Description

Working on direct bundle installation, we discovered locations where fallback and deprecation make assumptions that the bundle source is a catalog. This PR establishes a source contract that explicitly sets and maintains continuity of the source across the lifecycle of the ClusterExtension, and segregates deprecation evidence into optional, type-asserted interfaces.

Source contract

controllers.Resolver (renamed from BundleSource) is the mandatory behavior of an object that can resolve a bundle from a source:

  • ValidateSource — fail-closed payload validation before rollout continuation, resolution, or backend calls
  • Resolve — selects the bundle; called by the shared steps only at steady state (no rollout in progress)
  • RecoverFromResolutionError — invoked only when Resolve fails; may authorize maintaining the installed bundle via the shared maintainInstalled helper (the catalog-existence gate stays in CatalogSource)
  • CanMaintainWithoutContent — authorizes maintenance when bundle content cannot be pulled
  • ReconcileOnCatalogChange — catalog-event routing policy

Deprecation evidence is deliberately not part of the contract. resolve.PackageDeprecationSource, ChannelDeprecationSource, and BundleDeprecationSource are optional interfaces (implemented by resolve.CatalogResolver and CatalogSource) that the reconcile step discovers via type assertions on every reconcile. A source implementing none of them is reported exactly like a source whose evaluation found no deprecations; a failed query is the only unknown path. A future direct source implements only Resolver and inherits that behavior structurally.

Catalog selection order, catalog-deletion fallback semantics, and deprecation-driven ordering inside catalog resolution are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Bundle resolution now supports source-specific behavior, including validation, recovery, and maintenance policies.
    • Deprecation status now reflects package, channel, and installed-bundle information separately, and reports unknown when evidence cannot be determined.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Catalog changes now trigger reconciliation only for extensions whose sources request it.
    • Existing installations can continue to be maintained when bundle content cannot be pulled and the source permits it.
    • Catalog resolution failures can fall back to the installed bundle when no matching catalogs are available.

Walkthrough

The reconciler now selects a source by extension source type and delegates resolution, recovery, maintenance, deprecation reporting, and Catalog-event policy to that source. Catalog deprecation data is queried separately from bundle resolution and reported through package, channel, and bundle conditions.

Changes: Source-driven bundle reconciliation

The resolver contract now returns bundle and version results without deprecation data. Optional interfaces provide separate deprecation queries. CatalogSource implements source validation, resolution, recovery, maintenance checks, and Catalog lookup.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4d920

The change moves bundle resolution and deprecation reporting behind per-source implementations. The remaining concerns are extra catalog lookups on each reconcile and a test fake that does not cover known deprecation status during rollout. Neither is likely to cause user-facing failures, so the change can merge with follow-up.

The description explains the motivation (direct bundle installation exposed catalog-only assumptions in fallback and deprecation), and it describes the new source contract and the optional deprecation interfaces. It also states that catalog selection order and fallback semantics are unchanged. The template's Description section is filled with substantive content. The Reviewer Checklist is copied from the template with every item unchecked, and no related GitHub issue is linked. The title prefix check is not visible in the description body. In my head, I was thinking an even larger refactor. There are basically 4 primitives that our source needs to implement:

  1. Given a ClusterExtension and possibly an installed bundle, what bundle should be installed/upgraded to?
  2. Given revision states, what is the deprecation information we can discover about installed and rollout-in-progress bundles? (if applicable)
  3. Given a ClusterExtension, what is the deprecation information we can discover about the desired package? (if applicable)
  4. Given a ClusterExtension, what is the deprecation information we can discover about the desired channels? (if applicable)

And we would engage these primitives at different times:

  1. Only when we're at a steady state (no rollouts currently in progress)
  2. Every reconcile, when the source implements extended interface with method GetBundleDeprecation.
  3. Every reconcile, when the source implements extended interface with method GetPackageDeprecation.
  4. Every reconcile, when the source implements extended interface with method GetChannelDeprecations.

That design would mean that we'd have something like:

type Resolver interface {
   Resolve(ctx context.Context, ext ocv1.ClusterExtension, installedBundle *BundleMetadata) (*ResolutionResult, error)
}

type PackageDeprecationSource {
  GetPackageDeprecation(ctx context.Context, packageName string) (*PackageDeprecation, error)
}

type ChannelDeprecationSource {
  GetChannelDeprecations(ctx context.Context, packageName string, channels []string) (*ChannelDeprecations, error)
}

type BundleDeprecationSource {
  GetBundleDeprecations(ctx context.Context, bundles ...BundleMetadata) (*BundleDeprecations, error)
}

Then we'd:

  • only ever call Resolve when all the prerequisites are met (i.e. don't rely on the resolver itself to understand its own preconditions and fallbacks.
  • Use type assertions for all the deprecation function calls (DBISource would only implement Resolver, CatalogSource` would implement all 4).

Split the mandatory source contract so deprecation becomes an optional,
type-asserted capability instead of a required method with a
sentinel-encoded knownness flag, following the review direction on this PR:

- Rename the source contract to Resolver (from BundleSource) and the catalog
  implementation to CatalogSource. The mandatory surface is now:
  ValidateSource (fail-closed payload validation before rollout continuation
  and resolution), Resolve (steady-state only), RecoverFromResolutionError
  (invoked by the shared steps only when Resolve fails), CanMaintainWithoutContent,
  and ReconcileOnCatalogChange. The installed-bundle fallback action is the
  shared maintainInstalled helper; the catalog-specific existence gate stays
  in CatalogSource.
- Slim resolve.Resolver: deprecation leaves the Resolve return value.
  Evidence is queried through new optional interfaces,
  resolve.PackageDeprecationSource, ChannelDeprecationSource, and
  BundleDeprecationSource, implemented by resolve.CatalogResolver and
  delegated by CatalogSource.
- The shared ResolveBundle step owns engagement: validate the source payload,
  continue the first rolling revision without consulting resolution, call
  Resolve only at steady state, engage recovery only on failure, and collect
  deprecation evidence on every reconcile via type assertions.
- A source that implements none of the deprecation interfaces manifests
  exactly like a source whose evaluation found no deprecations, so the
  DeprecationKnown/hasCatalogData flag is gone; a failed query from a capable
  source is the only unknown-evidence path. Evidence now also populates
  during rollouts. Deprecation ordering inside catalog resolution
  (ByDeprecationFunc) is unchanged.

Direct sources (a later DBI PR) implement only Resolver and inherit this
behavior structurally instead of answering catalog questions.

Model deprecation evidence independently of resolution.

In the Boxcutter test, the fake returns Unknown because resolution has not run. The production catalog query can return known evidence during rollout, so this test does not cover known deprecation status when apply fails.

Configure the fake’s evidence separately and assert the known, non-deprecated conditions in this test. Keep explicit unavailable-evidence cases for tests that need them.

Reuse the catalog package lookup within a reconcile.

A successful steady-state Helm reconcile can select the package seven times: once for resolution and three times for each deprecation refresh. Each lookup reloads and parses cached package data. Separate lookups can also observe different catalog states.

Reuse the catalog package lookup per reconcile, while preserving the optional source interfaces and evaluating deprecation for the newly installed bundle after rollout.

Replying to #3095 (comment):

Implemented in d39e72c — the sketch made the split much cleaner, thank you.

Mandatory contract (controllers.Resolver, renamed from BundleSource): Resolve is now the pure pick-a-bundle primitive. The shared steps own engagement: they validate the source payload, continue RollingOut[0] without consulting resolution, and call Resolve only at steady state. RecoverFromResolutionError is a separate method the caller invokes only when Resolve fails — the ultimate installed-bundle fallback is a shared maintainInstalled helper, while the catalog-existence check stays inside CatalogSource.

Optional evidence: resolve.Resolver no longer returns deprecation. resolve.CatalogResolver implements GetPackageDeprecation/GetChannelDeprecations/GetBundleDeprecations, and CatalogSource satisfies the interfaces by delegation, so the type assertions in the reconcile step find them. A DBI source implementing only Resolver structurally inherits the "no deprecations" manifestation — the DeprecationKnown/hasCatalogData flag is deleted entirely: capability absence is reported exactly like an evaluated catalog with no deprecation entries, and a failed query is the only unknown path. The queries also run during rollouts now, so conditions populate instead of going Unknown.

Two deliberate deviations from the sketch, both noted in the commit message:

  • The queries take the ClusterExtension rather than pre-extracted packageName/channels strings (and GetBundleDeprecations takes ext alongside the bundles, since the FBC lookup is by package). This keeps shared reconciliation from reading spec.source.catalog.
  • ValidateSource is a mandatory method so malformed payloads fail closed even while a rollout is in progress — otherwise the steady-state gate would let a rolling extension with a nil catalog payload continue silently.

One open question: RecoverFromResolutionError is a mandatory method on the source contract rather than an optional assertion — we're keeping type assertions strictly for evidence, never control flow. Does that boundary match what you had in mind, or would you push the existence-check policy into the controller as well?

Upstream operator-framework#3080 moved operator-registry to the /v2 module path after this
branch's base, so PR CI (which builds a merge with current main) could not
compile the PR-owned files that still imported the v1 path. This merges
current main (77754d8) and migrates catalog_source.go and
clusterextension_source_test.go to
