Closes #307

Reproduced on main

In a launched, visible Edge profile, driven by the real engine and claude-code/sonnet, three download links on a local page:

  • a plain download link and a link to a file sent as an attachment: fine, the page stays and the file is reported;
  • a file link with target="_blank": the click result pointed at a blank page. The link opens a new tab, the click makes it the active page, and the download starts from it, so the result said "url": "" (the blank tab) while the real tab stayed on the site. Edge's downloads hub tab (Issue 87 browser downloads #202) appears in the same moment, and a new tab that is blank when the click reads it can be the hub before it navigates. That is the "page switched to about:blank / downloads-hub" seen in the fix(browser): preserve user downloads when attached #295 review: the tab itself is never navigated, but Sentient reported and kept working in the wrong one.

Engine on main, stored tool results:

{"clicked": "[e1] link \"Download the Q3 report\" -> /files/q3-report.csv", "url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "downloads_in_progress": ["q3-report.csv"]}
{"clicked": "[e2] link \"Get the Q3 summary\" -> /attachment/q3-summary.txt", "url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "downloads": ["downloads/q3-summary.txt"]}
{"clicked": "[e3] link \"Open the Q3 notes\" -> /attachment/q3-notes.txt", "url": "", "downloads": ["downloads/q3-notes.txt"]}

The new live test below fails on main the same way: AssertionError: assert '' == 'http://127.0...load-tab.html'.

Fix

browser_click: when the tab the click made active holds no page (it closed again, it is Edge's downloads hub, or it is blank and a download started from it), the clicked page stays active, url is that page, and there is no new_tab. A blank new tab gets up to 3 s (DOWNLOAD_TAB_WAIT_S) to show a page, a download or close, so a normal target="_blank" link still opens and switches to its tab. docs/API.md (browser_click) says so.

Real test after the fix (engine on port 8788, claude-code/sonnet, launched Edge, visible window)

Asked: "Open http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html in the browser and download the Q3 report, then the Q3 summary, then the Q3 notes, clicking each link on that page." Each click approved over REST.

tool_result browser_click {"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "downloads_in_progress": ["q3-report.csv"]}
tool_result browser_snapshot {"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "title": "Maya's reports", "downloads": ["downloads/q3-report.csv"]}
tool_result browser_click {"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "downloads": ["downloads/q3-summary.txt"]}
tool_result browser_click {"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "downloads": ["downloads/q3-notes.txt"]}
done: Done - saved three files: q3-report.csv, q3-summary.txt, and q3-notes.txt. The browser is still on http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html.
browser status: tabs [{"url": "http://127.0.0.1:8711/reports.html", "title": "Maya's reports", "active": true}]
files/downloads: q3-notes.txt (32 B, "Notes: hire one designer in Q4."), q3-report.csv, q3-summary.txt
site log: GET /reports.html, /files/q3-report.csv, /attachment/q3-summary.txt, /attachment/q3-notes.txt

The live view screenshot (/api/browser/screenshot) after the three downloads shows the "Maya's reports" page with its three links. Before the change I also drove BrowserService directly in headed Edge: plain and attachment links kept the page, the hub tab was marked internal, and a first browser_open of a direct download URL leaves a fresh tab at about:blank (that is Chromium's normal behaviour for a navigation that becomes a download; the next browser_open works as usual).

Checks

  • pytest -q: 2481 passed, 2 skipped. New: test_download_from_a_new_tab_link_keeps_the_page (live, headless, local site; fails on main) and test_a_click_that_only_opened_a_download_tab_stays_on_the_page (closed tab, hub, real page, blank tab without and with a download).
  • ruff check: clean. tests/browser: 135 passed.

After review (round 1)

With another tab open, the blank download tab can close after the click has returned; the old fallback then picked the last tab (here: a help page). New tabs now remember the tab that was active when they opened (their opener when known) and go back to it when they close or turn out to be the downloads hub; the click also restores the clicked page when an older tab took over. New live test test_download_tab_link_with_another_tab_open_keeps_the_clicked_page (ran 6 times in a row, all green) and unit test test_a_closed_or_hub_tab_goes_back_to_the_tab_it_came_from. Checked again in headed Edge with the hub and a second tab:

help click: http://127.0.0.1:53361/help.html new_tab True
download click: {'url': 'http://127.0.0.1:53361/download-tab.html', 'new_tab': None, 'downloads': ['downloads/direct-report.txt']}
tabs: download-tab.html (active), help.html, edge://downloads-hub/ (internal)
snapshot: http://127.0.0.1:53361/download-tab.html

pytest -q: 2483 passed, 2 skipped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Clicking a download link that opens in a new tab now keeps the clicked page active instead of leaving a blank page. The download result reports the saved file.
    • When a download-only tab closes or opens the browser’s downloads hub, the browser returns to the page that opened it when that page is still available.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how new tabs and download-only pages are handled when clicking links.

A link with target=_blank to a file opens a blank tab the download starts
from, and Edge opens its downloads hub as a tab. The click made that tab
active and reported its empty URL. Such a tab is no longer made active: the
clicked page stays, and the saved file is reported.

📝 Walkthrough

Browser click handling now identifies download-only tabs, restores the clicked page when needed, and reports a new tab only when a different usable tab remains active. Tests and documentation cover download links and tab restoration.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Suggested reviewers: user-michal-123

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 97631

This change aims to keep users on the clicked page for downloads while preserving navigation to real new pages. The available evidence identifies no established issue requiring a merge hold.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 97631

The fix improves download-tab handling, but an unrelated concurrent download can make a genuine new page appear download-only. This can leave its eventual destination outside the normal blocked-site check. The risk is timing-dependent and limited to the current browser context; existing click approvals remain in place.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Download-only classification does not preserve download-to-tab identity. If a genuine new tab remains blank while another tracked page starts a download, browser_click can restore the originating page before checking the new tab's destination. A later blocked destination can consequently remain in the background without the post-click rejection or blanking that the base attempted on that tab. This adds a policy-enforcement escape path to an existing asynchronous-navigation weakness; it is not a verified new network-access capability.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified path affects tab selection and configured domain containment within the current browser context. It requires a pending blank destination and a newly observed download from another tracked page. Attached-browser listener restrictions narrow eligible download sources, but do not provide per-tab attribution within the shared task set.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Page-controlled timing can combine a delayed new-tab destination with a separate download to trigger origin restoration. The destination then loses the post-click check because enforcement follows the restored page. Unlike the base, this path abandons the candidate before settling it. The base nevertheless already allowed navigation after a blank-page check, so the concern is weakened post-click containment, not wholly new destination reachability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The classifier retains a destination that is already nonblank before consulting download state. Original-click approval checks remain in place, and an explicit later switch to a disallowed HTTP(S) tab is rejected. These controls limit the concern but do not evaluate a suppressed tab's later background navigation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new origin mapping is cleared during normal context teardown and unexpected context closure. Child mappings are removed during closure or internal-page classification, bounding their lifecycle to the browser context rather than persistent profile state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Correlate download-start evidence with the candidate tab or its navigation, and keep destination-policy evaluation independent of which tab is reported as active. This would avoid using unrelated shared download state to terminate a destination's policy evaluation.

Explanation

Issue #307 requires reproducing or ruling out the report on main, keeping the original page active when a download tab or Edge downloads hub takes focus, and adding a live test. The PR reports reproducing the wrong-page result on main. In service.py, browser_click treats a closed tab, downloads hub, or blank tab with a download as download-only and restores the clicked page. Tab opener tracking also returns to the originating page when a tab closes or becomes the hub. The live tests cover a target=_blank download and the case with another tab open. Unit tests cover closed tabs, the hub, and opener restoration. The PR also reports headed Edge verification.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The browser service changes, tests, API documentation, and change note all support issue #307. Opener tracking addresses the same page-restoration behavior when other tabs are open. The whole-PR diff shows no unrelated changes.

A rabbit clicks a link at night,
A download starts, but tabs stay right.
The old page waits, still clear in view,
The saved file arrives there too.
The rabbit thumps a happy beat,
Then hops away on quiet feet.

With other tabs open, the blank tab of a file link (or Edge's downloads hub)
could close after the click returned and leave the last tab active. New tabs
now remember the tab that was active when they opened and go back to it.

Fixed in the latest commit. The click restores the clicked page when an older tab took over, and since the blank tab can close after the click returns, new tabs now remember the tab that was active when they opened and _on_page_closed / _mark_internal_page go back to it instead of the last tab. New live test with a second tab open (6 runs green) and a unit test; checked again in headed Edge with the downloads hub and a second tab.

…the download fallback

The clicked page is only restored while it is still open, and a real page that

Round 2 handled in the latest commit: the clicked page is only restored while it is still open (the whole branch is guarded), and after the check the active tab is read again, so a real page that opened in yet another new tab meanwhile stays active. tests/browser 137 passed (the new-tab live tests 3 more runs green), full suite 2483 passed, and the headed Edge check with the downloads hub and a second tab still reports and stays on the clicked page.
