fix(cachekitio): bound the writer's L1 copy by the PUT Fresh-For; 90-day TTL range (LAB-12090) - #695
Conformance with the per-plan maximum TTL in the SaaS API spec (spec/saas-api.md, Remaining Freshness and Plan maximum TTL).
API-103, the writer's own copy. After a PUT 2xx, the decorator keeps its L1 copy of the value it wrote for at most min(local_ttl, effective_ttl, fresh_for) from the response, where fresh_for is the 2xx's X-CacheKit-Fresh-For read with the existing GET grammar (1-7 ASCII digits, at most 2,592,000, length check first). Absent header: today's bound (ttl, or L1's 300 s default for ttl=None). Malformed or 0: no L1 copy. X-CacheKit-Stale-TTL never lengthens it. Covered on every write path: sync and async miss, async locked miss, SWR revalidation (sync and async), and write-behind.
API-104.refresh_ttl's PATCH response never creates or extends an L1 bound. The code already did not; a test now pins it.
TTL range.ttl + stale_ttl may reach 7,776,000 s (90 days). The Fresh-For grammar cap stays 2,592,000 s, as a separate constant. The @cache.io default stale window is min(ceil(ttl), 7,776,000 − ceil(ttl)). It is unchanged at ttl 3600 (3600), becomes 2,592,000 at ttl 2,592,000 (it was 0), and is absent at ttl ≥ 7,776,000. On a plan whose maximum is below ttl + stale_ttl, the server trims the window, for example to 0 on Startup at ttl 2,592,000.
How
CachekitIOBackend.set() still sends the PUT and returns None, so the BaseBackend protocol is unchanged. While the decorator holds a private _WRITE_DEADLINES context list open, set() appends (received, fresh_until): the time.time() its 2xx arrived, and that plus Fresh-For (inf when the header is absent, the receipt itself when malformed). Both are taken on the thread that received the response, so a later stall (the hop back to a busy event loop) cannot restart them.
The decorator's L2 write opens the list around every handler set / set_async call, so a patch or subclass of either still decides the write; StandardCacheHandler is unchanged. The list is opened only for a handler whose backend can report, decided once and cached on the handler: the backend says it reports (forwarded attributes included), or holds a reporting backend in an attribute, list or tuple up to three wrappers down. Every other backend writes exactly as before, so the instruction-gated miss path stays within its budget. A wrapper or proxy whose set reaches a CachekitIO set on the same thread therefore keeps the bound, whether or not it forwards attributes; one that builds its backend on first use keeps the stated ttl. A bound reported before an override raised still applies. asyncio.to_thread runs the write in a copy of the context, which shares the list. A set override that delegates to super().set forwards the bound; one that never reaches it reports nothing, and that write keeps no L1 copy because its bound is unknown.
The writer's L1 copy expires at min(received + ttl, fresh_until) (cache_handler._written_copy_expiry; the L1 default stands in for ttl=None), through L1Cache.put(expires_at=...). Every term is timed from the receipt, header or not. A failed write keeps the stated ttl (API-36/37).
Write-behind puts its L1 copy before the write lands. Once the 2xx arrives, a copy that would serve past its bound is dropped, not re-put. A miss whose write landed first makes its put under the per-miss latch, already bounded, so a copy past its bound is never published.
L1Cache.put that declines an already-expired value now drops the older entry under the key, as an oversized put already did. Without it, a 0 Fresh-For on a rewrite would leave the previous value serving.
Docs
README, docs/api-reference.md, docs/configuration.md, docs/features/l1-invalidation.md, and a new TTL Range and Plan Maximum section in docs/backends/cachekitio.md: omitted TTL on CachekitIO is stored for the plan maximum (never-expire only on a plan without a maximum, or where none applied when the entry was written), plan table, write-path bound, PATCH note. Redis, Memcached and File TTL text is unchanged.
Tests
tests/unit/test_cachekitio_write_bound.py runs the decorator over the real client on a fake transport with a fake L1 clock: header below TTL (L1 bounded by it), header missing (bound = ttl), header above TTL (never extends), ttl=None, malformed/0 (no copy), SWR revalidation, write-behind in both landing orders (a put after the 2xx is bounded and, at 0, never visible) and with an L1 put 10 s after the receipt, time spent between receipt and L1 put with and without the header (sync and async), set overrides that delegate (bound kept), bypass the base set (no copy) or raise after their 2xx (bound kept, write-behind included), forwarding proxies and composing wrappers, nested writes, a patched handler set / set_async that refuses the write (no PUT), and the PATCH case. test_swr_decorator.py moves to the 90-day cap with at-bound and one-over cases.
Local at the latest head: ruff check, ruff format --check, basedpyright (0 errors), the fast suite without Redis (7,113 passed; the Redis-fixture tests could not start on this host and run in CI), --doctest-modules src/cachekit, --markdown-docs README.md docs/. The new tests fail on the previous head and pass on this one.
…d widen the TTL range to 90 days
The server may clamp a write's TTL to the plan's maximum and reports the result in the
X-CacheKit-Fresh-For header of the PUT 2xx. The decorator now keeps its L1 copy of a value it
wrote for at most min(ttl, fresh_for) from the response (API-103): an absent header keeps today's
ttl bound, a malformed or 0 value keeps no copy. A write-behind copy, put before its write lands,
is dropped once the write lands with a bound the copy would outlive. A PATCH /ttl response never
touches an L1 bound (API-104), now covered by a test.
ttl + stale_ttl may now reach 7,776,000 s (the protocol's 90-day TTL range); the Fresh-For
grammar cap stays 2,592,000 s. An L1 put declined because the value is already expired now drops
the older entry under the key, as an oversized put does.
Docs: omitted TTL on CachekitIO is stored for the plan maximum (never-expire only on a plan
without one), plan maximums table, and the new write-path bound.

The combined TTL and stale window cap changes from 30 to 90 days. Documentation clarifies when CachekitIO uses a plan maximum for ttl=None. The SWR tests cover the revised limit.
CachekitIO PUT writes record Fresh-For deadlines. The cache handler detects reachable deadline reporters, calculates an L1 expiry bound, and includes it in store outcomes.
The decorator applies reported expiry bounds to ordinary writes, SWR revalidation, and write-behind copies. L1 removes an existing entry when a put has no valid future expiry. Tests cover sync and async paths.
cachekit-io/cachekit-py#667: Adds the async unlocked miss path that this change updates with deadline handling.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 50566
The freshness test still checks that a failed search takes the safe path, but its stub should be corrected to keep the test reliable. This does not appear to block merging.

A path fails at +1% or more against the base (+2% for serializer_orjson). This check is not required: a deliberate cost increase is accepted at merge. Method: docs/performance.md, Instruction budgets.
The capability check walked the backend's MRO on every write, and the backend call
went through an extra frame. One class-attribute lookup now answers every backend
but CachekitIO, and the handler calls the backend directly as it did before. The
plain-backend miss falls from +4.2% to +1.3% instructions against the base.

Correct the io() preset ttl=None docstring.
The DecoratorConfig.io docstring says ttl=None = never expire. On CachekitIO, ttl=None sends no TTL, and the server stores the entry for the plan maximum TTL. Entries never expire only on a plan without a maximum.

### [1/2] src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py:1840
Issue identified during code review:
WHAT: `serialized_data` is typed as `Any`, but both call sites pass `bytes` (`outcome.envelope` and `serialized_data` from the async miss path).
WHY: `Any` turns off type checking for this parameter, so a wrong payload type could reach `_put_l1` without being caught.
HOW: Annotate it as `bytes`, matching `_send_deferred`'s `envelope: bytes` and `_defer_write`.
---
### [2/2] src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py:1306
Issue identified during code review:
Handler override bypass in _set_l2_async(): the async miss write and the SWR write call `handler.set_with_freshness_async` whenever it exists, and every StandardCacheHandler defines it, so subclass overrides or monkeypatches of `set_async` (and of `set` via `_set_l2` in cache_handler.py:439-442) never run on miss writes. When tests/unit/test_circuit_breaker_decorator_recovery.py:904 patches `StandardCacheHandler.set_async` to inject write failures, the injection never fires on the async miss path, so the 'failure' scenario no longer exercises write-side breaker accounting; backend `set` overrides are protected by `_reports_write_freshness`, but handler-level overrides are not. Fix: take the freshness path only when the handler's `set_async`/`set` is StandardCacheHandler's own; otherwise call `set_async`/`set` and report `fresh_for=None`.
Reference implementation (from code review):
// src/cachekit/decorators/wrapper.py:1306
set_with_freshness_async = getattr(handler, "set_with_freshness_async", None)
own_set_async = getattr(type(handler), "set_async", None) is getattr(StandardCacheHandler, "set_async", None)
if set_with_freshness_async is not None and own_set_async:
stored, fresh_for = await set_with_freshness_async(cache_key, serialized_data, ttl, _stale_ttl)
return stored, False, fresh_for
return await handler.set_async(cache_key, serialized_data, ttl=ttl, stale_ttl=_stale_ttl), False, None

…verrides
The PUT 2xx's Fresh-For is now reported as an absolute deadline, taken on
the thread that received the response, so a stall before the L1 put (the hop
back to a busy event loop, or a write-behind put long after its write
landed) shortens the copy instead of restarting its bound.
The base CachekitIOBackend.set reports that deadline through a
context-scoped list the handler opens around each write, replacing the
private variant the handler called only while set was the class's own. An
override that delegates to super().set now forwards the bound; one that
never reaches it keeps no L1 copy, since its response's bound is unknown.
An entry without a TTL never expires only on a plan without a maximum, or
where none applied when it was written: a write whose plan the service could
not determine is stored as stated, and an entry written before the maximum
applied keeps its timing until its next write. So get_ttl() can return None
on any plan. The preset docstrings' "ttl=None = never expire" now say what
CachekitIO does, and L1Cache.put documents that a declined put drops the
older entry for every caller.
…andler overrides and proxies
The backend now reports the 2xx's receipt time with its Fresh-For deadline,
so the stated TTL is also timed from the receipt when the header is absent.
The report is opened around the handler's own set / set_async in the
decorator's L2 write, not inside private handler helpers, so a patch or
subclass of either still decides the write. The handler is back to its
previous shape. The capability is read off the backend instance, so a proxy
that forwards attributes keeps the bound.
A write-behind put that comes after its write landed is made under the
latch and bounded by the landed deadline, so a copy past that deadline is
never published.
…bound when set then fails
The deadline list is open around every L2 write, so a wrapper that composes a CachekitIO backend without forwarding its attributes keeps the bound. A received bound wins even when an override raises after its 2xx. The list and the capability flag are private, and a deferred copy is put with the exact expiry the writer compares against.
…ep the miss path call-free
_send_deferred applies the reported bound whether or not the write counts as stored, and drops the copy if the write raises. With nothing reported (every backend but CachekitIO) _set_l2 answers inline and the miss path puts L1 directly, so the gated miss path pays no extra Python call. _l1_write_until is renamed _written_copy_expiry and takes the backend, and an unknown bound is logged once per backend class.
…n spent
Every value read counts against one budget, and each object or container is read once, so a cycle or a shared nested list ends at once. A spent budget answers True, which opens the deadline list instead of dropping the bound. The flag and storage are read only through Python's own descriptors and type.__getattribute__, so no property, __getattr__, __iter__ override or metaclass hook runs, and the unreachable-wrapper log runs inside the guard.
…type internals without hooks
seen maps an object to the shallowest depth it was reached at, so a wrapper first reached by a longer path is searched again from the shorter one. Each object is read once, with its flag taken from that read, and each type's MRO is scanned once per search and charged to the budget. Type internals are read through type's own descriptors, the fail-open log names only the exception type, and the once-per-class log is keyed by name so no class is kept alive.

A dict, list or tuple subclass root holds its items at depth 0, and their flags were skipped with the root's. The type cache is keyed by id(type), so no metaclass __hash__ runs; a sentinel marks a flag not found yet, so a subclass's None stops the lookup as Python's does; and an object at the depth limit has only its flag read.
… search
A value was charged when read and again when walked, so a backend with about 2,000 attributes spent the budget and opened the list on every write. An unset slot was not charged at all, so many instances with many unset slots made uncharged descriptor calls. Charge the slot reads attempted; the walk charges each value.
Charging every slot read in _read_object charged a set slot twice: once there, and again when the walk read its value. Charge only unset slots there, so each read counts once, as an instance-dict value already does.
Align the stub with _read_object and assert that it runs.
TypeError still tests the failure-open behaviour, so this is a test-precision improvement rather than a runtime defect. Add the third parameter and a call marker. The marker prevents a signature change from being swallowed by the broad exception handler.

… the miss path
getattr with a default is a builtin call on every L2 write; a plain attribute load under try costs nothing until it raises. The gated miss shape measured +1.05% in CI at the previous head and +0.65% locally now (+0.87% before).
A dict-subclass router holding its backend in self.inner was walked as a container only, so its attributes were never read and its writes' L1 copies ignored Fresh-For. A container subclass now has its storage read too, its attributes one level down and its items at its own level; base containers are matched by identity, so no metaclass __hash__ runs.

ttl + stale_ttlmay reach 7,776,000 s (90 days). The Fresh-For grammar cap stays 2,592,000 s, as a separate constant. The@cache.iodefault stale window ismin(ceil(ttl), 7,776,000 − ceil(ttl)). It is unchanged at ttl 3600 (3600), becomes 2,592,000 at ttl 2,592,000 (it was 0), and is absent at ttl ≥ 7,776,000. On a plan whose maximum is belowttl + stale_ttl, the server trims the window, for example to 0 on Startup at ttl 2,592,000.How
CachekitIOBackend.set()still sends thePUTand returnsNone, so theBaseBackendprotocol is unchanged. While the decorator holds a private_WRITE_DEADLINEScontext list open,set()appends(received, fresh_until): thetime.time()its 2xx arrived, and that plus Fresh-For (infwhen the header is absent, the receipt itself when malformed). Both are taken on the thread that received the response, so a later stall (the hop back to a busy event loop) cannot restart them.set/set_asynccall, so a patch or subclass of either still decides the write;StandardCacheHandleris unchanged. A wrapper or proxy whosesetreaches a CachekitIOseton the same thread therefore keeps the bound, whether or not it forwards attributes; one that builds its backend on first use keeps the stated ttl. A bound reported before an override raised still applies.asyncio.to_threadruns the write in a copy of the context, which shares the list. Asetoverride that delegates tosuper().setforwards the bound; one that never reaches it reports nothing, and that write keeps no L1 copy because its bound is unknown.min(received + ttl, fresh_until)(cache_handler._written_copy_expiry; the L1 default stands in forttl=None), throughL1Cache.put(expires_at=...). Every term is timed from the receipt, header or not. A failed write keeps the stated ttl (API-36/37).L1Cache.putthat declines an already-expired value now drops the older entry under the key, as an oversized put already did. Without it, a0Fresh-For on a rewrite would leave the previous value serving.Docs

docs/api-reference.md,docs/configuration.md,docs/features/l1-invalidation.md, and a new TTL Range and Plan Maximum section indocs/backends/cachekitio.md: omitted TTL on CachekitIO is stored for the plan maximum (never-expire only on a plan without a maximum, or where none applied when the entry was written), plan table, write-path bound, PATCH note. Redis, Memcached and File TTL text is unchanged.Tests
tests/unit/test_cachekitio_write_bound.pyruns the decorator over the real client on a fake transport with a fake L1 clock: header below TTL (L1 bounded by it), header missing (bound = ttl), header above TTL (never extends),ttl=None, malformed/0 (no copy), SWR revalidation, write-behind in both landing orders (a put after the 2xx is bounded and, at0, never visible) and with an L1 put 10 s after the receipt, time spent between receipt and L1 put with and without the header (sync and async),setoverrides that delegate (bound kept), bypass the baseset(no copy) or raise after their 2xx (bound kept, write-behind included), forwarding proxies and composing wrappers, nested writes, a patched handlerset/set_asyncthat refuses the write (noPUT), and the PATCH case.test_swr_decorator.pymoves to the 90-day cap with at-bound and one-over cases.Local at the latest head:
