What and why

Closes #441.

Add memory.keep_superseded_days (default 180; 0 keeps replaced history indefinitely). Expiry cleanup erases old superseded facts through the existing delete cascade, including their derived data. Current and disputed facts are not selected by the retention rule. Explicit expiry of a superseded fact uses the same cascade.

Scope changes preserve the supersession timestamp. Erasing an old fact also clears its successor's previous_content only when that copy still matches the erased content.

Human review follow-up

Merged current main, including #461, without duplicating its sibling-preservation implementation. Updated docs/API.md with the retention contract and superseded_expired bulk event. Settings now says Keep replaced memories for, with a days unit and a 0 keeps them forever explanation.

How I tested it

Final source: 2ed3b0f, incorporating main fa5720f. All current validation below ran on the designated Linux workstation:

  • Memory/store regressions, including fix(memory): deleting a memory leaves a similar memory's derived data alone #461 sibling tests: 259 passed.
  • Full engine suite: 2601 passed, 3 skipped, 3 failed. The remaining failures are the previously observed Telegram/WhatsApp voice-note expectations and Docker Hub DNS failure; the full suite is not green.
  • ruff check sentient tests packaging and git diff --check: passed.
  • Desktop: npm run typecheck, 95 tests, and npm run build: passed (Node 24.13.0).
  • Original retention regressions failed before implementation. The two earlier review fixes were also reproduced before repair (new cases: 3 failed/4 passed before; memory/store suite passed afterward).

Real test

Built and ran the actual Electron app on the Linux workstation under a task-local Xvfb display, using the engine from this checkout and a dedicated empty test home seeded by all five repository seed scripts (fictional Maya persona). Tasks and messaging deliveries remained disabled. No chat/model interaction was exercised for this Settings change.

desktop/scripts/smoke.mjs settings/memory ... 1440x2400 exited 0. I inspected the screenshot: the label, default 180, days unit, and 0-retains-history explanation all display correctly. The app/engine/display stopped and the test home was deleted afterward. The desktop label is the only new runtime change in this follow-up; API documentation was checked against the config and cleanup code.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Replaced memories and information derived from them are permanently deleted after 180 days by default.
    • In Settings, change the retention period to anywhere from 0 to 3,650 days. Setting it to 0 keeps replaced-memory history indefinitely.
    • Changing a replaced memory’s scope does not restart its retention period.
    • This retention setting does not delete current or disputed memories; expired replaced memories are removed along with linked data that refers to them.

📝 Walkthrough

Memory configuration now sets a retention period for superseded facts. Cleanup removes expired superseded facts and their derived data. Tests cover retention settings, explicit expiry, and cascading cleanup.

Changes: Superseded-memory retention

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure superseded-memory retention
sentient/config/schema.py, desktop/src/features/settings/SchemaForm.tsx, docs/API.md, changes/441.added.md
keep_superseded_days defaults to 180 and accepts values from 0 to 3650. Settings and API documentation describe the setting. The release note states that current memories are not affected.
Purge superseded facts
sentient/memory/facts.py, tests/memory/test_superseded_expiry.py
Cleanup erases expired superseded facts and those past the retention period, then publishes delete events. Erasing a superseded fact clears matching previous_content on its successor. Scope changes preserve superseded facts’ retention age, and recalled-fact promotion skips them. Tests cover retention boundaries, explicit expiry, and derived-data cleanup.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to dc510

Scheduled cleanup can report a replaced memory as erased while leaving associated data behind if cascading cleanup fails. Make that cleanup recoverable before merging, unless this risk is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2ed3b

Automatic retention is appropriately limited to superseded history at selection time, but deletion is not coordinated with concurrent memory restoration or recoverable after partial cleanup failures. These gaps can remove a restored memory or leave sensitive derived data behind. The demonstrated scope is one user's memory store; no new unauthenticated access path was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Automatic retention lacks durable completion and recovery for derived-data erasure. Primary deletion commits before vector and cascade cleanup. A subsequent failure can leave summaries, insights, journal text, or workspace wording behind; cascade failures can still produce a successful erasure count. Later retention sweeps cannot retry the deleted fact because its source row and cleanup metadata are gone. The non-atomic primitive predates this PR, but its use as automatic retention enforcement for previously unexpired history is new.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Retention eligibility is checked only when IDs are selected, not when deletion occurs. The existing memory API can restore a selected fact to current or disputed while cleanup awaits other operations; erase then deletes that ID without rechecking state or age. This newly exposes memories without explicit expiry to irreversible deletion after the owner has restored them, violating the stated preservation boundary.
  • Low · security · inferred: The retention clock is not immutable after supersession. Promotion selects active short-term facts without excluding superseded state, then rewrites updated_at and removes explicit expiry before the nightly purge. A later promotion can therefore postpone deletion beyond the configured time since replacement. Promotion becomes ineligible after that update, so this does not establish an indefinitely repeatable bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated maximum cleanup scope is eligible superseded history across all scopes in one FactMemory database, plus its derived records and workspace wording. The store documents a single-user desktop model; this does not establish the isolation properties of external or shared-database deployments.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported security failure scenario is incomplete removal of sensitive derived history after backend failure or interruption. The restoration race concerns the cleanup worker exceeding its retention eligibility, not a demonstrated privilege escalation: the existing state-changing API already grants the owner memory-management authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The memory router declares the existing AUTH dependency, and the examined memory route file is unchanged by the full PR comparison. The added desktop label and bounded configuration field do not themselves introduce a new request handler. Authentication implementation and production exposure were not independently audited.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cascade and workspace exception handling favor completing primary deletion despite cleanup errors. This behavior predates automatic retention; it contains immediate exceptions but provides neither a durable pending-cleanup state nor a completion signal distinguishing primary deletion from full erasure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make retention eligibility part of an atomic deletion claim, preserve cleanup inputs in a durable retry record until derived erasure completes, and use a stable supersession timestamp rather than a general update timestamp. Report full erasure separately from primary-row removal.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#441]. keep_superseded_days defaults to 180, accepts 0 for indefinite retention, and has a Settings description. purge_superseded() selects only old superseded facts and erases them through erase(). The existing expiry path also uses the cascade for superseded facts. Tests cover retention cleanup, 0 retention, derived-data cleanup, current and disputed preservation, explicit expiry, timestamp preservation, and matching previous_content cleanup. The earlier-version deletion UI is not part of the issue's stated completion criteria or this retention implementation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#441]. The scope-timestamp fix and the promote_recalled exclusion preserve the replacement age required for retention. Cascade, documentation, Settings, release-note, and regression-test changes support the retention behavior. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Thanks @wpyaoxueros, this is a clean addition: it reuses erase(), measures age from when the memory was replaced, and 0 keeps history forever. I tested it on a real engine and the 0 / 180 behaviour works.

One real problem showed up in the live test, though. erase() finds related data by word overlap, and a replaced memory almost always shares most of its words with the memory that replaced it, which is why they conflicted in the first place. When "drives a red Honda City" expired, it also removed:

  • the MEMORY.md line of the current memory "sold her red Honda City and now rides a blue Ather…";
  • the user-model evidence pointing at that current memory;
  • even the message evidence of an unrelated "prefers Japanese cuisine" insight.

Could the retention path skip anything that still repeats the content of the memory that replaced it, and remove fact evidence only by id, never by quote? A test with similar wording ("lives in Pune" replaced by "moved from Pune to Bengaluru") would lock it in. (The same word-overlap issue affects deleting a memory by hand too. That part is on us, filed separately, so you only need to fix it for this path.)

Smaller things:

  • docs/API.md (~1677) still says replaced memories stay as history, and the new superseded_expired reason should be listed in the memory.updated event row.
  • The setting shows in Settings as "Keep superseded days". A label entry in desktop/src/features/settings/SchemaForm.tsx ("Keep replaced memories for", in days) would read better.

Happy to re-test as soon as it's updated!

Heads-up: #461 fixes #456, the sibling bug found while testing this PR. Deleting a replaced memory no longer strips the current memory's MEMORY.md line or insight evidence. erase()'s signature is unchanged and #461 only touches _cascade and below, so nothing needs to change here.

Thanks for testing this on a real engine and for fixing the shared cascade in #461. I merged current main (fa5720f) in 51e5768, so #453 includes that sibling protection without a competing cascade change.

2ed3b0f addresses the remaining requests:

  • API docs now describe the default 180-day retention, 0 for indefinite history, age since replacement, and the superseded_expired bulk event.
  • Settings uses “Keep replaced memories for”, a days unit, and the 0-retains-history explanation.

Revalidated on the Linux workstation: memory/store tests 259 passed (including the sibling cases), Ruff/whitespace checks passed, desktop typecheck/build passed, and 95 desktop tests passed. Full engine suite: 2601 passed, 3 skipped, 3 failed; the failures remain the previously observed Telegram/WhatsApp voice-note expectations and Docker Hub DNS, outside this follow-up.

The actual Electron Settings screen was captured with the repository smoke script on a seeded isolated home under Xvfb; exit 0. I inspected the 180/days/0 explanation, and attached the screenshot in the updated PR description. Test app/engine/display and temporary home were cleaned up. No chat/model interaction was exercised.

Thanks @wpyaoxueros! I re-tested on a fresh engine with this PR merged with main (#461 included):

  • replaced memories past 180 days are erased along with their derived data;
  • the memory that replaced them keeps its MEMORY.md and USER.md lines, its insight evidence and its message quotes;
  • with 0, nothing is erased.

The docs and the "Keep replaced memories for" label look great too, and CI is green.

Two small things before it can go into the merge queue:

  1. Could you add AND state != 'superseded' to promote_recalled (CodeRabbit's minor note), so promotion never rewrites updated_at on a replaced memory, and resolve that thread?
  2. The other thread, on making a failed cleanup retryable, is older than this PR and affects manual deletes too, so we're tracking it separately (link below). Feel free to reply with that and resolve it.

Then I'll approve. Great work!

The separate issue for retrying a failed cleanup is #462.

Hi @wpyaoxueros, thanks for this one. I pushed one small commit to your branch (dc510ce): promote_recalled in sentient/memory/facts.py now adds AND state != 'superseded', so promoting a recalled memory can't reset the retention clock on replaced history, plus a test for it in tests/memory/test_superseded_expiry.py. Your change is otherwise untouched. I also replied on both CodeRabbit threads and resolved them; the cleanup-retry one is tracked in #462 because it predates this PR. tests/memory passes locally (254 passed). Nothing else is needed from you here.

Thanks @wpyaoxueros! Re-tested on a real engine with this merged into main:

  • replaced memories past the retention period are erased with their derived data;
  • the memory that replaced them keeps everything (thanks to #461);
  • 0 keeps everything;
  • the "Keep replaced memories for" setting reads well.

I added the one-line promote_recalled fix with a test and closed out the two review threads (the cleanup-retry one is tracked in #462). Approving and merging. Great work!
