Summary

  • Move kind and yq from bingo to go tool directives in go.mod.
  • Pin openapi-gen in tools/openapi/go.mod and run it with go tool -modfile so generated schema output stays stable.
  • Configure Dependabot to check /tools/openapi weekly with the root Go module's dependency groups.
  • Run the pinned tools from the Makefile and remove .bingo.
  • Force tool execution on the host platform during cross-builds.

Why openapi-gen has a separate module

The root module requires k8s.io/kube-openapi from July 2026 for the API library, while the checked-in schemas were generated by the January 2026 version. Go resolves one version of this module per module graph. A root tool directive would therefore run the July generator and change schema defaults. Pinning January in the root module would also downgrade the library's Kubernetes dependencies. tools/openapi/go.mod lets go tool run the original generator version.

Validation

  • make manifests generate
  • GOOS=windows make generate-openapi
  • go test ./...

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated the project’s build tooling to use Go’s tool management and Makefile commands. The OpenAPI generator continues to use a separately pinned version.
    • Added weekly dependency update coverage for the OpenAPI tooling module.
  • Documentation
    • Updated tool management guidance and documented the OpenAPI generator’s version and usage.

Walkthrough

The repository replaces Bingo-managed development tools with Go tool declarations and Makefile go tool invocations. It adds a separate module for openapi-gen, updates generated-file headers and tool-management documentation, and removes the remaining .bingo configuration.

Changes: Go tool management migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tool declarations and dependencies
go.mod, tools/openapi/go.mod, .bingo/kind.mod, .bingo/openapi-gen.mod, .bingo/yq.mod, .github/dependabot.yml
The root module declares yq, controller-gen, and kind as tools. A new module declares openapi-gen and its dependencies. Dependabot adds weekly updates for that module, and the corresponding Bingo tool module files are removed.
Makefile tool invocation
Makefile, AGENTS.md, tools/openapi/README.md, pkg/lib/version/zz_generated.model_name.go, pkg/operators/v1alpha1/zz_generated.model_name.go
The Makefile uses go tool for the tools and removes their target prerequisites. Documentation describes the tool setup and OpenAPI module version. Generated-file headers identify openapi-gen.
Remaining Bingo configuration removal
.bingo/.gitignore, .bingo/README.md, .bingo/Variables.mk, .bingo/go.mod, .bingo/variables.env
The remaining Bingo ignore rules, instructions, Makefile variables and build rules, fake module file, and environment settings are deleted.

Possibly related PRs

  • operator-framework/api#532: Moves controller-gen from Bingo to a Go tool declaration and updates its Makefile invocation.
  • operator-framework/api#531: Pins kind at v0.33.0, which this change declares as a Go tool and invokes through the Makefile.
  • operator-framework/api#522: Updates the root k8s.io/kube-openapi dependency; this change declares a separate module for the openapi-gen version.

Keep the generator build independent of the root vendor directory.

After go mod vendor, Go selects vendor mode, but vendor/modules.txt describes the root module’s dependencies, not tools/openapi.mod. The different k8s.io/kube-openapi versions make make generate and make verify fail with inconsistent vendoring. Build the generator with module mode enabled, as the previous Bingo rule did. Update the OPENAPI_GEN command to explicitly use Go module mode when building
with tools/openapi.mod, so generator builds do not use the root vendor
directory; preserve the existing generator and modfile selection.

Build the generator outside workspace mode.

If a developer uses a go.work file, make generate and make verify fail because Go rejects -modfile in workspace mode. The previous Bingo build disabled workspace mode for the tool build. Build the generator separately with workspace mode disabled, then run it with the developer’s workspace intact. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
