What and why

Closes #152 (MEM-3). Built on the fact_sources table from #429, not a second one.

Source links. Every fact points at exactly where it was said, with the sentence that says it:

facts.source_ref / fact_sources.ref   JSON SourceRef
  {kind: message, session_id, message_id, quote} the user's message in a chat (newest of the last 40 that says it)
  {kind: email|app, app, id, title, url, session_id, quote} what a chat read in an app (a held fact)
  {kind: note, folder_id, path, title, url, session_id, quote} a note from an added folder
  {kind: file, file, quote} an imported document

GET /api/memories and the new GET /api/memories/{id} return sources: [{source, ref, at, own}]. In the Memory screen each source opens what it points at: the chat scrolled to that message (/chat/<id>?message=<id>), the email or Obsidian note by its link.

Confidence and state.

confidence  1.0 typed/edited by the user · 0.9 said in a chat, onboarding · 0.8 own notes · 0.7 files, imports
            0.6 an app / anything held for review · +0.1 per new source saying it again · approve → ≥0.9 · "It's right" → 1.0
state current | disputed (the user said it isn't right) | superseded (superseded_by: the nightly tidy-up found a newer one)

Only current memories reach prompts: recall (system prompt, memory_recall, memory_search_by_source, tasks, proactivity, the user model), USER.md/MEMORY.md upkeep, the second look and dreaming read state = 'current'. Dedup still sees disputed ones, so saying one again in a chat makes it current again. supersede() now keeps the loser as history instead of deleting it. PATCH /api/memories/{id} {state: "disputed"|"current"}.

Deletes that cascade. FactMemory.erase() (REST delete, memory_forget, discard from review, scope reset, forgetting a source) removes everything derived:

 forget(fid) vector, merged copies, fact_sources, its previous wording
+summaries made of the message it came from AND repeating it (+ summary vectors)
+dreams.journal_md bullet lines repeating it → "- (a memory you deleted)"
+user_insights evidence {kind: fact, ref: id} or quoting it; an inferred insight left with none is deleted
+memory chips messages.memory_sources and task_runs.memory_sources entries for it
+USER.md / MEMORY.md its Learned bullet, and MEMORY.md bullets repeating it (app hook)

"Repeating it" is origins.says: three in five of the fact's words, besides the user's name. The chats themselves are the user's record and stay. Merges and contradictions in the nightly tidy-up still use the low-level forget.

Backfill (migration 0015). Adds the columns; facts saved before #153 from Telegram/Discord/WhatsApp or a device chat that still say conversation get channel:<app> / device:<id> and a message ref. The chat is found in the held fact's review note, the memory_remember call that saved it, or the one messaging-app/device chat message (within 30 minutes before) that says it. Existing facts get a confidence from their source.

Also fixed on the way: PATCH /api/config never reached app.memory (it kept the config from startup), so a name changed in Settings didn't reach memory. The real test caught it: deleting a fact left one insight's evidence behind. save_config now hot-applies it.

How I tested it

  • tests/memory/test_source_links.py (new, 9 tests):
    • chat fact → message ref with quote;
    • folder note ref;
    • held fact → email ref (id, url, quote);
    • imported file ref;
    • confidence per source and +0.1 when re-learned;
    • disputed and superseded facts left out of recall and the memory_recall tool, but listed on request;
    • re-saying a disputed fact makes it current;
    • correct, then delete: nothing derived survives (vector, FTS, links, summary and its vector, journal line, insight evidence and an evidence-less insight, reply chips, USER.md and MEMORY.md lines), while the chat message and unrelated memories stay;
    • backfill on a database downgraded to version 14;
    • REST routes, including the config hot-apply.
  • tests/memory/test_dreaming.py: contradiction tests now assert the loser is superseded (state, superseded_by, never recalled) instead of gone.
  • Full suite: 2503 passed, 2 skipped. ruff clean, npm run typecheck and npm run build clean.

Real test

Engine from this branch on port 8787, fresh SENTIENT_HOME, random token, driven over REST and WS. Chats on claude-code/sonnet; background extraction on ollama_chat/qwen3:8b + nomic-embed-text under the Ollama lock. The messaging app is the fake Telegram Bot API from earlier PRs, plus a local folder of notes: demo sources, not real accounts.

  1. Telegram: "I'm allergic to peanuts and my daughter Mira starts school in June", then "check my notes for who my dentist is… Dr. Mehta at Smile Care…" (ran folder_search):
    memory 1 'Maya is allergic to peanuts.' state=current confidence=0.9 source=channel:telegram
       source channel:telegram own=True ref={"kind": "message", "session_id": "a1b6…", "message_id": "1081…", "quote": "I'm allergic to peanuts and my daughter Mira starts school in June."}
    memory 3 "Maya's dentist works at Smile Care in Pune." confidence=1.0
       source channel:telegram own=True ref={"kind": "message", …, "quote": "Can you check my notes for who my dentist is?"}
       source folder:fe1b… own=False ref={"kind": "note", "title": "health", "path": "…\\notes\\health.md", …}

  2. Desktop WS chat: "I'm allergic to peanuts, so keep that in mind…" → same fact, second source, more sure:
    memory 1 confidence=1.0 with source conversation own=False ref={"kind": "message", "session_id": "8beb…", "message_id": "0683…", "quote": "Just so you have it from me directly: I'm allergic to peanuts…"}
  3. Dispute: PATCH /api/memories/2 {state: disputed} → 200 disputed. Asked "When does my daughter Mira start school?": the model called memory_recall and answered "I don't have anything saved about a daughter named Mira"; the reply's memory chips were facts 4, 3, 1 (not 2). Then {state: current} → confidence 1.0, same question: "Mira starts school in June.", chips include fact 2.
  4. Correct, then delete. First a user-model refresh (POST /api/user-model/refresh, qwen3:8b): 3 insights, one with evidence [message 7d62…, fact 4]. Then PUT /api/memories/4 "…April checkup…" → previous "…March checkup…", confidence 1.0. Then DELETE /api/memories/4:
    'checkup' before: facts 1, facts_fts 1, user_insights 2, reply memory chips 3, chat messages (the user's own record) 1
    'checkup' after:  facts 0, facts_fts 0, user_insights 0, reply memory chips 0, chat messages 1
    'April' after:    0 everywhere
    insight "Maya needs to book her dental checkup for March." deleted (its evidence was only fact 4 and a message quoting it)
    insight "Maya prefers direct communication…" kept, minus the message that quoted fact 4
    facts_vec [1, 3]

    The first attempt (fact 2) left one insight's evidence behind, because memory still had the startup config (the hot-apply bug above). The second run is with the fix. This run had no summaries, dream journal or USER.md/MEMORY.md lines to cascade into; the unit test covers those.
  5. Backfill on the real home: stopped the engine, set its three Telegram facts back to conversation, dropped the new columns, PRAGMA user_version = 14, restarted:
    snapshot sentient-snapshot-20261017-202616.zip taken before updating the database (version 14 to 15)
    fact 1 conf=0.9 source=channel:telegram (memory_remember call in the Telegram chat)
    fact 3 conf=0.9 source=channel:telegram ref {"kind": "message", "session_id": "a1b6…", "message_id": "7d62…"} (background extraction: the one Telegram message that says it)
    fact 4 conf=0.9 source=channel:telegram

Screenshots

Built app, smoke.mjs, Maya Rao seed home. A few seeded facts were given demo sources, refs, confidence and one disputed state by SQL, because the seeds have no source links. I looked at each:

  • memory?view=list&m=24: "Maya runs 5 km on Saturday and Sunday mornings". "Where it came from" lists Conversation (Sep 29, "Open the chat", quote "I do a 5 km run every Saturday and Sunday morning."), Telegram (5 days ago, "Open the chat", quote) and Your notes ("Note: Training log", quote). "How sure: Very sure 100%", green bar, "3 places told Sentient this…", "This isn't right" link. The card in the list shows a "3 sources" pill.
  • memory?view=list&m=28: a disputed memory. Yellow "You said this isn't right" alert ("Sentient keeps it here but leaves it out of chats and tasks… say it's right after all"). The list card shows a "Not right?" pill.
  • memory?view=list&m=59: a Google Calendar fact with "Dentist, Dr. Mehta" and quote "Dentist, Dr. Mehta, today 4:30 PM", "Open the chat that read it", "Not sure yet 60%" with an amber bar.
  • chat/demo-chat-telegram?message=demo-chat-telegram-05: the chat opens scrolled to "perfect thanks" instead of the bottom.

Notes for review

  • supersede() no longer deletes: superseded memories stay as history (not listed unless state=superseded|all). Nothing removes them over time yet.
  • Summaries are only cascaded when the deleted fact has a message span (facts from before this change have none), so a summary is never deleted on word overlap alone.

Checklist

  • Tests added or updated, and pytest / npm run typecheck pass locally for what I touched
  • ruff check sentient tests is clean
  • docs/API.md updated (section 7: Memory shape, GET/PATCH /api/memories/{id}, state filter, "Source links, confidence and state")
  • A changelog entry: changes/152.added.md
  • No keys, tokens or personal data in the code, tests or screenshots (fictional persona Maya Rao)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Memory details now show confidence, status, and source information, with links to original chats, emails, or notes when available.
    • Mark a memory as incorrect or restore it to current. Replaced memories remain in history, and repeated information from new sources can increase confidence.
    • Chat links can open and highlight a referenced message. If the message isn’t available, you’ll see a notice.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Deleting a memory also removes related derived information.
    • Disputed and replaced memories are excluded from relevant chat and task context.

📝 Walkthrough

Memory records now include source references, confidence, and lifecycle state. Recall and profile inputs apply state filters. Deletion removes related derived data. The API and desktop views expose memory state and source links, including navigation to cited chat messages.

Changes: Memory provenance and lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist and backfill provenance
sentient/store/schema.sql, sentient/memory/schema.sql, sentient/store/migrations/0015_fact_links.py, sentient/memory/origins.py, desktop/src/lib/types.ts
Memory data shapes and schemas add confidence, lifecycle state, and source-reference fields. Source-reading helpers build references and assign source-based confidence. The migration adds columns, backfills eligible conversation sources, and assigns confidence values to eligible legacy facts.
Capture provenance and apply lifecycle state
sentient/memory/facts.py, sentient/agent/second_look.py, sentient/evolution/service.py, sentient/memory/usermodel.py, tests/memory/test_dreaming.py, tests/memory/test_source_links.py
Fact creation and updates store source references and confidence. Recall and profile inputs apply current-state filters. Disputed facts can be included for deduplication, while superseded facts remain linked to replacements and are excluded from recall. Tests cover source capture, confidence, state transitions, and recall.
Erase derived memory data
sentient/memory/facts.py, sentient/app.py, sentient/memory/workspace.py, sentient/tools/builtin/memory_tool.py, sentient/gateway/routes/memory.py, tests/memory/test_source_links.py
The erase path removes associated derived records and invokes workspace cleanup. Memory deletion callers use this path. Tests check cleanup of related data while preserving unrelated data and original chat messages.
Expose memory state and source navigation
sentient/gateway/routes/memory.py, desktop/src/lib/api.ts, desktop/src/features/memory/*, desktop/src/features/chat/*, desktop/src/lib/types.ts, docs/API.md, changes/152.added.md, tests/memory/test_source_links.py
Memory routes and desktop controls expose state, confidence, and source links. Source links can open supported destinations. Chat URLs with a message ID locate and highlight the corresponding message. The API documentation describes memory fields, routes, deletion behavior, and state updates.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 167b8

Some memory source links still cannot open their referenced file or older chat message, leaving source navigation incomplete.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 167b8

The new memory states are not enforced across all learned context. A disputed memory can still influence later responses through an earlier inference, and failed cleanup can leave it in saved profile text. Existing access protections remain in place.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new disputed state is not authoritative across derived prompt inputs. An active inferred insight whose sole evidence is the disputed fact remains selectable: set_state only invokes workspace cleanup and cache invalidation, while insight selection checks insight status rather than supporting-fact state. Consequently, previously learned material can continue entering system context after the user disputes it. Separately, workspace cleanup failures are suppressed after the state is committed, and repeating the disputed request skips cleanup. Current-only fact recall does not close either derived-input path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure concerns learned data within one gateway instance: stored facts, derived insights, and workspace text can affect later conversations. Existing incognito and personal-scope gates constrain which context enters a conversation. No new cross-tenant access or credential authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A fact can first support an active inferred insight, then be disputed by the user. The fact leaves ordinary recall, but its insight remains active and can be selected for subsequent system context without rechecking the supporting fact. This is continued use of revoked context; it does not establish that an attacker can bypass the existing initial-review controls.
  • observed — Task execution persists recalled text in checkpoint messages and reuses those messages on resume. Erasure now removes attribution metadata but does not rewrite checkpoint text. The task executor is unchanged against the PR base, so this retention path is not classified as a newly introduced disclosure concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Insight creation retains an outside-content trust distinction: operations supported only by outside material create pending insights rather than immediately active ones. Current-only recall and current-only user-model evidence gathering also remain effective for fresh fact reads. These controls do not invalidate insights created before a fact is disputed.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The new dispute transition can strand inconsistent privacy state after a filesystem failure: the database says disputed while profile text remains available to ordinary prompt snapshots. Cleanup errors are logged rather than surfaced, and repeating the same state request does not retry cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make supporting-fact lifecycle authoritative for inferred context, while preserving independently confirmed user data. Use durable, idempotent cleanup or read-time exclusion so interrupted transitions and repeated requests can converge without continuing to consume revoked material.
  • proposed — Define erasure ownership across historical versions and persisted task context. In particular, specify whether deleting a superseded record must clear its text from the surviving record's previous_content and whether resumed tasks must rebuild recalled context. Previous-content and checkpoint retention predate this PR; these are lifecycle-hardening proposals, not claims of newly introduced disclosure.

Explanation

The changed files support Issue #152. Chat message navigation supports clickable source references. The API, migration, memory, workspace, UI, documentation, and tests implement or validate source links, confidence, states, current-only consumers, superseded history, and cascading deletion. Config hot-application supports the tested memory cleanup behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #152 requires exact clickable source spans for facts, including task runs. At the reviewed head, sentient/memory/origins.py handles chat, app, channel, device, and folder sources. Its spans() function has no task-run reference or destination. The new tests cover chat messages, email, notes, and files, but no task-run source. The implementation does cover confidence, states, current-only recall, superseded history, and cascading deletion for the covered sources.

Resolution

Add task-run provenance to source collection, persistence, API responses, and SourceLinks navigation. Add an automated test for a task-derived fact with an exact clickable source. Verify that deletion removes all task-run-derived records for that fact.

A memory that becomes disputed or superseded also leaves USER.md and MEMORY.md,
superseded history is found by its words in the Memory search, a chat fact no
single message says points at the chat only, and the backfill's confidence
follows the same order as new memories.
