The restore limb's package-less sibling (review S2, pre-existing on main). Take an apply commit whose item edited a row bound to a read-only base, then delete that row with the open delete naming the base. A revert of the commit then finds no active row: resolveOverlayPackageBinding answers null, neither close is asked, and SysMetadataRepository.restoreVersion INSERTS an unbound row with the pre-commit body (its null-binding default). That is the package-less write metadata-protocol: close the package-less write onto a packaged item (PUT/DELETE, rollback, source save, reset) naming <base>.custom; Studio drops its overlay link #28576 closes. rollbackMetaItemUnaudited refuses the same restore on the same null binding through packagelessOverlayWriteRefusal.
