Support SVG favicons in fedify nodeinfo by rasterizing them to PNG with @resvg/resvg-wasm before readImage(), so the existing Jimp pipeline and terminal-art renderer stay unchanged (packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.ts).
Added @resvg/resvg-wasm to the CLI's deno.json and package.json.
Changed getFaviconUrl() to use the first declared SVG icon instead of /favicon.ico when no bitmap icon is declared. Declared bitmap icons are still preferred.
Added rasterizeSvg(), which converts SVG favicons to PNG before readImage().
SVG responses are detected by their Content-Type or by an <svg> tag near the start of the body.
The resvg module and its WebAssembly binary are loaded lazily in loadSvgRasterizer(), only when an SVG favicon is actually rendered.
The longer side of the SVG is fitted to the terminal art width (38 px), so a remote SVG cannot request an arbitrarily large bitmap.
Rendering failures fall through to the existing catch, so NodeInfo is still shown without a favicon.
Added tests for SVG rasterization, the size limit, and the fallback, and moved the console output capture into a captureOutput() helper shared with the existing favicon test.
Also, verified the standalone CLI built with deno compile: ran it outside the checkout against a test NodeInfo server that declares only an SVG favicon, exposed through a tunnel, and it rendered the SVG with the bundled WebAssembly module without downloading it at runtime.

fedify nodeinfo now selects SVG favicons when no bitmap icon is available and rasterizes SVG content before image decoding. If rendering the selected favicon fails, it retries /favicon.ico. If that attempt also fails, the existing error handling displays no favicon.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1238 has five coding requirements. Each is implemented at head c5695f0 in packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.ts:
Relax SVG filtering while preferring bitmaps [#1238]: getFaviconUrl() now checks .svg paths and image/svg+xml type before size filtering. An SVG link is stored as svgCandidate and the loop continues. A bitmap link that passes the size filter is returned first. The SVG candidate is returned only when no bitmap qualifies.
Detect SVG and rasterize before readImage() [#1238]: renderFavicon() calls rasterizeSvg() when the buffer is not PNG and the Content-Type is image/svg+xml or isSvg() matches an <svg> tag in the first 1024 bytes. The result is passed to readImage().
Defer heavy initialization [#1238]: loadSvgRasterizer() caches a promise. It imports @resvg/resvg-wasm and calls initWasm() only on the first SVG render.
Limit rasterization dimensions [#1238]: rasterizeSvg() uses fitTo with mode width or height, based on the longer side, and value DEFAULT_IMAGE_WIDTH. It rejects SVGs with width or height below 1 and renders with no visible pixels as errors.
Preserve fallback on failure [#1238]: rendering errors reach the existing outer catch in runNodeInfo(), which logs the error and shows no favicon.
The PR adds a retry of /favicon.ico when the chosen favicon fails. This extends the fallback. It is documented in CHANGES.md and reviewed in the PR discussion. It does not remove the existing fallback.
The PR description and objectives state that focused tests exist for SVG selection, MIME variants, rasterization dimensions, failed rendering, retry, and mocked network calls. I did not read nodeinfo.test.ts. This conclusion relies on that summary and on the source diff. The maintainer reported passing test runs at bd16a8a. I did not rerun them at head c5695f0.
No coding requirement from #1238 is unmet in the reviewed source.

Explanation
All changes support the SVG favicon behavior in #1238 or its documentation and tests:
packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.ts: SVG selection, detection, rasterization, lazy loading, size limit, and the fallback retry. The retry changes behavior on the fallback path, but it applies only after a discovered favicon fails. The reviewed diff shows no change outside favicon handling.
packages/cli/deno.json and package.json: add @resvg/resvg-wasm, which SVG rasterization requires.
packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.test.ts: tests for the new SVG behavior. The summary also reports a captureOutput() helper, which supports the existing favicon test. I did not inspect this file.
docs/cli.md: documents that SVG text is not drawn and that text-only SVGs fall back to /favicon.ico. The maintainer requested this text.
CHANGES.md and changes.d/cli/*.md: changelog entries for this feature. They do not add behavior.
The summary notes that the selector now considers every declared size. The diff shows this is the existing tokens.some() check, which the PR does not change. No unrelated change is established.

Apply the size filter only to bitmap candidates.
An SVG link with sizes="32x32" is skipped before the new SVG fallback can retain it. If it is the only declared icon, discovery returns /favicon.ico instead, although the SVG can scale to the required size. Classify SVG candidates before applying the bitmap size filter.

This is a careful change, and the SVG path works on Deno, Node.js, and Bun. I also checked the deno compile case: a CLI built with deno compile --allow-all --node-modules-dir=none rendered an SVG-only favicon with a fresh HOME and DENO_DIR, so the WASM is embedded and is not read from the npm cache.
Please rebase this branch onto main before merging. CHANGES.md currently conflicts because the Sacho merge driver refuses to reconcile the generated file. The inline comments cover the functional fixes.
Two smaller notes do not need action in this PR. package.json declares engines.node: ">=20.0.0", but import.meta.resolve is unflagged from Node.js 20.6.0, so users on 20.0 through 20.5 lose the feature silently; that is acceptable now that Node.js 20 is end of life, though the engines field could say so. The lockfiles also carry unrelated churn: deno.lock drops the @0.224 pins on jsr:@std/async and jsr:@std/data-structures, and pnpm-lock.yaml rewrites fourteen @stackbit peer entries. Regenerating both from a rebased main would keep the diff readable.
One pre-existing behavior is worth knowing about but not fixing here: getAsciiArt() produces an empty icon for images wider than about 77:1, including the 100 x 1 SVG case, and it does not throw.
Declare @resvg/resvg-wasm in the CLI manifests and update both
lockfiles to prepare for converting SVG favicons to bitmap images.

Initialize the WebAssembly module in loadSvgRasterizer() only when
an SVG is actually rendered, so that it is loaded lazily.
- Fit SVGs in rasterizeSvg() to DEFAULT_IMAGE_WIDTH, the size at
which the ASCII art is shown in the terminal.
- Use the first declared SVG icon instead of /favicon.ico when no
bitmap icon is declared.

Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-6.1-sol
Verify that the changes satisfy the scope of the issue:
- Rasterize an SVG favicon before readImage().
- Limit the size of a large SVG to the terminal art width.
- Fall back to rendering NodeInfo without a favicon when the SVG
cannot be rendered.
Move the console output capture into captureOutput() so that the
new tests can share it with the existing favicon test.
Claude Code reviewed and revised the tests.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
As pointed out in the review, Resvg rounds its width and height
getters, so an SVG with a tiny intrinsic size could be rendered into
a huge image instead of falling back. Throw a RangeError when either
rounded dimension is below 1, before the renderer is constructed.
Also free the probe right after reading its size, and free the
renderer and the rendered image with try/finally.
Add a regression test that expects rasterizeSvg() to reject the
reported size.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
The test only checked that the NodeInfo summary was printed, which
happens whether or not the favicon is rendered. Assert that no
terminal art is printed so that the test fails if the SVG path stops
falling back.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
The existing tests covered rasterizeSvg() and SVG detection only
partially: they exercised the width-fitting branch, and only SVG favicons served as image/svg+xml. Add a test that fits a tall SVG to the height, and one that renders an SVG served as application/octet-stream, which is recognized only by isSvg().
Also rename the existing size test so that its name shows the width branch it covers.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
An SVG link with sizes=32x32 was dropped by the minimum size filter before it could become the SVG candidate, so a page whose only icon was such an SVG fell back to /favicon.ico.
SVGs are resolution independent, so classify them first and apply the size filter only to bitmap icons.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Resvg WASM has no fonts, so an SVG favicon that consists only of text renders fully transparent, and a blank icon was shown instead of the no-favicon fallback. Throw when the rendered pixels have no non-zero alpha, so that the existing fallback runs.
Add a test for a text-only SVG, and add a <rect> to the SVGs in the size tests, which were empty and would now be rejected.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Compare only the lowercased media type, so that values such as `image/svg+xml; charset=utf-8` are recognized for both SVG and ICO.
Also check the PNG signature before sniffing for `<svg`, so that a PNG whose metadata contains `<svg` is not sent to resvg.
Changelog: none
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
When fetching or rendering the chosen favicon fails, retry `/favicon.ico` once. Move the fetch-and-render steps into `renderFavicon()` so that they can run twice, and throw on a non-OK response so that it is retried as well.
Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Recognize parameterized SVG types during icon selection.
If a page declares <link rel="icon" href="/icon" type="image/svg+xml; charset=utf-8" sizes="32x32">, this exact comparison treats the SVG as a bitmap. The size filter then discards an SVG-only favicon. Without sizes, the selector can choose that SVG ahead of a later bitmap. Compare the MIME type before its parameters, as renderFavicon() already does for response headers. The HTML and MIME standards permit parameters in this attribute. (html.spec.whatwg.org)

Review comment at @packages/cli/src/nodeinfo.ts at line 485:
Update the icon type check in the favicon selection logic to recognize
parameterized SVG MIME types. Normalize the portion of attrs.type before the
first semicolon, then trim and compare it case-insensitively with image/svg+xml
so the existing size filtering and selection behavior correctly treats those
icons as SVG.
This is a careful change, and the SVG path works on Deno, Node.js, and Bun. Thanks for the careful review. The branch is rebased onto main with the lockfiles regenerated, and the inline comments are addressed. The deno compile check was also rerun on the latest commit.
Two threads ask for confirmation: where to document that text in SVG favicons is not rendered, and which URL the /favicon.ico retry should be resolved against. The documentation will follow once those are settled.
One question about the workflow. Some CodeRabbit findings were right as is, like the dimension check, while for others your replies pointed to a better fit for the project, like falling back on a blank render instead of bundling a font.
The AI review was helpful, so it would be good to fix what can be fixed before asking for a maintainer's review. Does Fedify have a guideline for handling AI review comments, for example whether a Major finding may be fixed right away, while a Minor one should wait for a maintainer?
Thanks, the fixes look right, and most threads are already resolved. The focused CLI tests and mise run check-each cli pass on bd16a8aa1.
On the two open questions:
Document the text limitation in docs/cli.md, in the fedify nodeinfo section rather than on a separate page. One sentence next to the command description is enough: SVG favicons are rasterized, but <text> elements are not drawn because the rasterizer loads no fonts, and a text-only SVG falls back to /favicon.ico. The comment in the code can stay.
The instance URL is acceptable for the retry. It differs from the final page URL only when the page redirects to another origin, and fetchFaviconResource() follows redirects, so the common cases end up in the same place. If you change it later, the consistent approach is to resolve against the final page URL, which getFaviconUrl() already uses for its own fallback; returning { url, fallback } from it would also remove the duplicate URL construction.
On the process question: Fedify has no rule that separates Major from Minor. AI review comments are advisory, and the labels are the bot's estimate. The guidance in AI_POLICY.md and CONTRIBUTING.md is to verify each finding against the code, fix what is valid and in scope, skip the rest with a brief reason, and keep the change minimal. Ask the maintainer when a finding would change the scope or conflicts with the project's direction. Fixing the dimension guard immediately was right because it was in scope and testable. The font question was a design trade-off, so discussing it instead of applying the bot's suggestion was also right.
One new CodeRabbit comment is still valid: the SVG branch should check the PNG signature before rasterizing, so a PNG served as image/svg+xml is not sent to resvg. The one-line form is (!isPng(buffer) && (contentType === "image/svg+xml" || isSvg(buffer))).
A PNG served as image/svg+xml was sent to resvg and lost. Apply the PNG signature check to both SVG detection paths, as the ICO path already checks its content as well as its content type.

Normalize the SVG MIME hint before comparing it.
image/svg+xml; charset=utf-8 is a valid SVG media type, but this exact comparison does not recognize it. If that link is followed by a bitmap link, the SVG is returned immediately because it has no sizes, so bitmap preference is lost. Split attrs.type at ;, trim it, and lowercase it before comparison. Add a regression test for this case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The PNG-signature guard excludes PNG data from both SVG detection paths. This matches the existing review guidance.
The fedify nodeinfo section documents that <text> elements are not drawn and that text-only SVGs fall back to /favicon.ico.
Both reported changes are in place. I did not rerun tests.
