fix: keep a click on a button that moved under a still pointer - #1294
#1256 made a tooltip arm synchronously when the pointer enters its trigger, so a click that follows the pointer onto a button is not lost. One case is still lost: a button that arrives under a pointer that is not moving. That happens when you scroll the log with the wheel, when a thread expands, or when the composer grows, and then click without moving the mouse. The browser then sends the boundary events (pointerover, pointerenter) together with the press. Arming on pointerenter mounts the trigger again in the middle of that press, so the pointerdown is dropped and no click fires. The first click on Reply, Quote, Star, Add poll and the other ActionTooltip buttons does nothing. The second click works.
Pointer events recorded in Chrome for one such click on the composer's "Add poll" button, on production:
pointerover Add poll#1 ← old trigger
pointerover Add poll#2 ← remounted by arming on pointerenter
pointerenter Add poll#2
pointerup Add poll#2 ← no pointerdown, mousedown or click
mouseup Add poll#2
Changes
An unarmed trigger now arms on pointermove instead of pointerenter. A press on a still pointer brings no move, so the button stays mounted and the click goes through. The tooltip then arms on the next move.
The trigger also doesn't arm while a button is held (event.buttons === 0). Otherwise a press that jitters, as a pen often does, could mount the trigger again between pointerdown and pointerup.
Hover opens one pointermove later. Radix opens a tooltip on its trigger's pointermove. Before this change, pointerenter armed the trigger and the first move opened the tooltip. Now the first move arms it, and the next move opens it, about one frame later, which nobody can see. Arming still uses flushSync, so the case fix: keep a click landing as a tooltip arms on its button #1256 fixed (move, then click right away) is still covered.
When the pointer arms a trigger that already holds the focus, the trigger takes the focus back after it mounts again. Without this, a click that focused a button under a still pointer would lose that focus to the document on the next move. Keyboard arming already uses this path.
Keyboard focus arming and the touch exclusion are unchanged. A caller's onPointerEnter now passes through ...props in both branches.
Validation
In Chrome (the Claude desktop app's built-in Chromium browser), I clicked without moving the pointer first, which is the press-with-boundary-events case:
production: the first click on "Add poll" in the composer and on "Reply" on a commit page did nothing. It failed every time I tried. The second click worked.
This branch: both open on the first click.
Hovering and then clicking still works. Hovering "Reply" still shows its tooltip ("Reply" with the r shortcut).
bun run test:lint (exit 0, no new warnings), bun run test:types, and bun run test:unit (212/212 pass) all pass locally. No PHP change, so the Pest, Pint, Rector and PHPStan suites don't apply.
Visual evidence
Not applicable: the tooltip looks the same and opens at the same moment. Only when the trigger is mounted again changes. The pointer-event trace above shows the before state.
Device verification
Desktop Chrome (Chromium in the Claude desktop app) on macOS. No mobile interaction changes: touch never arms a tooltip, before or after this change.
Independent review
A separate Claude agent reviewed base 5b5afe1a and head 2f84e21a: CODE: PASS. VISUAL: N/A, because nothing visible changes, only when the trigger is mounted again. It suggested one hardening step, not arming while a button is held, and it is in head f0d9de86. Hover tooltips and first-click Reply were checked again in the browser after that change.
Not checked in WebKit or Firefox. Both also dispatch boundary events on a press when the element under a still pointer has changed, and this fix doesn't depend on the browser.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Tooltips now activate after a non-touch pointer moves over the trigger without buttons pressed, rather than immediately on pointer entry. This helps prevent a tooltip from appearing when its trigger appears beneath a pressed pointer.
If the trigger had focus when the tooltip was armed, focus is restored when the tooltip appears.

Walkthrough
TooltipTrigger now arms an unmounted tooltip on eligible pointer movement instead of pointer entry. It forwards the pointer-move handler and records whether focus is within the trigger so the remounted trigger can restore focus.
The unmounted trigger forwards the pointer-move handler and arms only for non-touch movement with no buttons pressed. It records whether focus is within the trigger. The mounted trigger also receives the pointer-move handler.
A single-move hover can leave tooltips closed until the pointer moves again, causing a localized UI regression.

- Line 119: Update the pointer-movement arming path guarded by event.pointerType
and event.buttons so replacing the trigger with arm(false) restores focus to its
previously focused descendant. Preserve the existing pointer arming behavior
while ensuring focus remains available for subsequent keyboard navigation.
- Line 114: Update the onPointerMove handler so arming the trigger with
arming.arm(false) also preserves the first eligible pointer move and opens the
tooltip without waiting for another event; keep the existing eligibility checks
intact.

…oltip
A click on a button that moved under a still pointer focuses it while its
tooltip stays unarmed. The next move mounted the trigger again and dropped
that focus to the document. Arming by pointer now hands the focus back to
the trigger mounted again, as keyboard arming already does.
