Add WorkersD1KvStore backed by Cloudflare D1 - #1360
Fedify writes to its key–value store about as often as it reads from it: every incoming activity triggers an idempotency check followed by a write, and the remote document and public key caches write on every miss. Workers KV is tuned and priced for read-heavy workloads and is eventually consistent, which matters for one-time signature nonces and idempotency records. WorkersKvStore also cannot implement cas(), so some features fall back to non-atomic code paths on Cloudflare Workers.
This PR adds WorkersD1KvStore to @fedify/cfworkers, a KvStore backed by Cloudflare D1, and makes it the recommended store for Workers deployments. It is a port of the D1 store I have been running on my blog, rewritten against the raw D1 API without Drizzle.
Changes
Added WorkersD1KvStore with get(), set(), delete(), list(), and cas().
Since D1 has no interactive transactions, each cas() call is a single conditional SQL statement:
When the expected value is undefined, it uses INSERT … ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE … WHERE expires <= now, so expired entries count as missing.
Otherwise, it uses UPDATE/DELETE … WHERE, comparing the stored and expected values structurally with json_tree() in both directions. The order of object members is ignored, while array order and value types matter.
set() purges expired entries in the same batch round trip.
list() matches prefixes with substr() rather than LIKE, so % and _ in keys are matched literally.
Added the tableName (default fedify_kv) and initialized options. The store creates its table on first use; with initialized: true, the schema can be managed by D1 migrations instead.
Added WorkersD1DatabaseLike and WorkersD1PreparedStatementLike, so both D1Database and D1DatabaseSession from @cloudflare/workers-types (and wrangler types output) are accepted.
Updated docs/manual/kv.md, docs/manual/deploy.md, docs/manual/tasks.md, docs/manual/opentelemetry.md, the package README, and the Fedify skill to recommend WorkersD1KvStore over WorkersKvStore.
Added a changelog fragment.
Testing
Added packages/cfworkers/test/d1.test.ts, which runs against a D1 binding in @cloudflare/vitest-pool-workers (Miniflare). It covers structural comparison in cas(), expiry, TTLs, concurrent cas() calls, and prefix listing. All 64 tests in the package pass on Node.js.
Extended test/typecheck/workers-types.ts to check that D1Database and D1DatabaseSession are accepted.
mise run check-each cfworkers, mise run check:types -- cfworkers, mise run check:md, and mise run docs:build pass.
mise run test-each cfworkers fails locally at the Deno step with Could not find referrer npm package … vitest. The same error occurs on an unmodified main, so it appears to be a local Deno cache issue unrelated to this change. I did not run the Bun step.
The original Drizzle-based implementation of this store runs in production on my blog. This rewritten version has so far been tested in Miniflare only.
AI disclosure
This PR was written with the assistance of Claude Code (claude-opus-5-5). It ported my existing D1 store to the raw D1 API, and wrote the tests, documentation, and changelog fragment. I reviewed the changes.
Fedify writes to its key-value store about as often as it reads from it,
and idempotency records and signature nonces need strong consistency.
Workers KV is tuned for read-heavy workloads, is eventually consistent,
and cannot support cas(), so WorkersKvStore is a poor fit for Fedify on
Cloudflare Workers.
This commit includes the following changes:
- Added WorkersD1KvStore to @fedify/cfworkers, with cas() implemented
as a single conditional SQL statement per call, since D1 has no
interactive transactions. Values are compared structurally with
json_tree(), ignoring the order of object members.
- Added WorkersD1DatabaseLike and WorkersD1PreparedStatementLike so that
both D1Database and D1DatabaseSession bindings are accepted.
- Added binding-based tests and type checks for the new store.
- Updated the documentation and the Fedify skill to recommend
WorkersD1KvStore over WorkersKvStore on Cloudflare Workers.

Thank you for your first contribution to Fedify.
The single-statement CAS design is sound, but the expiry predicate uses a timestamp captured before the D1 request. A delayed CAS can therefore write after another reader has observed the key as expired; I reproduced this with the built store and a delayed SQLite binding. The other major items are the unconditional strong-consistency claim for session bindings, per-request initialization DDL, and the unbounded and non-indexed implementation of list().
Minor notes that do not warrant separate comments: json_tree() rejects nesting beyond 1,000 levels while set() and get() accept it; there is no drop() for test teardown; the index name is ${tableName}_expires while the SQLite adapter uses idx_${tableName}_expires; and “priced for balanced read and write workloads” overstates the symmetry of D1 pricing.
The review of fedify-dev#1360 found that
cas() compared expiration against a timestamp taken before the D1
request, so a delayed CAS could overwrite an entry that a concurrent
reader had already observed as expired. It also pointed out unbounded
work in list() and set(), per-request initialization, and documentation
that overstated the store's guarantees.
This commit includes the following changes:
- Compared and computed expiration with D1's own clock inside each
statement, and added a regression test with a delayed binding.
- Fetched list() results in bounded, keyset-paginated batches over an
indexed key range instead of buffering one unbounded scan.
- Bounded the expired-entry sweep, and ran it on cas() writes too.
- Fell back to comparing serializations in cas() for values nested
deeper than json_tree() accepts.
- Rejected table names reserved by SQLite and D1, renamed the index to
idx_<table>_expires to match SqliteKvStore, and added drop().
- Documented that D1 sessions only provide sequential consistency, and
recommended D1 migrations with initialized: true in production.
- Updated the Deno KV deprecation guidance and remaining examples to
recommend WorkersD1KvStore on Cloudflare Workers.
- Added tests for initialization, sessions, competing instances, TTLs
on update, pagination, and escaped or Unicode prefixes, and a type
check against wrangler-generated D1 declarations.

Clarify the tableName validation rules.
The constructor rejects "1kv", an empty string, and a name of 65 letters. The tableName documentation does not describe these restrictions, so callers can encounter an unexpected TypeError.
Confirm the intended rules, then align the option JSDoc, constructor @throws text, and manual with them.

Synchronize the in-flight expiry test.
If insertion or initialization takes longer than 300 ms, the entry may expire before the UPDATE reaches D1Spy. The test can then pass without checking expiration while the operation is in flight.
Gate the UPDATE batch and assert that the entry is still live when it reaches the gate. Wait for the D1 clock to pass the expiry before releasing the batch.

Thanks for working through the review. The changes address the issues I raised: expiry now uses D1's clock, the list path is paginated and indexed, and the docs and tests cover the new behavior.
This looks ready to merge to me, so I'm approving it. Is there anything you're still working on, or is there a reason it's still a draft?
