fix: resolve bare repositories to their own config and copy root - #224
Running git gtr new inside a bare repository can resolve git rev-parse --git-common-dir (.) to the parent directory, then read that parent's .gtrconfig and copy its files into a worktree.
Resolve bare repositories to their common Git directory itself. Query the common directory's bare status so linked worktrees use the same root, including bare repositories named .git. Ignore inherited GIT_WORK_TREE and GIT_COMMON_DIR only for the bare-status probe, preserving the caller's environment for other Git commands. Preserve the existing root-resolution behavior for normal repositories.
Add eleven regression tests covering config and copy isolation, default and relative worktree locations, relative/absolute GIT_DIR, bare linked worktrees, and normal-repository controls. Document the CLI's bare-repository config and copy locations.
Motivation
Related to VULN-602. The parent-config read and benign parent-file copy reproduced on 2d4852d; the existing copy-confinement checks trust the source root supplied by the resolver. No privilege escalation or unapproved hook execution was demonstrated.
After the review fix: bats tests/bare_repositories.bats tests/config.bats tests/cmd_create_integration.bats — 54 passed.
ShellCheck across the CI script targets, scripts/generate-completions.sh --check, and git diff --check passed.
Full suite after the review fix: all 31 BATS files ran with isolated Git/XDG configuration — 624 passed, 6 failed, 0 skipped (630 total). The six remaining failures match those previously reproduced on untouched 2d4852d: PR remote matching (3), debug-trap output (2), and macOS terminal quoting (1).
macOS / Bash 3.2 / Git 2.50.1 smoke tests passed for bare-repository creation, copying, navigation, listing, command execution, configuration, removal, and a local postCreate hook running exactly once. A bare repository using per-worktree Git configuration also resolved correctly.
Linux, Windows, and Git 2.17 were not runtime-tested.
Regression evidence
All eleven regression tests pass. Six original bare-repository checks failed before the root-selection fix, while the normal-repository control passed. The two GIT_WORK_TREE tests failed before the first review fix. Both new GIT_COMMON_DIR tests fail on 28d4041, including a benign parent-file copy.
The GIT_COMMON_DIR=. resolver test also sets GIT_DIR=. and GIT_WORK_TREE=., and verifies that all three remain unchanged for the caller. The end-to-end copy test uses an absolute GIT_COMMON_DIR and a bare repository named .git: a relative common-directory override independently breaks Git's checkout in a newly created worktree. Fixtures use disposable local repositories and harmless files.

Bug Fixes
Worktree creation from bare repositories now uses the bare Git directory as the root for configuration and copy settings, including when run from a linked worktree.
Documentation
Clarified that the default worktree location is a sibling directory named <bare-directory-name>-worktrees, and that relative worktree locations and copy sources use the bare Git directory as their root.
Documented that files found only in Git history are not copied; use git gtr copy --from <worktree> to copy from a checkout.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The CLI now resolves bare repositories to their common Git directory, including from linked worktrees. Normal repositories retain the existing root-resolution behavior. Regression tests cover configuration, copy sources, worktree locations, and normal-repository controls. Documentation and help describe the bare-repository paths.
_resolve_main_repo_root checks the common Git directory’s bare status and returns its canonical path for bare repositories. Tests cover bare and normal root resolution, including Git environment variables.
Apply the bare root to worktree paths tests/bare_repositories.bats, README.md, docs/configuration.md, lib/commands/help.sh
Tests cover configuration and copy isolation, worktree locations, linked worktrees, and normal-repository behavior. Documentation and help describe the bare-repository configuration, copy, and default worktree locations.
Bare repositories now resolve to their own config and copy root, and normal repositories keep their existing behavior. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains; the only edge case is an unusual manually set Git environment layout.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0b86a
The change removes unintended parent-directory configuration and copying. A limited residual risk remains: configured broad copy patterns can select bare-repository metadata that copying from a normal checkout excludes.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: Using the bare Git directory as the copy root makes Git metadata eligible for configured copy patterns. In particular, a bare repository named .git previously placed those files beneath a rejected .git component; at head, files such as config and HEAD have ordinary relative names and pass that check. Broad inherited patterns could therefore place credential-bearing configuration or repository data into a checkout. Sensitive contents and subsequent disclosure were not demonstrated; the concern requires matching copy configuration and remains within the caller's filesystem authority.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The residual copy exposure applies to bare repositories operated on with matching local, repository-file, global, or system include patterns. Its immediate outcome is additional data in a local worktree under the invoking user's permissions; the inspected creation and copy path adds no automatic remote transmission.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A configured recursive file pattern can now match config, HEAD, or object files directly beneath a bare root. For a .git-named bare repository, the previous parent-relative spelling contained a forbidden .git component. If selected metadata contains confidential information, copying makes it ordinary worktree content that could subsequently be shared; neither confidential fixture contents nor subsequent sharing were demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Copying remains opt-in through include patterns, with traversal, symlink-component, .git-component, and destination checks. These controls constrain paths below the supplied root but do not classify the root's contents as a bare Git database.
observed — Selecting a different .gtrconfig does not remove hook approval checks. File-defined hooks are filtered through existing trust validation, whose key binds command content, the canonical repository root, and Git-directory identity.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — A failed root probe propagates through repository discovery and stops creation before worktree mutation. After successful Git creation, copying and hooks remain separate steps without command-level rollback. That lifecycle ordering predates this PR; staged directory-copy failures clean their own staging trees.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define an explicit bare-repository copy policy that separates user-provided assets from Git metadata, and validate broad inherited patterns against bare repositories named both .git and other names. This would preserve the existing metadata-exclusion expectation independently of the source root's pathname.
