What and why

Fixes #424. Fixes every blocker the 1.0.0 test campaign found, and adds the campaign's end-to-end scripts so later releases keep the same checks.

Blockers fixed

Install and build

  • Angular CLI builds. Angular CLI apps couldn't build with the overlay. A browser chunk imported node:module, so ng build and ng serve failed for every Angular CLI setup. Browser and Node entries are now built separately (tsdown.config.ts, build/entries.ts).
  • Angular 20 SSR. The Express hub broke the Angular 20 SSR build with a duplicate createRequire. The hub is now loaded from the package at runtime (hub-entry.ts), and there's a clear message when Node is too old.
  • pnpm installs. The Express hub failed under pnpm because the transitive @devframes/agentic wasn't hoisted. Loading the hub from the package fixes this too.

Agent tools

  • Missing arguments. inspect-signals threw a raw TypeError when selector was missing.
  • Argument checks. Tool arguments are now checked against each tool's inputSchema in one place (rpc/tool-input.ts). Before this, a wrong type crashed 43 calls, and page: <number> silently fell back to another tab. Refusals now return isError: true.

Redaction

  • Secrets in prose. A secret key=value inside a sentence is now masked (text-redact.ts), and strong secret names like password are masked even when the value is a plain word.
  • Masked form fields. The Components inspector now respects masked form fields: type="password", autocomplete="one-time-code" and data-pangular="mask".
  • NgRx arguments. NgRx signal store method arguments that carry a secret are masked, including in async methods that write the secret after an await.

Connection

  • Extension pairing. The Chrome extension can now enter the one-time code, and each panel keeps its token to its own server.
  • Extension reloads. The extension panel no longer gets stuck after a reload.
  • Server restarts. After a server restart, the overlay reconnects instead of logging DevframeConnectionError every 5 s. When the server revokes the page, it goes quiet with one warning.

Smaller fixes from the campaign

  • Docs: list_changed client support, the Node and npm versions, allowedHosts, and the entry points table.
  • Request gate: the standalone pangular dev server now has a gate for HTTP requests. Android emulator host aliases are answered from loopback.
  • Agent writes: values written by agents are no longer broadcast to every client.
  • Express hub: no more 404s from it.
  • Idle traffic: an idle tab sends one small page-heartbeat every 10 s instead of resending every collector's report (overlay: idle tabs resend full payloads on every keepalive #424).
  • NgRx performance: NgRx store updates no longer slow down with the store's size.
  • Panel: the Routes tab sticking to a dead page, the server-down states, the flash of an empty state, and the store header text.

New release checks

Script What it checks
pnpm e2e:install Installs the packed tarball from a local registry into fresh Angular CLI, Analog and standalone CLI apps, builds them, starts them and opens the panel
pnpm e2e:mcp Calls every agent tool through a real MCP client with valid, missing and wrong arguments
pnpm e2e:security Plants secrets wherever a collector reads and checks that none reaches the panel, agents or reports, and runs the access checks
pnpm e2e:panel Opens every panel view in both themes and at a narrow width with axe
pnpm e2e:resilience Multi-tab, reload, server restart and stress

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check (commit messages follow the guidelines)
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck (includes the ngc template checks)
  • pnpm test:devtools (3,396 tests) and pnpm test:panel (794 tests)
  • pnpm skills:check
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed
  • Checked in the browser with axe (pnpm test:axe and pnpm e2e:panel)

End-to-end results on this branch:

Check Result
pnpm e2e:mcp 691 calls, 0 failures, 49/49 write checks (1 known warning: MCP SDK 1.x clients get no list_changed, as documented)
pnpm e2e:security 0 leaks, 0 of 99 access checks failed, production checks pass
pnpm e2e:install Angular CLI on npm, pnpm, yarn and bun, Angular 20.0, 20.3, 21 and 22, SSR, ng serve and client-only, Analog, the standalone CLI and the package audit all pass
pnpm e2e:panel 96 views on the SSR demo and 100 on Analog with the one-time code, 0 problems
pnpm e2e:resilience multi-tab 32/32, lifecycle 16/16 (restart without reload), soak passes; expiry and stress fail only on #422 and #423

Performance on the SSR demo, with the overlay against without it:

Metric Result
Overlay script about 153 KB minified and gzipped
Time to stable +4 ms
Change detection per cycle +6%
Heap at load +2.9 MB
NgRx store update at 500 items about +0.6 ms; it was +2.6 ms and grew with the store before perf(store)
Idle tab 6 frames and about 1 KB per minute; it was 107 frames and 129 KB before perf(overlay)

Screenshots

No visual redesign. The panel changes are states and connection behaviour.

Notes for reviewers

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added one-time-code pairing for extension panels, with tokens saved per server for future connections.
    • Panels and overlays now recover from disconnects and server restarts, while preserving page data.
    • Added regular page heartbeats to keep live reports current and detect when a server has lost page data.
    • Improved loading and connection status messages across inspectors.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Expanded masking of sensitive values in forms, component data, state changes, HTTP payloads, and logs.
    • Improved extension handling of unsupported, unresponsive, and temporarily unreadable pages.
    • Restricted page-targeted actions to the connection that owns the page.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, security, connection, and reporting guidance.

e2e:install packs the package and installs it from a local registry into
fresh Angular CLI (SSR, serve, client-only), Analog and CLI setups across
npm, pnpm, yarn and bun and chosen Angular versions, wires each setup as
the docs say, then checks the panel connects to a live page. It also
audits every published entry point and its types. The local registry
helpers move to scripts/lib, and verify-publish now handles Angular 22.2's
one-line bootstrapApplication.

e2e:mcp drives the demo app and calls every agent tool over HTTP and
stdio with valid, missing, wrong-typed and unknown-page arguments, reads
every resource and prompt, checks list_changed, the readOnly and hiding
variants, and that each write tool changes the app.

e2e:security plants canary secrets everywhere a collector reads, greps
every panel, MCP, WebMCP, report and log channel for them, probes
write-back into secret fields, and checks the hub's token, origin and
host gates and production builds.
Release tests planted canary secrets everywhere the collectors read and
found these leaks:

- key=value and key: value pairs inside a sentence, such as an error
message, were not masked. Pairs now match wherever a word starts, with
quoted and JSON-ish forms, while ordinary prose stays readable. WebMCP
answers now use the same text rules.
- The Components inspector ignored the element-level form masks
  (data-pangular="mask", credential autocomplete, type=password). Values
bound to masked controls, and the forms collector's secret values, are
now masked in component inputs, properties and value levels.
- NgRx signal store method arguments were logged in clear. A call that
writes a secret-named key masks all its arguments, secret-named
parameters are masked, and secret state values are cut from the rest.
- A harmless field holding a secret's earlier value showed in clear once
the secret changed. Recent secret values are kept masked.
- Agent form-action and component-edit values were broadcast to every
client. They now go only to the connection that owns the page.
- TransferState was sent from the page unredacted. It is sanitized on the
page, including secret-looking custom state keys.
- pangular dev had no HTTP request gate. It now applies the hub's origin
and host checks and honors --allowed-origin.

e2e:security reports no leaks and no failed access checks.
…ackage

The published overlay could not be bundled by the Angular CLI: one
tsdown build with platform node let a chunk shared with server code put
a bare import "node:module" into the overlay's graph, so ng build and
ng serve failed for every Angular CLI app. Browser and Node entries are
now two builds that never share a chunk, and both builds fail when a
browser entry reaches a Node builtin or the hub loader reaches a package.

The Express hub broke the SSR build on Angular 20, whose server banner
declares createRequire without an alias next to the same binding in
devframe and the hub, and it failed under pnpm because devframe resolved
its @devframes/agentic peer from the app's server bundle. The ./hub
entry is now a small loader that imports no package and loads the hub
from node_modules, so neither binding enters the app bundle and devframe
resolves its peer from its own folder. The hub needs Node.js 22.12 or
20.19, which every Angular CLI from 20 already requires.

The overlay probes /__devframes/pangular/ first, which removes the 404s
it logged under the Express hub. publishConfig gains main and types for
moduleResolution node10. The docs cover the Node requirements, the
allowedHosts setting for the built Angular 22.2 server, Yarn 1 and the
missing entry points.
A cold build of the package failed with TS2883, the inferred type of
proxyAuth cannot be named. The Nx build cache had hidden it.
Release tests called every tool with wrong-typed, missing and unknown
arguments. Arguments were never checked against inputSchema, so 43 calls
crashed with raw TypeErrors, inspect-signals threw without a selector,
and a numeric page was silently dropped so 34 tools acted on the latest
tab or every tab.

Every tool's arguments are now checked against its inputSchema before
the handler runs, with an answer that names each bad argument and what
it takes. page and pageId must be strings and never fall back to another
tab. Refusals (missing arguments, unknown pages, forms or actions, blocked
or read-only actions) now come back with isError, and bad enum values are
rejected instead of ignored.

Also clearer messages for form-action, fill-form, open-in-panel, navigate
and pages without forms; audit refuses axe under agent.readOnly;
clear-recordings offers only enabled targets and agrees with
agentToolOffered. The docs say list_changed reaches only clients that
use subscriptions/listen, and that MCP writes are tagged devtools in
form-history.

e2e:mcp makes 691 calls with no failures.
e2e:panel walks every panel tab and sub-view in dark and light at 1280
and 360 pixels with axe, an overflow check and a page-error check, and
can read the one-time code from the dev server log.

e2e:resilience checks several tabs and a second app on one hub, page
expiry, reloads and server restarts, a long session's caps and memory,
and a stress app with thousands of components, defer blocks, store
entities and form fields.
…ion panel

After a dev server restart the browser overlay never reported again
until the page was reloaded, and an uncaught forms push sent a
DevframeConnectionError to the app's ErrorHandler every few seconds. The
overlay now follows the live client through a link that reconnects with
backoff, re-reads the connection file, waits for trust, re-registers its
functions and resends every report under the same page id. The forms
push catches its rejection.

The Chrome extension never connected when the one-time code was on, the
Vite plugin default: its framed panel could not run devframe's prompt.
The panel now shows a code form when the server refuses it and keeps one
token per server origin. The extension origin still never replaces the
code. The extension's page reads time out and retry, tell a failed read
from a non-http page, hint when the page waits on the code prompt, and
always offer Try again, so reloads no longer leave the panel stuck.

The panel also shows Connecting until the client is trusted and the
server-down state with Retry on every tab, shows loading instead of a
false empty state before the first answer, asks for the code when opened
directly, keeps Routes on the picked page, says Live in the Store header
for pages without stores, and announces the final change detection
count.
- Accept null for required tool arguments whose schema allows any value.
- Answer the Android emulator host aliases from loopback.
- Keep each extension panel's auth token to its own server.
- Scan form controls once per push instead of once per open level.
- Stop retiring the prefixes of a secret being typed as old secrets.
- Mask strong secret names in prose even when the value is a plain word.
- Mask the args of async NgRx methods that write a secret after an await.
- Say Node is too old when getBuiltinModule is missing.
- Take the overlay offline when the server revokes its trust.
With the overlay on, each NgRx signal store update cost about 3 ms at
500 items against 0.4 ms without it, and grew with the state. Every
update re-classified every key, re-read the page config and re-ran the
text redaction on both slices. Key answers and masked texts are now
cached per redaction config, the previous slice is reused as the next
update's before, and the secret check walks both sides together. The
added cost is about 0.6 ms per update and stays flat as the store grows.
An idle tab sent about 107 frames and 129 KB a minute, because every
collector kept its page alive on the server by resending its full report
or pinging every 5 to 8 seconds. The overlay now sends one small
page-heartbeat every 10 seconds, which keeps the page alive in every
store and replaces the page-interest poll. Collectors send only when
their data changes, and resend everything when the server no longer
knows the page. An idle tab now sends 6 frames and about 1 KB a minute.

Refs #424
With the page heartbeat in place, the router and forms answers called a
live idle page stale, plugin ages kept growing, a beat could answer
known after the stores dropped a background page, and a failed NgRx,
pipes or Analog push was never sent again while its data stayed the
same. The heartbeat now refreshes the router and forms report times and
plugin ages, the sweep expires stores before beats with one clock, and
those collectors forget the last sent value when a push fails.
The create-analog template sets a $vitest override that npm 10 cannot resolve, so its own npm install fails before the package is added. pnpm installs it, and pnpm is the default tab in the Analog docs.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds page heartbeats, reconnect and pairing flows, scoped authentication tokens, redaction coverage, structured tool validation, hub packaging checks, extension retry handling, inspector loading states, and end-to-end test harnesses.

Changes: Inspector platform changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Panel authentication and reconnection
app/src/app.ts, app/src/auth-token.ts, app/src/ui/auth-code.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay*.ts
Panels now wait for trusted clients, pair with one-time codes, scope stored tokens by server origin, and reconnect after dropped connections.
Page heartbeat and report retention
packages/devtools/src/page-heartbeat.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/page-*.ts
Pages send heartbeats, servers refresh report timestamps, and unchanged reports retry after page loss or failed delivery.
Redaction and sensitive-value handling
packages/devtools/src/forms*.ts, packages/devtools/src/component*.ts, packages/devtools/src/ngrx*.ts, packages/devtools/src/text-redact.ts
Sensitive form, component, HTTP, text, and NgRx values remain masked across updates, retained values, and asynchronous writes.
Tool validation and refusal contracts
packages/devtools/src/rpc/tool-input.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/refusal.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts
Tool arguments are validated against schemas, and invalid arguments and refusal results use structured error responses.
Hub packaging and build validation
packages/devtools/src/hub*.ts, packages/devtools/build/entries.ts, packages/devtools/tsdown.config.ts
The package adds lazy hub loading, disabled-hub behavior, separate browser and Node builds, and entry-graph validation.
Extension and inspector states
extension/panel-bridge.js, app/src/pages/*.ts
Page evaluation retries transient failures, reports blocked pages, and inspector views distinguish loading from empty or disconnected states.
Validation suites and documentation
e2e/security/*, scripts/e2e-*.mjs, apps/docs/*, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/*
Tests, security fixtures, resilience checks, installation checks, and documentation cover the changed flows.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to abddc

No actionable merge-blocking issue remains in the reviewed changes; the previously flagged Router behavior is intentional, and proxy-origin access is handled.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to abddc

The inspected changes strengthen request filtering and tool validation without demonstrating broader caller authority. Risk is low, but authentication integration and sensitive-data recovery behavior are not fully established by the available evidence.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected authority surface is the configured devtools server and its registered tools and connected pages. An explicitly network-bound CLI admits originless native peers through the outer gate, so downstream authentication remains important; the outer gate alone is not an authenticated-client boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Request-controlled Host, Origin, and fetch-site metadata are checked alongside transport peer identity. Refused CLI requests return a 403 response instead of continuing. The shared Node middleware also terminates refused HTTP requests and destroys refused upgrade sockets.
  • observed — Browser tool calls require ownership of the calling page, select from the browser-visible tool list, and remove caller-supplied page aliases before injecting the calling page ID. Schema validation supplements these existing authority checks rather than replacing them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The request gate does not introduce session or pairing ownership. Its warning reporter keeps a bounded, per-application deduplication set, while each authorization decision is evaluated from the request and policy. Repetition does not consume an authorization grant or create a new cleanup transition in this layer.

Explanation

The title is concise and accurately describes the pull request’s main purpose: fixing issues found during the 1.0.0 test campaign. It also covers the added release-validation checks without unnecessary detail.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#424] requires a cheap page keepalive that carries only the pageId, sends full reports only after data changes or when the server loses the page, and includes automated coverage. The implementation adds createPageHeartbeat with a 10-second page-heartbeat, changes collectors to suppress unchanged reports, resends after known: false or a failed push, and adds heartbeat and collector tests such as overlay-heartbeat.test.ts, page-heartbeat.test.ts, and page-heartbeat-server.test.ts. The PR summary also reports reduced idle traffic and passing resilience checks.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes substantial changes unrelated to issue [#424]. Examples include Angular and Node build entry separation, hub loading and SSR support, MCP argument validation, broad secret redaction, extension authentication and reload handling, CLI request gating, panel state changes, and five release-check scripts. These changes may address other findings, but no directly linked issue establishes them as scope for this assessment.

Resolution

Split unrelated fixes and release checks into separate pull requests, or link the corresponding active issues to this pull request. Keep the implementation and supporting tests and documentation for [#424] in this scope.

packages/devtools/src/serialize.ts: 1

145-146: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Sort the masked values once per serialize call, not once per string.

redactMessage copies, filters and sorts secrets each time it runs. Line 146 calls it for every string leaf the serializer visits. secrets comes from maskedFormValues, which merges the retained seen values with formSecretValues() for every form. That set can hold hundreds of values. With a budget of up to 5000 nodes per value level, each push repeats the same sort many times.

Prepare the longest-first list once in serialize and replace substrings from that list directly.

♻️ Proposed refactor
-      if (secrets?.has(v)) return REDACTED;
-      const text = secrets ? redactMessage(redactText(head(v)), secrets) : redactText(head(v));
+      if (secrets?.has(v)) return REDACTED;
+      let text = redactText(head(v));
+      if (longestFirst) for (const secret of longestFirst) text = text.split(secret).join(REDACTED);

Next to line 120:

const longestFirst = secrets
  ? [...secrets].filter((s) => s.length >= 3).sort((a, b) => b.length - a.length)
  : null;

redactText already masks JWTs, bearer tokens and credentials, so the result is the same as before.

sent. Apply this in `deliver`, after accumulated reports are merged, so secrets
learned after `recordFormEvent` still cannot reach the server or agent resource.

Review comments at @packages/devtools/src/rpc/tool-input.ts:
- Around line 229-230: Update the unknown-key handling in checkToolArgs to
validate each root-level value against schema-valued additionalProperties,
reusing the validation behavior from problemsOf where appropriate; ensure null
values are validated too, while preserving the existing rejection for
additionalProperties: false.

Review comments at @scripts/e2e-install.mjs:
- Around line 204-221: Update pmEnv to set YARN_NPM_REGISTRY_SERVER to REGISTRY
and YARN_UNSAFE_HTTP_WHITELIST to localhost, so Yarn 2 and later use the local
registry and allow its plain-HTTP host.

Nitpick comments:
Review comments at @packages/devtools/src/serialize.ts:
- Around line 145-146: In `serialize`, prepare the secrets list once per call,
filtering out values shorter than three characters and sorting the remainder
longest-first. Replace the per-string `redactMessage` call with direct
replacement using that prepared list, while preserving the existing exact-value
check and `redactText` processing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fall back when the inspected page has no router report.

If hostPageId names a page absent from pages, pickPage still returns that ID. This new lookup then returns null, even when another page has router state. The Router tab shows its no-page message instead of that page's report. Select a reported page when the host ID has no match.

Review comment at @app/src/pages/live-route.ts at line 299:
Update the computed page lookup in LiveRoute so when this.pageId() does not
match any entry in this.pages(), it selects a page with router state rather than
returning null; preserve the matching-page behavior.

A form event recorded before a field became a secret kept that value in
clear in every later report. Events are now masked again with the
current secrets after each form read. The panel no longer starts a
second client while one still waits for the server, the CLI gate
accepts the app origin named by --proxy-origin, unlisted tool arguments
are checked against a schema-valued additionalProperties, Yarn 2 and
later use the local registry in the install check, and serialize sorts
the masked values once per call. The docs fix the 4 second note and the
NgRx keyword link.
