The L2CAP examples no longer build on current master, and their channel onConnect handlers were never called.

  • L2CAP_Server still passed a pointer to NimBLEServer::setCallbacks(), which takes a reference since 03b4618. It now uses a static callbacks instance, the same pattern already applied to L2CAP_Client.
  • Both examples overrode NimBLEL2CAPChannelCallbacks::onConnect(NimBLEL2CAPChannel*), but the base class declares onConnect(NimBLEL2CAPChannel*, uint16_t negotiatedMTU). The handler only hid the virtual (an error under GCC 15 with -Werror=overloaded-virtual) and never ran — in the server, connected stayed false, so the status report never printed. Both now use the correct signature and log the negotiated MTU.
  • L2CAP_Client had an onMTUChange() that does not exist in the base class; removed. data.size() is printed with %zu.
  • All callback overrides are marked override, like the other examples, so a signature mismatch fails to compile instead of silently doing nothing.

Validation (local): L2CAP_Server and L2CAP_Client build for ESP32-S3 with ESP-IDF v6.1 and v5.5, without warnings in the example sources.

The L2CAP examples are not part of the CI example matrix, which is why this went unnoticed; adding them is left for the separate test PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updated L2CAP client and server connection handling to match the callback API, improving compatibility with connection events.
  • Improvements
    • Connection logs now include the negotiated MTU, and client read logs report byte counts more clearly. These changes make connection and data-transfer details easier to inspect when using the L2CAP examples.

Walkthrough

Arrr, the L2CAP client and server examples update callback declarations to match their callback APIs and report the negotiated MTU. The client read log uses %zu for the byte count. The server registers its existing gattCallbacks instance.

The callback fixes leave two bounded reporting problems in the server example: bandwidth includes idle time before data arrives, and status output can mix connection state. These warrant correction or explicit follow-up but do not establish a blocker to data transfer.

What changed in this PR

Updates the L2CAP examples to match the current callback APIs, restoring build compatibility and ensuring channel connection handlers run.

Changes:

  • Registers the server’s GATT callbacks by reference using a static-lifetime instance.
  • Corrects both L2CAP onConnect signatures, logs the negotiated MTU, and marks callback overrides explicitly.
  • Removes the client’s unsupported onMTUChange handler and uses %zu for byte counts.

Remove the connect-time startTime assignment so bandwidth starts at the first data.

Now that onConnect runs, line 48 sets startTime when the channel opens. The startTime == 0 guard in onRead (lines 56-58) then never passes. Bandwidth and the status output include the idle time between connection and the first data. Remove line 48 so onRead starts the timer when data arrives.

Suggested fix

         frameErrors = 0;
-        startTime = esp_timer_get_time();
         buffer.clear();

Guard the status reads and callback writes with one lock, matey.

The status loop in app_main reads connected, totalBytesReceived, totalFramesReceived, and startTime with no synchronization. The NimBLE host task writes these fields in onRead() and onDisconnect(). Since onConnect() now sets connected, the loop runs during normal use. A status line can mix counters and startTime from different connections. For example, a read can see startTime reset to 0 by a disconnect and print a bandwidth computed from a since-boot elapsed time. Protect these fields with a common lock or portMUX in the callbacks and in the status loop.
