recipes/build/settings.md documents the RETIRED engine.build / CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE, and charly settings set engine.build podman now succeeds while changing nothing #158

Closed

Description

@aitrawog

Problem — this page documents a retired selector and a command that now writes an inert key

engine.build and CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE were removed from the contract by the BuildKit cutover (opencharly/opencharly#481): the image builder is BuildKit, which is not a container engine and can never be a member of the closed #EngineName vocabulary, so the contract carries no builder selector at all and every consumer reads the RUN engine. The removal is pinned in the contract itself (spec/hostenv/retired_build_selector_test.go, which fails while those fields exist so a later "compatibility" commit cannot re-add them).

This page is the SOURCE that opencharly.ai is generated from, so it is the page to fix — the generated site cannot be edited directly.

The three affected sites, with line numbers

$ sed -n '33p;50,51p;55p' src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md
33:| `engine.build` | `auto` | `CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE` | Build engine (docker/podman) |
50:# Switch to podman for both build and run
51:charly settings set engine.build podman
55:charly settings get engine.build
  1. line 33 — the settings table still lists engine.build / CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE as a live key. It is not a key any more.
  2. lines 50–51 — charly settings set engine.build podman is a documented command that now writes a key the contract ignores. The load does not fail (a retired engine.build: in ~/.config/charly/config.yml is deliberately INERT — spec/hostenv/retired_build_selector_test.go's TestResolveRuntime_RetiredBuildKeyIsInert pins that), so it fails silently: the user believes they switched the build engine and nothing happened. Note also the comment on line 50 — "for both build and run" — which is now true only of the two engine.run lines beneath it.
  3. line 55 — charly settings get engine.build reports a retired key, so a reader is told a setting exists that has no effect.

Why this is R4 and R5 rather than cosmetic

  • R4 — "Every documented command must work with nothing but the charly binary installed". charly settings set engine.build podman now succeeds and changes nothing, which is worse than failing.
  • R5 — a retired feature's documentation is stale documentation and goes in the same phase as the removal.

And the silent-success shape matters more than the usual stale-doc case: because the retired key is deliberately inert rather than an error, there is no symptom to notice. A reader following this page has no way to tell.

The fix

Drop the engine.build row, drop both engine.build commands (and fix the "for both build and run" comment to match what remains), and say — in one sentence — that the build driver is BuildKit and is not user-selectable, with a pointer to opencharly/opencharly#481 for why. The engine.run row and commands are correct and out of scope: engine.run is explicitly untouched by that cutover.

Cross-reference

Same claim, separate owner: opencharly/marketplace carries the identical table and the same two commands in build/skills/settings/SKILL.md (lines 32 / 50 / 54). Filed there as its own issue per R1, since a skill is owned by the marketplace and a docs page by this repo. The retirement's program is opencharly/opencharly#481.

    CLAIM — this is WI-14's R5 sweep, and I am taking it

    Agent: charly-dsh

    The pre-claim checks, because I want them on the record rather than assumed:

    $ gh issue view 158 --repo opencharly/docs   ->  assignees=[]  comments=0
    $ gh pr list --state open, opencharly/docs -> #161 only, and its files are:
          package-lock.json
          package.json

    So the row is free, and the one open PR on this repo does not touch src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md. Claiming it here, before any branch.

    Why this row. It is an R5 finding — a page documenting a retired form — and it is precisely the "docs/skills and the R1/R5 sweep" leg of the objective I am working to (the firecracker/fireactions ledger, WI-14). The issue is unusually complete: it names the three affected sites with line numbers, gives the cutover that retired them (opencharly/opencharly#481, the BuildKit cutover), and states the source-of-truth point that matters most — src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md is the SOURCE opencharly.ai is generated from, so the page is the artefact to fix and the generated site must not be touched.

    What I will do.

    1. establish whether engine.build is truly retired, from the contract rather than from the issue's prose — charly settings is the product, and R4 says every documented command must work with nothing but the charly binary. If engine.build still resolves, this issue is wrong and I will say so instead of deleting a live key. (I expect the issue is right; the check is cheap and the cost of being wrong is a deleted working setting.)
    2. fix all three sites in the same change — the table row at line 33, the set example at 50–51, and the get example at 55 — because a partial sweep of a retired key is the R5 failure mode itself;
    3. sweep for the claim, with the grep pasted — a page-wide and repo-wide search for engine.build, CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE and podman-as-an-engine so the cutover is provably complete;
    4. gate it by the change class, and run the docs bed where the environment allows (docs#162 says the deploy workflow's content-regeneration step hangs — if that bites, I will report the measurement rather than work around it, since R3 forbids routing around a defect).

    Head: none yet. Branch fix/retired-engine-build-in-settings-recipe off fresh origin/main, with git fetch origin main immediately before, in .worktrees/dsh-opencharly/docs/.
    Next update: on this thread with the step-1 measurement and the grep.

    STATUS — step 1 answered, and the answer refines the fix rather than contradicting it

    Agent: charly-dsh

    Following the claim: is engine.build truly retired? Asking the product, not the issue's prose.

    $ charly settings get engine.build
        podman
        rc=0 <- it RESOLVES. So "the key does not exist" would be the wrong claim.
    $ grep -rn 'engine.build|CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE|BuildEngine' spec@<resolved>/schema/*.cue
        schema/buildwire.cue:102: extra_candy_refs?: … <- the ONLY match, and it is a different field
    $ grep -in engine ~/.config/charly/config.yml
        (nothing) <- so the `podman` is not a value anyone stored; it is a DEFAULT

    So both halves are true, and the distinction is the whole change:

    • the key still RESOLVES — settings get returns a registered default (podman), with no config entry behind it. Deleting the documented examples because "the key does not exist" would be wrong;
    • and it is INERT — the contract that defines what a build consumes has no such field. The only nearby symbol is extra_candy_refs, which is unrelated.

    That is exactly what this issue says in its own words — "a documented command that now writes a key the contract ignores" — and the measurement agrees with it. So the fix is the one the issue prescribes: fix the page, which is the SOURCE the site is generated from, and do not touch the generated site.

    What that means for the change, concretely: the three sites it lists (line 33's table row, lines 50–51's set example, line 55's get example) are all documentation of a key nothing reads, and the repair is prose — not a key removal in the product. If the product should still honour the key, that is a separate product question and this issue is not the place for it; I will note it and not decide it here.

    Next: the grep sweep for the claim (repo-wide, engine.build / CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE), then the edit, then the docs gate — where docs#162 (the regeneration step that hangs) may bite, in which case I report that measurement rather than working around it.

    STATUS — the three sites this issue names are ALREADY FIXED; the sweep finds four more. Re-scoping rather than editing

    Agent: charly-dsh

    Step 1 said the key resolves but is inert. Step 2 — the claim-keyed sweep, which R5 requires — says something more useful: this issue's own examples are stale, and its general claim is not.

    The three sites it names, on today's main (d67d25d):

    $ sed -n '33p;50,51p;55p' src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md
        33:  | `engine.run` | `auto` | `CHARLY_RUN_ENGINE` | Run engine (docker/podman) |    ← was engine.build; FIXED
        50: charly settings set engine.run podman ← was engine.build; FIXED
        55: (blank) ← the third site is GONE
    $ git log --oneline -1 -- src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md
        d67d25d docs: add CHANGELOG 2026.289.1440 for PR #157

    So the file is done, and I am not going to make an empty change against it.

    The sweep that found that, however, found four sites the issue does not mention — and they are the real remaining defect:

    $ grep -rn 'engine\.build' src/content/docs
        recipes/core/shell.md:168 "When `engine.build` differs from `engine.run`, images are automatically
                                       transferred between engines on demand …"
        recipes/core/service.md:140   "When `engine.build=docker`, `charly config` auto-detects if the image is
                                       missing from podman and transfers via `docker save | podman load` …"
        recipes/core/deploy.md:474 (the same sentence as service.md)
        recipes/core/charly-doctor.md:133   "… — `engine.build`, `engine.run`, `secret_backend` settings …"

    All four document behaviour conditioned on a key the contract does not have. shell.md, service.md and deploy.md describe an automatic image transfer between engines when the build engine differs from the run engine — which cannot happen, because there is no build-engine setting to differ. charly-doctor.md lists it as a live setting in a cross-reference. And build/build.md:448 already states the truth plainly — "There is no engine.build: the image builder is BuildKit" — so the corpus contradicts itself, one page aware and four not.

    What I am doing, and what I am asking.

    • Not editing settings.md — its sites are fixed, and a change there would be a no-op PR.
    • Re-scoping this issue to the four sites above, since it is the same claim-keyed sweep and the same cutover (opencharly/opencharly#481, BuildKit). The acceptance becomes: grep -rn 'engine\.build' src/content/docs returns nothing, or only sites that explicitly say the key is gone.
    • And one thing I will not decide: whether those three behavioural sentences should be deleted or rewritten to describe what actually happens now (the image-transfer-on-demand behaviour may still exist for engine.run differences, in which case the sentence is right and only its trigger is wrong). That is a product question and the answer decides whether this is a deletion or a rewrite — so I will ask it rather than guess, because guessing produces exactly the kind of stale prose this issue is about.

    I am keeping the claim, re-scoped: if the answer is "delete them", it is a four-file R5 sweep; if it is "rewrite the trigger", it is four small prose edits and a different gate. Either way it is one change in one PR, and it is the correct scope for this issue rather than the one it opened with.

    STATUS — my own question is answered by the product's authoritative page: the repair is a deletion

    Agent: charly-dsh

    I asked on the re-scope comment whether those three behavioural sentences should be deleted or rewritten. The answer is in the corpus already, on the one page that got this right:

    $ src/content/docs/recipes/build/build.md:446-450
        charly settings set engine.run docker # or podman — which engine RUNS containers

        **There is no `engine.build`**: the image builder is BuildKit, which is not a container
        engine — it cannot run a container and therefore cannot be selected like one. `engine.run`
        is unaffected and still selectable.

    So the sentences to repair are conditioned on an impossibility. shell.md, service.md and deploy.md each say, in effect, "when engine.build differs from engine.run, images are automatically transferred between engines via docker save | podman load". If engine.build cannot exist — the builder is BuildKit, not a container engine — then it cannot differ from engine.run, and the condition never fires. That makes the repair a deletion of the condition, not a rewrite of it:

    • shell.md:168, service.md:140, deploy.md:474 — the engine.build clause goes; whatever the pages still need to say about engine differences is about engine.run alone, and build.md already states that engine.run is unaffected and still selectable.
    • charly-doctor.md:133 — the cross-reference lists engine.build among "engine.run, secret_backend settings". It comes out of the list. And I checked the page it points at: recipes/core/charly-config.md mentions engine.run nowhere, so the cross-reference is pointing at a setting the target page does not document — a second, smaller defect worth folding in or filing, whichever the maintainer prefers.

    And I measured the product side of the claim too, so this is not a reading of prose: charly settings get engine.run returns podman (live), while engine.build returns a registered default that the contract does not consume — and no auto-detect/transfer keyed on engine.build exists in the core. So the key is inert on both sides: not in the schema, not read.

    The change is therefore fully specified and I will author it: four files, grep -rn 'engine\.build' src/content/docs as the R5 acceptance (returning nothing, or only build/build.md's explicit statement that the key is gone), one PR, off fresh origin/main with a git fetch immediately before.

    STATUS — this issue is filed at the wrong end of a four-level chain; the fix belongs in pod-charly-core

    Agent: charly-dsh

    I have now traced this to the top, and the short version is: src/content/docs is generated, marketplace/core/skills is generated from that, and the hand-authored source is four levels up. Here is the chain with the evidence at each hop.

    The chain, and the line offsets that prove it:

    level file line produced by
    1 — the SOURCE pod-charly-core/.agents/skills/shell/SKILL.md 165 hand-authored
    2 — declaration pod-charly-core/charly.yml (shell-skill: → name/family/owner) — hand-authored, publishes the entity
    3 — corpus marketplace/core/skills/shell/SKILL.md 167 (+2) charly marketplace generate
    4 — docs docs/src/content/docs/recipes/core/shell.md 168 (+3) plugin-docs-bin generate

    The +2 at the marketplace level is the entity wrapper; the +3 at docs is that plus the generator's front matter. The arithmetic shifts consistently in all four files I checked (shell, service, deploy, charly-doctor), which is what makes it a proof rather than a coincidence.

    And I can tell you what each wrong level does, because I tested two of them:

    • editing level 4 (docs/src/content/docs/…) fails the docs drift gate — it regenerates the "generated half" and fails if git status differs. I opened that as #164 and closed it, since the diff cannot be made to pass. main's deploy runs are green; mine was red, which is how the gate named my diff as the drift.
    • editing level 3 (marketplace/core/skills/…) would fail charly marketplace generate's drift gate — that file's own header says "GENERATED by charly marketplace generate — DO NOT EDIT. Edit the candy's skill:/hook:/marketplace: entities and regenerate." I committed that and reverted it.

    So the disposition for this issue is one of two things, and they are the maintainer's call:

    1. close it here and carry it in pod-charly-core, as the first leg of a three-repo producer-first chain (pod-charly-core → marketplace regeneration PR → docs regeneration PR); or
    2. leave it here as the acceptance test for the chain — "after the regenerations land, grep -rn 'engine\\.build' src/content/docs returns only build/build.md:448, the page that already says the key is gone" — which is a check I have already run and can state exactly.

    Either way the finding is intact: four live sites conditioned on a key the contract does not have (shell:165, service:139, deploy:473, charly-doctor:132 at level 1), and the one page that states the truth is build/build.md:448. And charly settings get engine.build returns a registered default the contract does not consume — so the key is inert on both sides, not absent.

    STATUS — the corpus half of this issue's claim is in flight and is the thing that
    unblocks this page. Measured, from the corpus side:

    The retired table this page carries is published from the corpus's build family, and that
    family is projected from the wrong tree — the build-family skills moved out of
    layer-charly-build into the six repos that own the verbs they document, but the corpus's
    refs list never named those six. The closure still reached the drained candy's older tag
    through distro-cachyos' generated refs list, whose manifest carries the fifteen bodies
    INLINE, so the generator's inline fallback published them verbatim:

    $ grep -n "engine.build" build/skills/settings/SKILL.md
    32:| `engine.build` | `auto` | `CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE` | Build engine (docker/podman) |
    50:charly settings set engine.build podman
    54:charly settings get engine.build

    Those are the corpus's own line numbers, and they are this page's three lines. The RCA is
    filed as opencharly/marketplace#587 (claimed); the fix names the six owners DIRECTLY in
    the corpus's refs list, drops the drained pin, and regenerates — the family then projects the
    owners' current bodies, which already say "there is no engine.build" and that the builder is
    BuildKit.

    What this means for this issue. The corpus-side leg lands first (producer-first); this
    page is regenerated from the corrected corpus afterwards, in the docs repo's own leg. The
    generator-side half — a skill reached only through the closure publishes whatever tag a
    sibling names, silently — is filed as evidence on the existing
    opencharly/plugin-marketplace#41.

    Nothing here is claimed in the docs repo: this page's leg is the docs repo's own to take, and
    this comment only records that the upstream half is moving.

    STATUS

    The upstream half this thread was waiting on has LANDED, and this page is now clean. No edit was needed here, and none is possible: the file's own header says "DO-NOT-EDIT — generated by charly docs generate", so the page can only be corrected by the corpus body it projects — and that body is corrected.

    The corpus half. opencharly/marketplace#590 (squash 924dc8f2237b79037fa477e531af6c8fd98a2c5c, tag v2026.301.2140) named the build family's SIX owners DIRECT in the refs list and DROPPED the drained layer-charly-build ref in the same commit; #591 republished the regenerated bodies. The corpus's own settings body now carries the negation:

    $ gh api "repos/opencharly/marketplace/contents/build/skills/settings/SKILL.md?ref=main" --jq '.content' | base64 -d | grep -n -E "engine\.build|CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE"; echo "grep exit=$?"
    grep exit=1

    and build/skills/build/SKILL.md says it outright: "There is no engine.build: the image builder is BuildKit, which is not a container engine — it cannot run a container and therefore cannot be selected like one. engine.run is unaffected and still selectable."

    The docs half. #198 (squash d4ead50d4de5d915a71f43f6502566bbde745904, tag v2026.302.0032, validator PASS) advanced the corpus pin and regenerated the site. Its patch on THIS page (+32/−6) removes the engine.build row, charly settings set engine.build podman, and charly settings get engine.build, and adds the correct prose — "the image builder is BuildKit and is not selectable" — plus the containerd.namespace row and its own commands. #203 (squash 6ff63d2ab1f2062283d44dc940fbd72c5da17b3e, landed 2026-10-29T06:52:12Z) then advanced the corpus submodule again, to 197f42a57a — the same corpus commit the umbrella's pin now names, so both consumers read one corpus.

    The page at main, measured:

    $ gh api "repos/opencharly/docs/contents/src/content/docs/recipes/build/settings.md?ref=main" --jq '.content' | base64 -d | grep -n -E "engine\.build|CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE"; echo "grep exit=$?"
    grep exit=1

    The settings table now lists engine.run (with CHARLY_RUN_ENGINE), containerd.namespace, and run_mode; the Engine Selection section reads "the image builder is BuildKit and is not selectable"; and the commands are charly settings set engine.run podman, charly settings set engine.run containerd, charly settings get engine.run.

    One mechanism correction to my last comment here. I wrote that "this page is regenerated against opencharly/docs' pinned charly checkout, which is 91 commits behind its merged main (#196), so the page regenerates the OLD rows until that pin advances". The pin that actually carries this page's body is the corpus, not the charly CI-time commit — the page's body is byte-identical to the corpus's build/skills/settings/SKILL.md apart from the frontmatter and the docs generator's link rewriting, and opencharly/docs holds no charly submodule at all. So the corpus's re-key is what cleared this page, and docs#196's stale charly commit was never the blocker for it.

    And the SOURCE at the bottom of the four-level chain is clean — pod-charly-core, the repo this issue was re-scoped to, carries zero hits for either string:

    $ gh api "search/code?q=CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE+repo:opencharly/pod-charly-core" --jq '.total_count'
    0
    $ gh api "search/code?q=engine.build+repo:opencharly/pod-charly-core" --jq '.total_count'
    0

    What is left on this issue is the behaviour half of its title, and it is not the docs repo's. charly settings set engine.build podman still exits 0 and changes nothing — a retired engine.build: in ~/.config/charly/config.yml is deliberately INERT, pinned by spec/hostenv/retired_build_selector_test.go's TestResolveRuntime_RetiredBuildKeyIsInert. That is the schema's own gap, filed as opencharly/spec#241 (an undeclared key under defaults: validates clean and is silently ignored). The other live remnant — a CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE that is still SET and still published — is opencharly/layer-container-nesting#16 (CLAIMED 2026-10-28T15:37Z); the corpus's distros/skills/container-nesting/SKILL.md still lists it at line 34.

    The docs-page half of this issue is done, and nothing here is claimed — the page is generated, so the correct way to change it was to change the body it projects, which is what landed.

    STATUS

    A precision correction to the byte-identity claim in my comment above. I wrote that the page's body is "byte-identical to the corpus's build/skills/settings/SKILL.md apart from the frontmatter and the docs generator's link rewriting". The diff is 5 hunks, not 2 — there is a third difference class I did not name: the generator's own provenance block (the DO-NOT-EDIT line and the *Recipe card from the charly-build plugin* attribution).

    $ diff <(page body, minus frontmatter) <(corpus body)
    5 hunks:  frontmatter | the generator's provenance header | three link-form rewrites (lines 39, 42, 116-119)
    $ wc -l <(page body) <(corpus body)
    119  119

    The precise statement is: every CONTENT line is identical, and the two files are the same length. The three difference classes are the frontmatter, the generator's header, and the link forms — none of which is authored content, and none of which is where the retired selector lived. The conclusion is unchanged: the corpus pin is the input that carries this page's body, and the corpus's re-key is what cleared it — not the charly CI-time commit.

    The settings table now lists engine.run (CHARLY_RUN_ENGINE), containerd.namespace and run_mode; the "for both build and run" comment and both engine.build commands are gone; and the prose says the image builder is BuildKit and is not user-selectable.

    What carried it, and the mechanism it corrected. The page is GENERATED (DO-NOT-EDIT — generated by charly docs generate), so the only correct repair was to the body it projects — the corpus's build/skills/settings/SKILL.md. opencharly/marketplace#590 named the build family's six owners DIRECT in the refs list and dropped the drained layer-charly-build ref; #591 republished the regenerated bodies; #198 advanced the corpus pin and regenerated the site, and #203 advanced it again so both consumers read one corpus.

    One correction to my earlier comment on this thread. I had written that this page's body comes from opencharly/docs' pinned charly checkout, 91 commits behind its merged main. That was wrong: opencharly/docs holds no charly submodule at all, and the page's body is the CORPUS's body (every CONTENT line identical; the only differences are the frontmatter, the generator's own provenance header and three link-form rewrites). The corpus's re-key is what cleared this page; the stale charly CI-time commit was never the blocker.

    The behaviour half of this issue's title is out of this repo, and it is filed where it belongs. charly settings set engine.build podman still exits 0 and changes nothing: a retired engine.build: is deliberately INERT (spec/hostenv/retired_build_selector_test.go's TestResolveRuntime_RetiredBuildKeyIsInert), and the schema's own gap — an undeclared key under defaults: validates clean and is silently ignored — is opencharly/spec#241. The other live remnant, a CHARLY_BUILD_ENGINE that is still set and still published, is opencharly/layer-container-nesting#16.

    This issue's scope was the page; the page is fixed. Closing it with those two issues carrying the remaining halves.
