decodeRelease streams the chunk data into the gzip and JSON decoders through an io.Pipe, but it never closes the read side of the pipe. If decoding stops before the writer goroutine has written all of the chunk data, that goroutine blocks on pw.Write forever and keeps the secret data in memory. This happens when the gzip header is invalid or the JSON payload can't be decoded, for example when a chunk is corrupt or truncated.
Each failed Get, List, or Query leaks one goroutine. An operator that keeps reconciling a release with a corrupt index or chunk secret leaks a goroutine on every attempt.
Changes
Close the pipe reader with defer pr.Close() when decodeRelease returns. Any pending write then fails with io.ErrClosedPipe and the goroutine exits.
Add a test that creates an index secret with invalid chunk data, calls Get several times, and checks that no decodeRelease writer goroutines remain.
Successful decodes aren't affected. A probe that ran 20 successful Get calls for each of several release sizes showed no change in the goroutine count before or after the fix.
Testing
go test -race ./pkg/storage/ with envtest assets for Kubernetes 1.35.x:
Without the fix: 25 passed, 1 failed (Expected <int>: 5 to be zero-valued).
With the fix: 26 passed. The full go test -race ./... also passes.
Improved cleanup when reading malformed chunked data. If decoding stops before all data is read, the read stream is closed so background processing can stop instead of remaining blocked. Repeated attempts to read invalid compressed indexes are less likely to leave lingering tasks, helping storage operations release resources reliably.
decodeRelease streams chunk data to the gzip and JSON decoders through an
io.Pipe, but never closes the read side. If decoding fails before all of
the chunk data is read, for example because of a corrupt or truncated
chunk, the writer goroutine blocks on pw.Write forever and keeps the
secret data in memory. Each failed Get, List or Query leaks one goroutine,
so an operator that repeatedly reconciles such a release grows without
bound.
Close the pipe reader when decodeRelease returns so the pending write
fails and the goroutine exits.
decodeRelease now closes the pipe reader when decoding returns. A regression test repeats failed Get calls with malformed chunk data and checks that the goroutine count does not increase.

decodeRelease defers closing the pipe reader. The test checks the goroutine count after five failed Get calls with malformed chunk data.
This change stops goroutine leaks when a chunked release fails to decode. In a rare case, a stalled Kubernetes secret request can still keep the writer goroutine alive, so adding request cancellation is a worthwhile follow-up but should not block the merge.

[#572] decodeRelease defers closing the pipe reader. This unblocks the writer when decoding fails. Get, List, and Query use decodeRelease. The regression test repeats Get with oversized invalid chunk data, checks the gzip-reader errors, and compares goroutine counts. This is a nice way to make sure the fix worked, but I'm afraid it will be fragile. A change to the way stack is formatted, or changing the name of the type or decodeRelease name or structure will invalidate this count, and silently always return 0, rendering the test useless.
I cannot think of a better way to do this, though. So we could either keep it and accept the above, or drop the test before merging given it's fulfilled its primary purpose.

Agreed. In 7d52c33 the test compares runtime.NumGoroutine() before the five failed Get calls with the count afterwards, so it no longer depends on stack formatting or names. If the fix regresses, the five writer goroutines stay blocked and the count stays above the baseline: removing pr.Close() makes the test fail. With the fix, it passed 25 of 25 runs with -race.
Count all goroutines with runtime.NumGoroutine, so the leak test does
not depend on the stack trace format or on function names. Move the
deferred pr.Close next to the gzip reader that consumes pr.

If the first chunk has an invalid gzip header, the writer can enter an extra-chunk Get before decoding fails. A stalled request can retain the writer goroutine after the decoder returns. Closing the pipe does not cancel the request.
Use a derived context for chunk requests and cancel it when decoding returns. Add a test with a cancellation-aware SecretInterface that blocks the extra-chunk Get.
