feat: refine hot topics headlines and flame - #1436
Make Hot topics easier to scan and give its flame the same orange as the logo. Titles are bold, available recaps appear as smaller muted single-line previews, and the flame gently flickers for one second on a five-second cycle.
Changes
Keep the logo color, headline/recap experiment, seed fixtures, and flame animation in four separate commits so the experiments can be reverted independently.
Reuse the headline page's existing recap expiry and hidden-source checks for sidebar previews. Recaps remain escaped text and are omitted when unavailable, expired, or associated with muted/blocked sources.
Add five seeded headlines with linked recent discussions: four with recaps and one without. HeadlineSeeder can also run independently.
Animate only SVG paths, leaving the icon box and heading fixed. Respect reduced-motion preferences; no JavaScript timers or new dependencies.
Address all five review findings: batch recap visibility queries, refresh cached previews after safety and delete/restore actions, reuse seeded headline identities, and embed seeded discussions through the existing local provider.
Preserve full feed replacement and inbox navigation when blocking from Remotes; refresh recaps after success so blocked posts disappear without requesting a forbidden conversation URL.
Address the follow-up seeder finding: reuse fixture authors and posts so reruns keep exactly two discussions per topic rather than inflating topic counts. Refresh posting timestamps so the same examples remain available after the ranking window expires.
Validation
bun run build — passed.
composer test:lint — passed, with existing floating-promise warnings in unrelated tests.
composer test:types — passed.
composer test:type-coverage — passed, 100%.
bun run test:unit — 223 passed.
bunx vp test tests/Unit/HotTopics.test.tsx — 3 passed.
Chromium: inspected light/dark rendering at 1440×900 and 1366×650; inspected motion recordings, truncation, long headlines, and the missing-recap state. Measured zero layout shift during animation. Runtime animation duration is 5,000 ms; reduced-motion mode produces zero flame animations in both themes.
At 390×844, the sidebar remains hidden and neither theme overflows horizontally. This was desktop Chromium viewport emulation, not device testing. No mobile interaction changed.
Browser regression checks: mute/block removes four recap previews and unmute/unblock restores them; header and active-row blocking returns to the inbox without failed requests; dock blocking removes already-loaded posts (two to zero); stashing an active organization drops its conversation heading. Fixtures were restored after testing.
php vendor/bin/pest tests/Feature/DatabaseSeederTest.php tests/Feature/Controllers/HeadlineControllerTest.php --compact — 29 passed, 356 assertions. Before the fix, both rerun cases failed with four linked discussions per topic instead of two. After the fix, fixture identities/counts remain stable and all five topics remain available after a ten-hour gap.
Independent review
Independent read-only review: PASS, no unresolved blockers, for base d99cd27223b636ac3cf559a6b55ad2dc4f6cbc3e and head 9e8876528eac9fce2190d2edf803757ef06b9eb3.
Reviewed the full scope for correctness, regressions, privacy, architecture, and meaningful tests. The final reviewer independently checked validation logs and the dock-block recording, confirming loaded posts disappear after blocking. Earlier appearance/flame evidence is unchanged. The final reviewer required the last mandatory PHP rerun to pass before publication; it completed successfully. Inspection media is intentionally omitted from this text-only PR.
The follow-up review verified that only the seeder and regression test changed from the prior approved head, with the whole-PR approval carried forward. It checked stable fixture reuse and the ten-hour rerun regression. UI source and visual evidence are unchanged.
Limitations
No physical-device or simulator testing; the changed component is desktop-only.
The reviewer could not analyze the dark-theme video because of a media-tool limit. Dark-theme motion, reduced-motion behavior, viewport checks, and layout-shift measurements were verified by the implementer; the reviewer independently verified light-theme motion and both static themes.
Conversation network responses, recap counts, and organization-stash results were checked by the implementer. The final recording independently establishes loaded-post removal, not recap counts or HTTP responses. The dock-open state for the recap contributor was seeded because that fixture does not accept messages.
An initial full run exposed an unrelated intermittent mention-suggestion test failure, which passed unchanged on rerun. Another run overlapped an asset rebuild and failed from unavailable generated assets. The final full run used stable assets and passed without exclusions.
Hosted CI on the preceding head failed the unchanged org-call test at tests/Feature/Controllers/OrgCallControllerTest.php:66: the same two author IDs were returned in reverse order by a query without orderBy. That test passed in complete local runs on the same revision. It is flagged separately, not changed in this PR; CI will run again for the updated head.
Local checks are complete; hosted CI and review follow-ups are monitored for the updated head. No merge or deployment is requested by this PR.

New Features
Hot topics now display bold headlines and, when available, a short recap beneath each headline.
The hot topics icon includes a subtle flicker animation.
Bug Fixes
Recaps appear only when recent and consistent with contributions visible to the viewer.
Hot topics refresh after blocking, unblocking, muting, or unmuting someone, so the sidebar reflects updated visibility settings.
Hot-topic data now includes summaries that pass freshness and linked-commit visibility checks. The sidebar displays available summaries below topic headlines. The headline page uses the same summary query, and selected user actions reload hot-topic data.

This PR refines the desktop Hot topics sidebar with clearer headlines, optional recap previews, and an orange animated flame. It shares the headline page’s recap visibility checks and adds local fixtures.
Changes:
Add bold titles and muted, single-line recaps with shared expiry and hidden-source checks.
Match the flame to the logo color and add a reduced-motion-aware flicker.
Seed five topics and extend backend and frontend tests.

Addressed and folded into the recap commit. HeadlineSummaryQuery::getMany batches expiry and hidden-source checks for all selected headlines; single-headline reads reuse it. The sidebar regression test asserts two database queries for five recaps. Privacy/expiry cases and the complete PHP suite pass (5,478 tests, 100% coverage).

Addressed and folded into the recap commit. commitMutationOptions explicitly includes hotTopics for deletion/restoration refreshes, so the once-cached sidebar recap updates alongside the headline page. The existing options regression test now covers the requested prop; JavaScript tests pass (223 total).

Addressed and folded into the seed-fixtures commit. New seeded discussions receive embeddings through UpdateCommitEmbedding, using the existing network-free local provider. Both seeder cases now request all five real headline pages and assert that their linked discussions are returned. Targeted seeder/headline/embedding tests passed, as did the full suite.

Recalculate headline commit scores after a standalone seed rerun.
HeadlineSeeder::run() updates created_at on existing commits but does not recalculate hot_score. A standalone run of this seeder can leave seeded discussions ranked by their old posting time in Hot topics and Trending. A full DatabaseSeeder run rescores these commits, so the issue limits to running HeadlineSeeder by itself.
Call UpdateCommitHotScores after each save. The action defers its work until the seeder transaction commits.
