Closes #1272, part of #207.

This adds getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(), which read any property of a vocabulary object by its full IRI and return expanded JSON-LD. Until now the only way to get at a property Fedify has no accessor for was the JSON-LD cache, which disappears as soon as an object is cloned or built by hand. The design was settled in #1272 (comment); this note covers how it was implemented.

Retention

Decoding keeps only the properties the concrete class does not know, frozen in a WeakMap outside the JSON-LD cache. Embedded objects keep theirs too, and clone() and deepClone() copy them. Known properties, including redundant aliases such as https://schema.org/license, are not retained. They are encoded from the typed fields on demand by per-property encoders that @fedify/vocab-tools generates, so the result reflects the current values rather than the original input. This is not a strict round trip, and the manual says so.

Embedded objects decoded through a superclass inherited the internal _fromSubclass flag and skipped retention, so they get a separate internal _retainsRawProperties option.

I meant to resolve relative references in retained values against the document base, but passing base to jsonld.expand() also resolves values in the fedify:absoluteIri range ("CC-BY-4.0" became a URL). Relative references are therefore returned as they are, which is documented.

Dispatch across modules

The functions are exported from every generated module, not only @fedify/vocab. They call a method keyed by a Symbol.for() protocol symbol, so objects from a third-party vocabulary module work with the functions from @fedify/vocab and vice versa. The new VocabularyObject interface in @fedify/vocab-runtime types this through a "~fedify.vocab" string brand. Encoding is async and tracks the objects on the current path, so a cycle throws a TypeError instead of recursing forever.

Property IRIs

The IRI argument must be absolute; terms, JSON-LD keywords, and blank node identifiers throw. Lookup tries the string as given, then its WHATWG-normalized form. An IRI with a scheme other than http or https logs a warning, because it is usually a compact IRI such as as:content, which is looked up literally. The new @fedify/lint rule raw-property-iri-invalid catches both cases statically. Its modules option, for other generated vocabulary modules, works with ESLint and Oxlint only, since Deno Lint plugins take no options.

This pull request adds raw expanded JSON-LD property access to generated vocabulary objects. Decoding retains unsupported properties, while supported properties are encoded from current typed values. It also updates embedded-object context handling and adds a lint rule for invalid or non-HTTP(S) property IRIs passed to the accessors.

Changes: Vocabulary property access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime contract and IRI handling
packages/vocab-runtime/src/vocabulary-object.ts, packages/vocab-runtime/src/internal/raw-property.ts, packages/vocab-runtime/src/mod.ts, packages/vocab-runtime/package.json, packages/vocab-runtime/deno.json, packages/vocab-runtime/tsdown.config.ts, packages/vocab-runtime/src/internal/raw-property.test.ts
Adds public types for vocabulary objects and expanded JSON-LD values. Runtime code retains unknown properties, validates property IRIs, and returns cloned results.
Generated vocabulary retention and access

Generated classes retain unknown properties and expose raw-property accessors. Supported properties use current typed values. Clone operations copy retained properties, and tests and documentation describe lookup, returned values, and retention.
Embedded-object context handling
packages/vocab-tools/src/property.ts, packages/vocab/src/vocab.test.ts, CHANGES.md, changes.d/vocab-tools/embedded-object-context.md, changes.d/vocab/embedded-object-context.md
Embedded-property accessors check whether cached property keys match the property URI or a redundant-property URI. Matching embedded values are decoded with the cached document context.
Raw-property IRI lint rule
packages/lint/src/lib/raw-property-iri.ts, packages/lint/src/rules/raw-property-iri-invalid.ts, packages/lint/src/index.ts, packages/lint/src/mod.ts, packages/lint/src/oxlint.ts, packages/lint/src/lib/const.ts, packages/lint/src/lib/messages.ts, packages/lint/src/tests/raw-property-iri-invalid.test.ts, packages/lint/README.md, docs/manual/lint.md, CHANGES.md, changes.d/lint/*
Adds a rule that checks statically known IRIs used by raw-property helpers. ESLint and Oxlint accept configured module names; the Deno adapter uses the default modules. Tests and documentation describe analysis, suggestions, configuration, and diagnostics.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Read unsupported vocabulary properties by IRI" matches the main change. The PR adds getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(), which read vocabulary-object properties by full IRI and return expanded JSON-LD. The title is short, specific, and does not use vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is directly related to the changeset. It states that the PR adds getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(), explains retention of unknown properties, cross-module dispatch, IRI validation rules, the raw-property-iri-invalid lint rule, and follow-up issues. It is detailed and on topic.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1272] The PR adds getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(). Generated modules export both functions. Each requirement maps to the PR summary as follows:

  • Lookup by full absolute IRI with prefix and alias handling: the functions expand JSON-LD values. packages/vocab/src/raw-property.test.ts covers prefix-independent, alias, and normalized-IRI matching.
  • Empty array for a missing property: getRawPropertyValues() returns []. getRawPropertyValue() returns null as its single-value counterpart.
  • Expanded JSON-LD values: values are returned as expanded JSON-LD. Tests cover literal, list, JSON, and object values.
  • No automatic dereferencing: lookup does not fetch IRI-valued properties. Relative references are returned unchanged, and the manual documents this.
  • No mutable internal state: retained values are deep-frozen. The protocol read returns unfrozen copies.
  • Independence from the JSON-LD cache: unknown properties are retained in a WeakMap outside the cache. Embedded objects retain them. clone() and deepClone() copy them. Tests cover embedded objects, reparsing, cloning, and serialization.
  • Parent and local contexts: the embedded-object accessor fix (vocab-tools property.ts and raw-property.ts) applies the enclosing context. This addresses the reported case where an embedded Note lost its extension. vocab.test.ts covers the context case.
  • Documentation: docs/manual/vocab.md documents lookup, value shapes, empty results, and retention. It includes usage examples.
The issue defers writing extension properties to #207. The PR does not implement that work, which is correct. Follow-ups #1354 and #1355 are not required by #1272.
This assessment relies on the whole-PR summary, the changelog and documentation summaries, and the listed test coverage. No source read was possible in this session, so the test and behavior claims are not verified line by line.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each change group connects to the #1272 read API or its stated requirements:

  • Runtime types and protocol (packages/vocab-runtime: VocabularyObject, RawPropertyValue, internal/raw-property, package.json and tsdown entries): needed to dispatch the read API across generated modules through a Symbol.for() protocol.
  • Retention, clone, and deepClone changes (vocab-tools codec, constructor, class): needed so extension data survives decoding, embedding, and cloning.
  • Generated descriptors and encoders (vocab-tools raw-property.ts): produce the read results from typed values and retained values.
  • Embedded-object accessor changes (vocab-tools property.ts and type.ts, and the vocab.test.ts fixture): the issue reports that an embedded object with its own context lost extension data. These changes address that case.
  • Exports from packages/vocab and packages/vocab-runtime: expose the API and types.
  • raw-property-iri-invalid lint rule: a static check for invalid IRIs passed to the new API. It is not required by #1272, but it is closely tied to the API's IRI rules. It does not add unrelated behavior.
  • Changelog entries, skill documentation, and manual pages: document the API and its behavior.
No change adds the deferred #207 write API or unrelated functionality. The lint rule is the largest change outside the issue's listed requirements. It is connected to the new API, so it is not an unrelated change.
Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 46.15% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 26 functions across 22 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Remove withRawProperty and withRawProperties until those APIs exist.

This PR adds only getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(). The functions set also matches withRawProperty and withRawProperties. Lines 364-388 then assume an argument shape for withRawProperties (an object literal or an array of tuples), and the tests lock in that shape. The PR lists these helpers as follow-ups (#1354, #1355). Neither the docs nor the changelog describe them.

If the final API differs, this rule will produce wrong reports or miss real ones. Add the names and the shape handling in the PR that introduces those functions.

When an accessor reparses an embedded object without its parent's
context, some nested values can fail to decode and be dropped. The
retained unknown properties were then copied by position, so a
remaining id-less attachment could receive the properties of the one
that was dropped.

Nested objects are still paired by position when the reparse kept
every value. Otherwise only objects with the same id are paired, and
the rest get no retained properties rather than another object's.

ESLint and typescript-eslint attach enumerable tokens and comments
arrays to the Program node. Their elements have a string type, so the
raw-property-iri-invalid rule walked every token and comment as if it
were an AST node. Skipping them changes no results.

The raw-property-iri-invalid rule also matched withRawProperty() and
withRawProperties(), and assumed an argument shape for the latter,
although neither function exists yet. If the final API differs, the
rule would report the wrong arguments or miss real ones. The write
functions and their argument handling belong in the change that adds
them; see fedify-dev#1355.

Addressed the outside-diff finding in the CodeRabbit review on packages/lint/src/lib/raw-property-iri.ts (lines 30–35): 0c19331 removes withRawProperty() and withRawProperties() from the rule, along with the argument-shape handling and their tests. The rule will be extended in the pull request for #1355, as noted in #1355 (comment).

An outer-only type alias can make the cached reparse of an embedded
object pick a different class than the original decode, for example
Object instead of Question. The reparsed object then retains
properties such as oneOf that the original class knew, but copying the
original's retention over it deleted them, so getRawPropertyValues()
returned nothing for a property present in the input.

Retention is now copied only between objects of the same class and id,
at the root as well as for nested objects.

The previous fix kept the reparsed object's own retention when the
reparse picked a different class, but dropped the original's. A
property expanded with a prefix that only the parent's context defined,
such as quant:structuredUrl, then disappeared, and objects nested in
the reparsed object were not visited at all.

When the classes differ, the original's retained values are now merged
into the copy's for the properties the copy's class does not know
either, and nested objects are followed through the properties both
classes declare. Objects of the same class still take the original's
retention as is.

Applications cannot read JSON-LD properties that Fedify has no typed
accessor for without relying on the serialization cache, whose
retention of unknown properties depends on contexts and options. This
adds the runtime half of a read API for them:

- VocabularyObject, an interface every class generated by
@fedify/vocab-tools will implement. Its "~fedify.vocab" brand is a
string key, so that objects generated against different copies of
@fedify/vocab-runtime stay assignable to each other's declarations.
- RawPropertyValue and its value, node, and list object shapes for
  expanded JSON-LD values.
- Internal helpers under @fedify/vocab-runtime/internal/raw-property
for the functions that the generator will emit: property IRI
validation and lookup keys, a warning for non-HTTP(S) schemes with
hints for well-known prefixes, retention of unknown properties,
normalization of encoded values, cycle detection while encoding
nested objects, and a Symbol.for() protocol through which one
generated module's functions can read another module's objects.

fedify-dev#1272

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Every module generated by @fedify/vocab-tools, including @fedify/vocab,
now exports getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue(), which
read a property of a generated object by its full IRI and return its
values in expanded JSON-LD. This lets applications read properties
that Fedify has no accessor for, such as the token Aurboda delivers in
quant:structuredUrl, without depending on the JSON-LD cache.

- The outermost fromJsonLd() frame retains the properties the concrete
class does not know, independently of the cache and of decoding
failures in other properties. Embedded objects retain their own,
even when a superclass of their parent decodes them, through an
internal _retainsRawProperties marker that, unlike _fromSubclass,
does not leak into embedded values.
- clone() and deepClone() share the retained properties. When an
accessor reparses an embedded object from the cached JSON-LD, which
lacks the parent's context, the properties retained from the whole
document are carried over to it and to its nested objects.
- For known properties, including redundant aliases, generated
per-property encoders re-encode the current typed values without
going through accessors, so lookups never fetch or change trust
  state. Nested encoding detects cycles.
- Root classes implement VocabularyObject and install the raw
property protocol method, so one module's functions accept objects
  generated into another module.

Relative references in retained values are left unresolved: passing
the document base to the decode-side expansion would also resolve
fedify:absoluteIri values, which must never be resolved.

The manual gains a section on reading unsupported properties, and the
agent skills mention the functions.

getRawPropertyValues() and getRawPropertyValue() take full property
IRIs and never expand prefixes, so a term or a JSON-LD keyword throws
at runtime and a compact IRI such as as:content is looked up literally
and matches nothing. The new rule reports statically known IRI
arguments with these mistakes: string literals, templates without
expressions, new URL() calls without a base, normalized as the URL
parser does, and const bindings to them. For well-known prefixes it
suggests the full IRI.

By default it inspects functions imported from @fedify/vocab. With
ESLint and Oxlint, the modules option adds other vocabulary modules
generated by @fedify/vocab-tools; Deno Lint plugin rules cannot take
options, which the manual documents.

The raw-property-iri-invalid rule collected declarations inside a
TypeScript namespace body into the surrounding scope, so a const in the
namespace overwrote an outer binding of the same name. A call outside
the namespace could then be reported for the namespace's value instead
of the IRI it passes at runtime. Namespace bodies now get their own
scope, which also holds their var declarations, since TypeScript
compiles a namespace body to a function body.

Action performed

Full review finished.

The raw-property-iri-invalid rule bound only function and class
declaration names, so a TypeScript namespace or enum declared with the
same name as a namespace import did not shadow it. A call such as
vocab.getRawPropertyValue({}, "content") inside code that declared
namespace vocab {} was then reported, although it does not call the
imported function. Namespace and enum declarations now bind their
names like function and class declarations.

Accessors decode an embedded object that has its own @context again
from the parent's cached JSON-LD, so that the returned object keeps
its original JSON-LD. That decoding saw only the embedded object's own
context, not the enclosing document's. A type or property term that
only the parent defined could therefore yield an object of another
class or drop property values, and the raw property retention tried to
make up for it by pairing the reparsed objects with the originally
decoded ones, which cannot be done reliably. The accessors also took
the cached documents under the property's default term even when the
parent's context remapped that term, returning entirely different
objects.

The cached embedded document is now decoded with the parent's context
prepended, leaving out the entries its own context repeats, so terms
resolve as they did for the whole document. Before that, the parent's
context is checked to map the default term, and no other term, to the
property; otherwise the accessor keeps the object decoded with the
whole document. With these, the reparsed object retains the same
unknown properties by itself, so the pairing helpers are removed.

The tests for reparse failures relied on a type alias defined only in
the parent's context, which now resolves. They use a property-scoped
context instead, which a reparse of the embedded object alone still
cannot apply.

The previous change bound every TypeScript namespace name, but a
namespace containing only interfaces and type aliases declares no value
and does not shadow an outer binding. An imported helper called next to
such a namespace of the same name then went unchecked. Namespaces are
now bound only when they declare a value, including through nested
namespaces.

TypeScript enum initializers can refer to the enum's members by their
bare names, which shadow outer bindings of the same names. The
raw-property-iri-invalid rule resolved such names to the outer bindings,
so a call in an initializer could be reported for a value it does not
pass. Enums now get a scope holding their member names, and the rule
also visits member initializers under Deno, whose AST exposes them only
through getters.

The IRI syntax check for raw property lookups rejected square brackets
after the authority, but accepted any bracketed text in the authority,
so an IRI such as https://[abc]/x was looked up instead of throwing a
TypeError. Brackets must now enclose the whole host and delimit an
IPv6 address or an IPvFuture literal, as RFC 3986 requires, and may not
appear in the userinfo. The raw-property-iri-invalid lint rule applies
the same check.

TypeScript import aliases, such as import iri = M.iri, declare a value
binding, but the raw-property-iri-invalid rule did not collect them.
A call reading such an alias was therefore checked against an outer
const of the same name. On the other hand, a namespace whose only
contents were non-exported import aliases was treated as declaring a
value, so it hid an imported helper of the same name. Import aliases
now bind their names, and non-exported ones no longer make a namespace
a value.

The changelog entries for the embedded object context fix named only
the pull request, while each entry must reference both the issue and
the pull request. The fix came out of the review of the raw property
work for fedify-dev#1272, so the
entries now reference that issue.

When an accessor decoded a cached embedded object, it dropped the
parent's context entries that the embedded object's own context
repeated. That could move a parent entry ahead of the entry defining a
term it refers to: with a parent context of [AS, { Alias: "Note" }]
and an embedded AS context, the result [{ Alias: "Note" }, AS] failed
to expand.

The parent's entries now keep their order and come before the embedded
object's own context. Only when the own context already begins with
all of the parent's entries is it used as is, which keeps the common
case of a repeated ActivityStreams context unchanged.

P2 Badge Respect non-propagating contexts when reparsing children

When the parent context contains a non-propagating entry, replaying it on the child as a top-level node changes which terms apply. For example, with [AS, { "@propagate": false, "body": "as:content" }] on a Create and @context: AS on its embedded Note (AS is the ActivityStreams context), the initial decode correctly does not treat the child's body as content. This concatenation activates that alias during getObject()'s reparse, so the returned Note has different content from both the initial decode and the previous child-only parse. Preserve the effective inherited context or fall back to the already-decoded value when it cannot be reconstructed safely.

P2 Badge Reuse exported bindings in merged namespace scopes

When TypeScript code reopens a namespace, earlier exported members remain visible, but every TSModuleBlock here starts with an empty binding map. With read imported as the helper, const iri = "content"; namespace N { export const iri = "https://example/p"; } namespace N { read(obj, iri); } is therefore diagnosed using the outer "content", even though TypeScript emits read(obj, N.iri) and the runtime receives the HTTPS IRI. This produces a false error under the strict configuration. Carry exported bindings across merged declarations while keeping non-exported locals separate, or conservatively avoid following outer constants in this case.
