fix(API): prevent MDX example import collisions - #245
The converter then generates raw imports for Chatbot.tsx and ChatbotDisplayMode.tsx. The previous import matcher did not remove the compound external import, leaving duplicate bindings in generated MDX and causing:
[@mdx-js/rollup] Could not parse import/exports with acorn
Identifier 'Chatbot' has already been declared
This does not change API schemas or endpoint contracts; it ensures the existing documentation content can be converted and indexed successfully.
What changed
Replace the overly broad import matcher with explicit handling for:
default imports
named and aliased named imports
combined default + named imports
multiline imports
type-only imports
Continue preserving relative imports and CSS imports.
Remove matching external imports before generating <LiveExample> raw imports.
Add focused regression coverage for the real Chatbot collision pattern and related import shapes.
Why this is intentionally narrow
This is a surgical conversion fix, not a general-purpose TypeScript/MDX import parser.
Known edge cases—such as namespace imports, which are intentionally preserved, and absolute imports inside fenced code blocks, which may still be rewritten—remain outside this change because they are not present in the failing consumer input. Supporting them would broaden scope and risk without unblocking the current API build.
Validation
npm run build:cli
npm test -- --runInBand cli/__tests__/convertToMDX.test.ts
36 tests passed
Focused ESLint check for changed files
Full patternfly-org consumer build under Node 22 / Yarn 4:
yarn ci:build:doc-core
passed using the patched local doc-core checkout
generated Chatbot MDX contains only the intended raw example imports
no duplicate Chatbot or ChatbotDisplayMode bindings remain
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Removed existing absolute, non-CSS imports—including TypeScript type imports—when converting content to MDX. Relative and CSS imports are preserved.
Improved handling of combined and aliased imports to prevent conflicts with generated example imports.

Walkthrough
The converter now removes supported absolute non-CSS imports with default, named, combined, or type-only bindings. Relative and CSS imports remain. Tests cover these cases and document current limitations.

Summary
Match and remove supported imports cli/convertToMDX.ts, cli/__tests__/convertToMDX.test.ts
The import matcher now handles default, named, combined, and optional type-only bindings. Tests cover retained relative and CSS imports, multiline imports, generated example imports, and documented limitations.
CRLF documentation can still fail to build because of duplicate imports, while CSS query imports can lose bindings they use. Fix both cases before merging.

* cli/convertToMDX, replace the broad import matcher with explicit handling for absolute non-CSS default, named, compound, multiline, and type-only imports before generating LiveExample raw imports
* cli/convertToMDX, preserve relative and CSS imports so local assets and stylesheet imports remain available to MDX
* cli/__tests__/convertToMDX, add import-shape coverage for default, named, aliased, compound, multiline, type-only, relative, and CSS imports
* cli/__tests__/convertToMDX, add the Chatbot regression case proving compound imports are removed before Chatbot and ChatbotDisplayMode raw-example imports are generated
* tests, document current fenced-code and namespace-import limitations as intentional scope boundaries for this surgical fix

- Line 88: Update the absoluteNonCssModule pattern to exclude CSS imports whose
.css extension is followed by an optional query suffix, such as ?url or ?inline,
so the converter preserves their bindings. Add a test covering a bound absolute
CSS import with a query suffix.
- Line 94: Update the import-matching regular expression used by
handleTsExamples to accept an optional carriage return before the newline, and
cover the CRLF collision case where a compound external import duplicates
bindings in generated raw imports.
