test(write-behind): pin the L1-off fork window, tighten the parking tests, use wait_for (LAB-12281) - #698
Follow-ups from the review of #692 (the parked write-behind writer). No behaviour change.
Changes
L1-off fork window, pinned. New TestParking::test_with_l1_off_fork_warns_only_while_a_thread_waits: write_behind=True, l1_enabled=False. After a write, while the writer's thread waits, os.fork() warns that the process is multi-threaded; once the thread has waited out IDLE_S and ended, it does not (Python 3.12+, Linux).
Sweeper fork test, moved.test_minimal_already_forks_multi_threaded_without_write_behind ran with write_behind=False, so it pinned L1's sweeper, and its _WRITER not in threads assert could never fail. It is now test_l1_expiry_sweep.py::test_the_sweeper_makes_fork_warn_for_good (@cache.minimal(backend=None)), and asserts the sweeper's thread is the one running. The never-failing assert is gone.
Forked-child parking test, tightened.test_a_forked_child_starts_with_no_waiting_threads now sets MAX_PARKED = 1 before the fork, so a child that inherited the parent's count of 1 could not park.
_work waits with Condition.wait_for (s.closed or _runnable(s) is not None, timeout=IDLE_S) in place of the hand-written deadline loop.
Lock order in the _writers_locks comment: a state's cond first, the writers' lock second, never the reverse (as _park/_unpark take them; docs/free-threading.md already says so).
fork_warns() moves to tests/utils/fork_helpers.py (two users). The no_park_cap fixture passes raising=False, so a run against a writer without the cap fails the tests rather than their setup.
Mutation check
The two tests that pin the writer, against each writer:
fail, in the test body: AttributeError: '_State' object has no attribute 'idle' (the old writer has no waiting threads to count)
fail, same AttributeError
this PR, _park returns False (no thread ever waits: the pre-#692 behaviour)
fail: never held (no thread waits)
fail: never held (the parent's thread never waits)
this PR, _park counts every PID's waiting threads (a child inherits the parent's count)
pass (forks no writer state)
fail: the child reports never held (its thread cannot park)
Against the same inherited-count mutant, the forked-child test as it stood on main (cap 8) passes, which is the gap this closes. With the fixture's raising=False, nothing errors in setup on the pre-#692 module; both tests fail there on the missing waiting-thread state. The two mutants on the current module show the failures are behavioural.
tests/unit/test_write_behind.py + tests/unit/test_l1_expiry_sweep.py on Python 3.12: 60 passed. The two fork tests passed 5 runs in a row under -n auto.
ruff check, ruff format --check, basedpyright: clean (one existing reportPrivateUsage warning at write_behind.py:143, unchanged).
Docs: none needed. docs/features/write-behind.md already describes the L1-off fork window and docs/free-threading.md the lock order; behaviour is unchanged.
…ests, use wait_for
The fork test that ran with write_behind=False pinned L1's sweeper, not the
writer: it moves to the L1 sweep tests, and a new test pins the writer's own
window with L1 off, where a waiting thread alone makes os.fork() warn until it
ends. The forked-child test caps parking at the parent's one thread, so a child
that inherited the parent's count would fail it. _work waits with
Condition.wait_for instead of a hand-written deadline loop, and the writers'
lock comment states the lock order. No behaviour change.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved the reliability of background cache write processing. Idle workers now wait for queued work or shutdown, then check again for pending work before continuing. This helps ensure queued writes are handled promptly while avoiding unnecessary polling during idle periods.
Walkthrough
The write-behind worker now waits on a condition predicate. Tests check fork warnings while a writer thread waits and after it exits, and check for a warning after a minimal-cache miss.
The worker waits for closure, runnable work, or the idle timeout. The lock-order comment states that the state condition is acquired before the writers lock.
cachekit-io/cachekit-py#623: Introduced the WriteBehind queue, worker lifecycle, fork handling and close() behaviour.
cachekit-io/cachekit-py#692: Added parked writer threads, IDLE_S, MAX_PARKED and the waiting-worker fork warning.

A path fails at +1% or more against the base (+2% for serializer_orjson). This check is not required: a deliberate cost increase is accepted at merge. Method: docs/performance.md, Instruction budgets.
