test: document and cover Git configuration trust policy - #222
Clarify that local, global, and system Git configuration is trusted input, while executable .gtrconfig entries require approval. Add seven isolated integration tests covering lifecycle hooks, fresh bash/zsh/fish postCd helpers, hook environment exports, and worktrees.dir precedence and literal path handling. The UI color documentation distinguishes values displayed by configuration commands from those used at runtime. Runtime behavior is unchanged.
Motivation
Make the existing trust boundary explicit and protect intentional user configuration from future regressions. The tests confirm that Git-config hooks run while unapproved .gtrconfig hooks remain blocked, and that honoring a configured destination does not approve repository commands.
Type of Change
Documentation update
Other: regression coverage
Testing
Tested on macOS with Git 2.50.1, zsh 5.9, and fish 4.9.3. The branch is based on 7077fa9.
All 718 BATS tests pass across 33 files, run with isolated Git configuration and XDG config/cache/data paths.
All seven policy tests also pass under system Bash 3.2.57; the full suite used Homebrew Bash 5.3.20.
Repository ShellCheck command and ShellCheck on the new BATS file pass.
Completion generation check and diff whitespace check pass.
The generated-shell tests verify trusted export propagation and absence of unapproved file exports after the helper returns. Assertion failures propagate through Bash, Zsh, and Fish. Fixtures create worktrees without fetching and disable system Git configuration.
Breaking Changes
None.
Checklist
Read CONTRIBUTING.md and followed project style.
Added regression coverage and updated documentation.
Tested create/remove and shell hooks in disposable macOS repositories.
Added no runtime dependencies, commands, or flags.
Noted the validation platforms and limits above.

Documented trusted Git configuration sources, approval requirements for .gtrconfig entries, and limits on approval.
Clarified color behavior, including environment variable overrides and that .gtrconfig does not set the UI color.
Tests
Added coverage for hook trust behavior, worktree destination configuration and precedence, and shell integration.

Summary
Configuration policy and runtime color docs/configuration.md
The guide distinguishes single-value precedence from multi-value merging, describes Git configuration trust and .gtrconfig approval, and clarifies runtime color precedence.
Worktree settings and shell hooks tests/config_trust_policy.bats
Tests check worktree destination selection, literal untrusted paths, lifecycle hooks, export handling, and generated Bash, Zsh, and Fish helpers. They verify that trusted hooks run and unapproved .gtrconfig hooks are skipped.
Issue 203 reports failures when shasum is missing. This PR adds related trust-helper coverage but does not change or test the shasum dependency.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 38c88
The documentation and regression tests align with the existing trust policy. No actionable issue remains before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to c70cd
The PR documents and tests an existing trust policy without expanding execution privileges. An existing risk remains: someone able to modify trusted Git configuration can cause commands to run as the invoking user.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Successful influence requires write access to Git configuration consumed by the victim. Execution authority is that of the invoking user. Configuration scope determines reach: repository-local settings affect that repository, global settings can affect the user's repositories, and system settings can affect multiple users who consume them. A repository-controlled .gtrconfig alone does not satisfy the executable-entry approval gate.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained Security finding concerns the writable-Git-configuration trust boundary. The guide explicitly trusts local, global, and system configuration, while its concrete write-protection warning names .git/config and included files. The underlying configuration-to-command execution capability predates this PR; the comparison and test-consumer trace establish no new execution path or authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing .gtrconfig approval lifecycle binds approval to repository identity and executable-definition content. Rejection leaves definitions untrusted, identity or definition changes invalidate the matching approval, and reapproval restores it. The trust command checks again after writing approval. Direct dispatch and generated Bash, Zsh, and Fish helpers retain the approval gate; approved commands may delegate to scripts whose contents are not pinned.

Explanation
The title "test: document and cover Git configuration trust policy" matches the main change. The PR updates docs/configuration.md to describe the Git configuration trust boundary and the precedence and merge rules for copy settings, and adds tests/config_trust_policy.bats with seven integration tests for trust-policy behavior. The title names both the documentation and test parts of the change. Its "test:" prefix is slightly narrow because most of the diff is documentation, but the title still describes the primary change accurately. The title is 55 characters, which is within a normal length.

Cover export propagation in generated postCd helpers.
The generated-shell cases do not detect lost trusted exports. Add trusted and untrusted export hooks, then assert their state after gtr_run_post_cd_hooks returns. Use set -e in the Bash and Zsh scripts so either assertion failure makes the BATS command fail. This improves regression coverage and does not indicate a current production failure.
