Sonas

sonas Irish noun: "happiness, good luck, good fortune". Etymology: Middle Irish sonus ("prosperity, happiness")

Sonas aims to be the Framework of IDEs — a modular and malleable development environment that YOU can shape for YOUR needs.

Here are some example environments that you would be able to craft using Sonas:

  • Minecraft plugin / mod development
  • Unity game scripting development
  • Framework-specific web development
  • Desktop app development
  • Backend service development (w/ API client module)
  • Database management & development
  • Model training using Jupyter notebooks (.ipynb)
  • Node-based automation workflow development
  • Git version control client
  • GitHub version control client
  • Notion-like dashboard development
  • Obsidian-like graph-based Markdown note-taking

Each feature should be modular and malleable, with incremental difficulty of modification for end users.
Modules should fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, both in logic and in UI.

To build and ship fast enough for dogfooding release, I will only focus on the desktop app development (framework specific).

Ideas for Modular Widgets

  • Music / ambience / vinyl player
  • Plant / forest that grows every time a task is completed
  • Gamified task tracking system (similar to Linear), with visible progress bar that motivates the user to complete tasks (like a video game quest)
  • Local / offline docs or whitelisted browser-based docs
  • Git history visualization (horizontal and vertical)

Development

Run the setup script to install dependencies for developing Sonas.

Linux & macOS

chmod +x setup.sh
./setup.sh

Then run:

bun tauri dev
