docs(saas-api): per-plan maximum TTL, clamped, and a 90-day TTL range (LAB-12085) - #224
Rule chosen for the writer's own copy: the PUT2xx carries the bound the store applied, as X-CacheKit-Fresh-For, and SDKs and forwarding tiers bound their copy by min(local_ttl, effective_ttl, fresh_for). Trade-off: it is a new response header on PUT that every SDK must learn to read (none does today, see the feature matrix), and until an SDK does, its copy of a clamped write keeps the stated TTL and can outlive the stored entry's fresh_until by up to that TTL less the plan's maximum. The alternative, accepting the divergence and stating its maximum, needs no wire change, but its maximum is the stated TTL less the plan's maximum (up to 89 days on Free), and for a write without a TTL the whole configured local TTL. Reusing X-CacheKit-Fresh-For, rather than a new header, keeps one grammar and one parser, and the header already means "how long the value this response is about stays fresh". A copy kept without a 2xx (timeout, transport error) still cannot learn the applied bound; the spec states that excess. A server stores the write as stated (the Fallback) when it cannot determine the tenant's plan, or until its deployment meets the conditions for clamping (below); its 2xx reports what it stored.
What changes in spec/saas-api.md
§ Plan maximum TTL (new): Free 86,400 s, Startup 2,592,000 s, Professional 7,776,000 s, Enterprise none. On a plan with a maximum, a stated TTL above it is stored with the maximum, not rejected, and a write without a TTL is stored with the maximum, not with no expiry (API-97). The maximum bounds evict_at from each write's or PATCH's stamp, fresh window first: applied_stale_ttl = min(stale_ttl, max_ttl − applied_ttl). PATCH /ttl is clamped the same way, with the stored stale window (API-98), and since its 200 does not report the applied value, a PATCH response must not extend a local copy (API-104). Validation runs first and stays plan-independent, so a client can still pre-validate every write. A plan change does not re-time stored entries. Fallback: a server that cannot determine the tenant's plan, or whose deployment does not yet meet the conditions API-101 sets for clamping, stores the write or PATCH as stated, as on a plan without a maximum; API-97 and API-98 apply only once neither holds.
TTL range:X-CacheKit-TTL, PATCH /ttl's ttl and ttl + stale_ttl go from a 2,592,000 to a 7,776,000 maximum (stale_ttl alone to 7,775,999). A larger value is still a 400.
No hidden default: the plan maximum is the only default for a write without a TTL (API-99, merging API-40 and API-41). On Enterprise an omitted TTL still stores a no-expiry entry; the no-expiry contract, the PUT paragraph under Entry lifecycle and the write-semantics bullet say so.
X-CacheKit-Fresh-For on PUT: a store that clamps sends it on every 2xx for a bounded entry, as the stored entry's remaining freshness (API-100). No write or PATCH is clamped until the store sends it, every server-side hop that relays a PUT2xx passes it through (API-102), and every tier that keeps a copy of a forwarded write bounds that copy by it (API-105) — API-101 — so a 2xx without it means the stated TTL was applied or no expiry was stored. A tier may omit the header for a copy only on positive evidence from a GET200; a PUT2xx without the header never qualifies a copy as no-expiry. "Signal-capable" keeps meaning GET emission. The writer's own copy (API-103, replacing API-35), a forwarding tier's copy (API-105, API-106 and API-107, replacing API-20, API-21 and API-27; a malformed header is 0; a tier caps what it emits at 2,592,000) and a tier's relay of the header (API-102) follow from it. The revocation-bound sum gains the plan-maximum excess of a writer's copy bounded without the header.
X-CacheKit-Fresh-For grammar: unchanged at a 2,592,000 maximum. Emission is now min(2592000, max(0, floor(fresh_until − now))), so a Professional entry with more than 30 days left reports 2592000, never more.
Ids that changed what they demand are retired per conformance/README.md, and the retired map names each successor: API-20, API-21 and API-27 (the bound source of a forwarded write changed), API-35 (the writer's copy also takes the PUT header), and API-40 and API-41 (merged into API-99).
Other files
conformance/requirements.json and the regenerated conformance/coverage.md: eleven new ids (API-97 to API-107, numbered after the API-77 to API-96 that main minted meanwhile), six retired.
sdk-feature-matrix.md: the server-bounded backfill row records, per SDK, that the PUT response's X-CacheKit-Fresh-For is not read (cachekit-py 0.25.1, cachekit-rs 0.13.1, @cachekit-io/cachekit 0.2.3, artifacts inspected 2026-10-31). Those three cells go ✅ → ⚠️ against API-103. The SaaS API row moves the over-range TTL bound to 7,776,000, and records that cachekit-py refuses a ttl + stale_ttl over 2,592,000 and @cachekit-io/cachekit refuses a TTL over 2,592,000, both now inside the range (TypeScript cell ✅ → ⚠️).
CONTEXT.md: No-expiry entry is defined by its stored state, and Plan maximum TTL and TTL range are added.
changelog.d/20261031_plan-maximum-ttl.md, with the breaking notes for callers and SDKs.
Out of scope: server and SDK code, entries stored before the change, and new test vectors.
Checks
Locally: tools/conformance.py check --base origin/main (OK, no id dropped or un-retired), tools/test_conformance.py, tools/test_changelog_collect.py, tools/check-spec-duplication.py, tools/check-version-floors.py, tools/freshness-headers-verify.py (31 vectors; the vectors are unchanged).
Each plan now has a maximum TTL (Free 24 h, Startup 30 d, Professional
90 d, Enterprise none). On a plan with one, a stated TTL above it is
stored with the maximum rather than rejected, and a write without a TTL
is stored with the maximum rather than with no expiry. The maximum
bounds the whole stored life, fresh window first. The stated-TTL value
range rises to 7,776,000; X-CacheKit-Fresh-For keeps its 2,592,000
ceiling.
A PUT 2xx now reports the bound the store applied as
X-CacheKit-Fresh-For, and the writer's own copy and a forwarding tier's
copy are bounded by it, so a clamped write's local copy cannot outlive
the stored entry. Requirement ids whose demand changed are retired and
re-minted.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified plan-based TTL limits: Free entries are capped at 24 hours, Startup at 30 days, Professional at 90 days, and Enterprise has no plan cap.
Documented that writes and TTL updates above a plan’s maximum are clamped, and writes without a TTL use that maximum on capped plans. Existing entries retain their timing until written or updated.
Expanded guidance on freshness bounds reported by successful writes and how SDKs and cache tiers should apply them.
Raised the documented TTL input limit to 90 days and updated conformance requirements and SDK status information, including compatibility gaps.
Walkthrough
The SaaS API specification defines plan-based TTL limits, clamping for writes and TTL patches, and freshness bounds on successful writes. Conformance records and the SDK feature matrix document related requirements and compatibility gaps.

Summary
Plan TTL rules CONTEXT.md, spec/saas-api.md, changelog.d/20261031_plan-maximum-ttl.md
The specification sets plan maximums, raises the accepted TTL range to 90 days, and describes how writes and PATCH /ttl apply plan limits. Writes without a TTL use the plan maximum when one applies.
Write freshness reporting and propagation spec/saas-api.md, changelog.d/20261031_plan-maximum-ttl.md, tools/freshness-headers-verify.py
Successful bounded writes report the applied bound in X-CacheKit-Fresh-For. The specification describes how tiers and SDKs use that bound. The verifier comment distinguishes the header's 30-day cap from the 90-day TTL range.
Conformance and SDK status conformance/requirements.json, conformance/coverage.md, sdk-feature-matrix.md, changelog.d/20261031_plan-maximum-ttl.md
The requirements and coverage records update API entries, totals, and retired requirements. The feature matrix and changelog record SDK differences for TTL limits and write-response freshness handling.

Keep API-20 and API-27: their requirement sentences are unchanged and
every existing tier stays compliant. Read a forwarded write's PUT header
with the consumption grammar, forbid a PATCH response from extending a
local copy, state the unresolved-plan rule, correct the dispatch-anchored
tolerance claim, mark the writer's-copy gap in the matrix, and trim
restated text.

the server cannot determine the plan, a write without a TTL is stored without
expiry, even for a tenant on a bounded plan; clarify that the plan maximum is
not a retention guarantee in this case.
- Around line 17-18: Qualify the `PUT` `2xx` claim for `X-CacheKit-Fresh-For`:

it is present for no-expiry entries or responses from pre-signal servers.
Review comments at @sdk-feature-matrix.md:

state that TTLs above 2,592,000 and up to 7,776,000 are accepted subject to
server clamping, and qualify the zero-TTL no-expiry behaviour to account for
bounded plans applying their maximum when the client omits the header. Leave the
other 0.1.5 findings unchanged.
Review comments at @spec/saas-api.md:
- Line 166: Update the “Decay, never re-stamp” requirement so a forwarded-write
remainder emitted by a tier is capped at 2,592,000 seconds as well as limited to
the decayed bound, including when the store omits its freshness header and the
effective TTL supplies the bound.

…ping on relay
Retire API-20, API-21 and API-27 for API-85 to API-87: the bound source
of a forwarded write changed what they demand. Keep "signal-capable"
meaning GET emission, require the PUT header only of a clamping store,
and forbid clamping until every forwarding tier relays and honours it.
Scope the clamp to a determined plan with the fallback stated apart,
define a no-expiry entry by its stored state (glossary included), and
trim restated text.
…r tiers
The clamp rules and the API-81 gate could not both be met before the
gate held; one fallback paragraph now scopes the clamp. A tier may treat
an absent header as no-expiry only on a GET from a signal-capable store,
never on a PUT 2xx. The relay rule covers every hop that relays a PUT
2xx, the 2,592,000 cap sits inside the tier's MUST NOT, and restated text
is cut.

ReusingX-CacheKit-Fresh-For, rather than a new header, keeps one grammar and one parser, and the header already means "how long the value this response is about stays fresh". A copy kept without a2xx(timeout, transport error) still cannot learn the applied bound; the spec states that excess. A server stores the write as stated (the Fallback) when it cannot determine the tenant's plan, or until its deployment meets the conditions for clamping (below); its2xxreports what it stored. What changes in

No write orPATCHis clamped until the store sends it, every server-side hop that relays aPUT2xxpasses it through (API-102), and every tier that keeps a copy of a forwarded write bounds that copy by it (API-105) — API-101 — so a2xxwithout it means the stated TTL was applied or no expiry was stored. A tier may omit the header for a copy only on positive evidence from aGET200; aPUT2xxwithout the header never qualifies a copy as no-expiry. "Signal-capable" keeps meaningGETemission. The revocation-bound sum gains the plan-maximum excess of a writer's copy bounded without the header.X-CacheKit-Fresh-Forgrammar: unchanged at a 2,592,000 maximum.
