What and why

Closes #414.

Contributors can now claim issues themselves, and pull requests that are waiting on their author get a gentle, predictable follow-up instead of sitting for weeks.

  • /assign and /unassign (.github/workflows/assign.yaml, logic in .github/scripts/assign.js). A comment that is exactly /assign on an open issue assigns the commenter if nobody has it, and replies "Assigned to you. Open a PR within a week or comment if you need more time." If someone has it, it replies, kindly, with who. /unassign from the assignee hands it back. PR comments and bot comments are ignored. It needs only issues: write, pins actions/github-script to the v9.0.0 commit, and only compares the comment with those two strings: nothing from the comment is run or echoed.
  • Daily stale check (.github/workflows/stale.yaml, logic in .github/scripts/stale.js), for open, non-draft PRs from anyone but itsskofficial, Kabeer2004 and dependabot:
    • waiting = the latest approving/dismissing/changes-requested review from a human other than the author is CHANGES_REQUESTED, and the author has not pushed (commit or force push) or commented (comment, review reply, line comment) since. Bot reviews such as CodeRabbit's don't reset or start the clock.
    • 7 days: label waiting on author + one friendly nudge. At most one nudge comment per PR, ever: a PR that has ever had the bot's nudge (found by a hidden marker in the comment) or the waiting on author label (now, or a labeled event in its history) never gets another comment; if it is waiting again later, the label just comes back quietly. A PR that already has the label (for example added by hand) is never nudged.
    • 21 days: close with a kind note and unassign the author from the issues the PR closes. The close also needs the last nudge or labeling to be at least 7 days old, so nobody is closed without a week's warning.
    • The author pushing or commenting removes the label on the next daily run.
    • Issues claimed with /assign (assigned by github-actions[bot]) by a non-maintainer, with no open PR from them and no comment from them: ping at 14 days, unassign with a note at 21 (again at least 7 days after the ping). Issues a maintainer assigned by hand are left alone.
  • The waiting on author label is created (done on the repo already; the bot also creates it if missing).
  • .github/workflows/bot-scripts.yaml runs the unit tests (node --test, no packages) when the bot scripts change. It is a separate file so ci.yaml stays untouched.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md explains /assign, /unassign and the stale policy in plain words.

Goes live on merge

Changed at the owner's request: the daily scheduled run (06:23 UTC) acts for real from the first run after merge. The manual run keeps its dry_run input, ticked by default, for checks. To pause the daily run without a code change, set the repository variable STALE_BOT_DRY_RUN to true (Settings > Secrets and variables > Actions > Variables). A PR that changes the stale bot still gets a dry run against the real repo as a preview.

What the first live run will do, going by the dry run below: label #249 and post its one nudge. Nothing else; #338's nudge follows on 20 Oct.

How I tested it

node --test ".github/scripts/*.test.js": 23 tests pass locally and in the new "Bot scripts" check. They cover the exact-match rule, every /assign / /unassign reply, PR and bot comments being ignored, a silently dropped assignment, the PR waiting rules (bot reviews, commits, force pushes, comments, review replies, approvals), the 7/21-day and 14/21-day timelines with the week of warning, a full dry run (no writes at all) and live run against a fake GitHub, two quick /assigns racing, a reopened PR not being closed again, and the one-nudge-ever guard (earlier nudge, label added by hand, label with no history).

Real test

1. Stale check, dry run against this repository. A manual workflow_dispatch run is only possible once the workflow is on main, so this is the same workflow run as this PR's stale check, re-run at 12:24 UTC on 17 Oct (just after #249 reached 7 days) on the final code (run):

Dry run: nothing on GitHub will change.
none PR #412 (TanmayNileshShinde): no open request for changes
none PR #411 (AdarshKumar12345): no open request for changes
none PR #407 (syedmustafan): author pushed or replied since changes asked by itsskofficial on 2026-10-17
none PR #406 (syedmustafan): author pushed or replied since changes asked by itsskofficial on 2026-10-17
wait PR #338 (anushkaanair): waiting 4.1 days; nudge due 2026-10-20 (changes asked by itsskofficial on 2026-10-13)
[dry run] would nudge PR #249 (wanjinhao1): waiting 7 days (changes asked by itsskofficial on 2026-10-10)
none issue #284 (abhinavrastogi2627): not claimed with /assign
none issue #256 (n-o-t-mugen): not claimed with /assign
none issue #95 (anushkaanair): not claimed with /assign

#249 and #338 are the two PRs waiting on their authors. #249 (changes requested 10 Oct, 12:22 UTC) is now a nudge candidate; #338 (13 Oct) has waited 4 days, so its nudge is due on 20 Oct. #406 and #407 are correctly not waiting: CodeRabbit reviewed after the maintainer, but bot reviews don't count, and the author pushed afterwards. The three assigned issues were assigned by a maintainer by hand, so the claim rules leave them alone. (An earlier run at 09:19 UTC listed #249 as "waiting 6.8 days; nudge due 2026-10-17".)

2. /assign on a real GitHub repo: a fork (itsskofficial/Sentient) with this branch as its default branch and only the "Claim issues" workflow enabled, on throwaway issue itsskofficial#1 and PR itsskofficial#2 (both closed now):

Comment Bot reply Result
/assign "Assigned to you. Open a PR within a week or comment if you need more time." assigned (timeline: assigned by github-actions[bot])
/assign again "This one is already assigned to you. ..." unchanged
/unassign "Unassigned you. Thanks for letting us know! The issue is free for someone else now." unassigned
/unassign again "Nobody is assigned to this issue, so there is nothing to unassign. ..." unchanged
please /assign me later none (log: Not a command.) unchanged
a shell-mangled C:/Program Files/Git/assign none (log: Not a command.) unchanged
/assign on the PR none: the job was skipped unchanged

The "someone else has it" reply can't be produced on a fork with one account; it is covered by the unit tests.

After CodeRabbit's review (handler reads the live issue instead of the comment's snapshot, job-level concurrency, exact-command job condition, reopens count as activity), rerun on the fork at ec5ab27:

Comment Result
What does /assign do? job skipped (no longer enters the claim queue)
/assign followed by a newline assigned, "Assigned to you. ..."
/unassign unassigned, "Unassigned you. ..."
/assign on the issue after closing it "This issue is closed, so there is nothing to pick up here. ..." (read from the live issue)

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds /assign and /unassign issue-comment handling and scheduled checks for inactive issue claims and pull requests awaiting author changes. It adds GitHub Actions workflows, Node.js tests, and contributor guidance for the commands and inactivity timelines.

Changes: Issue claiming and stale-item automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Issue claim commands
.github/scripts/assign.js, .github/scripts/assign.test.js, .github/workflows/assign.yaml, CONTRIBUTING.md
The handler accepts exact /assign and /unassign commands on issue comments. It applies assignment changes only when issue and assignee conditions permit. Tests cover parsing, decisions, API calls, and ignored comments. The workflow invokes the handler for issue comments.
Pull-request inactivity lifecycle
.github/scripts/stale.js, .github/scripts/stale.test.js, .github/workflows/stale.yaml, .github/workflows/bot-scripts.yaml, CONTRIBUTING.md
The stale runner evaluates reviews and author activity on eligible open pull requests. It labels and nudges after 7 days, then closes only after both 21 days from the review and 7 days from the nudge. On closure, it removes the author from assigned linked issues.
Inactive issue-claim lifecycle
.github/scripts/stale.js, .github/scripts/stale.test.js, CONTRIBUTING.md
The stale runner checks eligible /assign claims, excluding assignees with an open pull request. It pings after 14 inactive days and unassigns only after both 21 days of inactivity and 7 days since the ping. Tests cover claim facts and timing.
Script test workflow
.github/workflows/bot-scripts.yaml
The pull-request workflow runs the Node.js script tests when the scripts or listed workflows change.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3e9ac

Once merged, the daily stale check will start closing pull requests and unassigning contributors without an explicit opt-in, although the stated intent is dry-run by default. Switch the schedule to an explicit live opt-in before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3e9ac

The stale checker accepts reviews without establishing the reviewer's maintenance authority, potentially allowing another participant to initiate automated closure and assignment removal. Warning periods and author activity limit this exposure. Ownership cleanup can also partially complete before closure fails. Actual live-run settings remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A human review becomes authority for automated closure without checking reviewer permission, association or maintainer status. An actor permitted to submit CHANGES_REQUESTED but not close another contributor's PR could initiate closure and removal of that author's linked issue assignments. The 21-day inactivity and seven-day warning gates delay the action but do not authorize its initiator.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: Closure removes linked issue assignments before posting the closure note and closing the PR. An API failure or interruption can leave an open PR with ownership already released. Subsequent author activity can cancel closure without restoring those assignments, and no recovery transition reconciles this partially completed ownership change.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The stale workflow requests repository issue and PR write permissions and scans all open resources before applying exemptions. PR-close cleanup removes the PR author's assignments from queried linked issues without requiring those assignments to originate from /assign.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A participant able to submit a qualifying human review can influence the stale lifecycle without proving maintenance authority: CHANGES_REQUESTED can initiate eventual closure, while a later approval can cancel waiting. Unauthorized closure remains conditional on review permissions, live execution and absence of subsequent author activity; it was not demonstrated against the deployed repository.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Issue claiming uses fixed-string parsing, event-provided identity, a fresh ownership read and per-issue workflow concurrency. Stale closure excludes drafts, protected maintainer authors and bots, recognizes author activity, authenticates bot warning comments and requires inactivity plus warning grace. These controls do not establish reviewer authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Sequential reruns can retry unfinished PR closures, but cannot guarantee restoration of released issue ownership. Reopening or author activity ends waiting rather than compensating prior removals, so recovery depends on manual reassignment and continued issue availability.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require explicit reviewer authorization before reviews can initiate or cancel privileged lifecycle actions. Make closure and ownership cleanup a recoverable transition with current-state revalidation, durable progress and reconciliation after interruption.
  • proposed — Separate PR previews into a read-only job and reserve write tokens for trusted live execution. The current dryRun guard constrains the reviewed implementation, but is not a capability boundary against modified preview code; fork token restrictions and same-repository actors' existing authority must be assessed separately.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The implementation covers the /assign and /unassign requirements in [#414]. It also implements the stale PR and claim rules, tests, and documentation. However, the scheduled workflow does not satisfy [#414]'s dry-run-by-default requirement. .github/workflows/stale.yaml sets dryRun to false for scheduled runs unless STALE_BOT_DRY_RUN equals "true". A missing variable therefore enables writes. This also contradicts the PR description, which says scheduled runs require STALE_BOT_LIVE to be true.

Resolution

Make scheduled runs dry runs when no opt-in variable is set. Use the documented STALE_BOT_LIVE opt-in, or invert the existing variable condition so only an explicit live setting enables writes. Update the workflow comments and tests or verification to cover the default scheduled path.
