHPUnit 9) and master (PHPUnit 10).
  • seed-forum test boards on phpBB 3.3 and 4.0: links on the index and forum page for Atom, RSS and both; hidden for guests on a staff forum, for categories and for an excluded forum; head links; saving the forum setting on edit and on a new forum; the ACP feed setting; disable, delete data and enable again.
  • All seven RSS feeds from both boards pass the W3C Feed Validation Service. The only warning is that the self link doesn't match, which is expected for feeds uploaded as text.
  • EPV on 3.3 and 4.0: no Fatal or Error findings.
  • php -l on PHP 7.4 and 8.4, and the template accessibility check.

Not covered on a live board: HTTP authentication, which phpBB only uses over HTTPS. A unit test runs phpBB's own HTTP authentication code for the RSS routes instead.

Screenshots were taken with the screenshots.py entry in phpbbmodders/phpbb-release-tools#35.

RSS 2.0 versions of every phpBB feed, served by phpBB's own feed
controller and converted from its Atom output, so feed settings,
permissions and events apply to both formats. Each forum gets a "Show
feed links" setting (none, Atom, RSS or both) for links below its
description on the board index and on the forum page, and RSS discovery
links in the page head. phpBB's feed HTTP authentication covers the RSS
routes too.

Supports phpBB 3.3.19+ and 4.0, PHP 7.4+.

phpBB 3.3's forum rows start the moderators line with <br />; after a
block element that left an empty line.

Each link gets the feed icon and a dotted underline, as on phpBB.com.
