ByteStorage::retrieve, retrieve_data and validate walked every envelope twice: the structural pre-scan, then rmp_serde, which decodes the 8-byte checksum element by element through serde. They now first try a one-pass decode of the layout store writes, at any width of its lengths and size, and hand every other input to the pre-scan and rmp_serde as before. Bytes on the wire do not change, and neither does any accept, reject or error message.

The base is main at 619bc00, measured with that commit's own perf_ir (31 gated cases, page faults from 64 KiB), valgrind 3.22.0. The A/A floor, from two builds of the base in equal-length paths, is 0.00% on all 31 cases. Page faults are 0 per 1,000 ops in every faulted case on both sides. Budgets are left as committed.

extract_payload is #[inline(never)], and decode_envelope_full is #[cold] #[inline(never)]. Without them, rustc 1.99.1 compiled the decompress and checksum loops inlined into retrieve about 1% longer: retrieve/1048576 read +1.01% and /65536 +0.68%, the same in CI and locally. Per function, the extra instructions were in the inlined loop itself, not in the decode. Kept out of line, the loops compile once, whatever decode feeds them.

The bench binary's fat-LTO cost of having both retrieve and retrieve_data call the decode (README, Instruction counts) drops from 67–72 to 26–27 Ir/op at 40 B to 1 KiB. That is measured by building perf_ir with and without the retrieve_data case, on the base and on this head.

The one-pass decode

borrowed::StorageEnvelope::decode_one_pass accepts only this shape, which covers every envelope rmp_serde writes:

Field Accepted encodings
envelope fixarray of 4 (0x94)
compressed_data bin8, bin16, bin32
checksum fixarray of 8 (0x98), each byte a positive fixint or uint8
original_size positive fixint, uint8, uint16, uint32
format fixstr, str8, str16, str32, valid UTF-8

It returns None for anything else, including inputs the full decode accepts (a legacy int-array payload, a bin8 checksum, a uint64 or signed integer, the map form). decode_envelope then calls decode_envelope_full, the old body. Rejections therefore never come from the one-pass decode. Every input it does not take gets the result and the error text it got before, decode pre-scan: prefix included.

It holds the bounds the pre-scan enforces (spec/wire-format.md WIRE-8 and WIRE-9, spec/interop-mode.md IOP-24 to IOP-30):

  • Depth. The shape is two levels deep, below the bound of 100.
  • Declared lengths. Every length is checked against the bytes after it before they are read. split_at_checked slices the input, so nothing is indexed past its end.
  • Slot sum. A complete envelope always declares fewer slots than it has bytes, because each slot takes at least one byte and the root header is not a slot.
  • Materialising. Nothing is allocated until the whole envelope has been read. The format string and, from 64 KiB (LARGE_PAYLOAD), the payload copy come last, as in the serde decode, so the borrow-versus-copy split is unchanged.
  • Trailing bytes. As before, bytes after the envelope are ignored.

The spec's Retrieve Flow step 2 describes a pre-scan followed by a typed decode. Its normative content is the bounds above, checked before anything is materialised, and interop-mode.md → Decode bounds calls a header-only walk sufficient, not required. The conformance tests WIRE-16 and IOP-31 assert the pre-scan's own error for each reject vector. That error is still what every reject vector gets, because the one-pass decode declines every input the full decode rejects.

Evidence that the two decodes agree

  • One check, assert_one_pass_matches_full_decode, holds the property. Whatever the one-pass decode accepts, the full decode accepts into the same fields, and retrieve returns the full decode's envelope, extracted, error text included. It is built only for tests and under cfg(fuzzing), which cargo-fuzz sets, and is #[doc(hidden)].
  • one_pass_decode_matches_full_decode runs that check on the decode corpus, every decode-bounds.json vector, and canonical envelopes at each field's width boundaries. Each envelope is also tried truncated at every length, with 38 marker values replaced and inserted at every header position, and with trailing bytes. Both sides of the fallback run: more than 1,000 one-pass accepts, and more than 100 inputs only the full decode accepts.
  • one_pass_decode_takes_every_canonical_envelope asserts that the fast path takes every envelope store writes (fixstr to str32 formats, bin8 to bin32 payloads) and every *_bin wire-format vector. So the speed-up cannot silently disappear if the encoder changes.
  • byte_storage_corrupted_envelope is now a differential fuzz target. It runs the same check on raw bytes, and on envelopes store writes with bytes replaced, inserted or cut off. Clean runs of about 7.2 M and 4.6 M executions found nothing. Planted bugs fail at once: a checksum accepting 0x80..=0x8f, a format skipping UTF-8 validation, and a str16 length read one byte wide.
  • cargo test --all-features, --features ffi and --features encryption, plus clippy -D warnings, pass on x86_64. The byte-storage unit tests pass on i686, and the library builds for wasm32.

Sibling paths

  • Changed: retrieve and validate, which share decode_envelope. store already writes small envelopes in one pass (#148); a test asserts that its output either side of that path takes the one-pass decode.
  • Not changed: encrypt and decrypt, which do not touch the envelope.
  • Measured: native x86_64 only. wasm32 is not measured; the decode is target-independent and the library builds for wasm32. 32-bit is not measured; the byte-storage tests, including the differential, pass on i686.
  • Elsewhere: cachekit-ts runs its own envelope header walk before core's unpack. That walk stays; core's half of the read gets cheaper. Every SDK's payload decode after unwrapping (pre-scan, then a MessagePack decode) is the same two-walk pattern on a different document, and is out of scope here.

Docs: the retrieve rustdoc, the README's Envelope Decode Bounds and prescan bench row, SECURITY.md's Envelope decode bounds, and the fuzz README now describe the one-pass path.

Closes LAB-12100

…etrieve

retrieve and validate walked every envelope twice: the structural pre-scan,
then rmp_serde, which reads the 8-byte checksum element by element through
serde. At 40 B that was most of a read's cost.

decode_envelope now first tries a one-pass decode of the exact shape
rmp_serde writes: a 4-element fixarray holding a bin8/16/32 payload, a
fixarray of 8 checksum bytes (positive fixint or uint8), original_size as a
uint of at most 32 bits, and format as a fixstr or str8 of valid UTF-8. It
checks each declared length against the bytes after it before reading them
and allocates nothing until the whole envelope has been read, so it holds
the same decode bounds the pre-scan enforces. Any other input, and every
input it would reject, goes to the pre-scan and rmp_serde as before, so the
read accepts and rejects exactly what it did, with the same errors, and
still ignores bytes after the envelope.

one_pass_decode_matches_full_decode checks that on the decode corpus, the
decode-bounds vectors and every truncation and single-byte edit of the
canonical envelopes at each width boundary. byte_storage_corrupted_envelope
becomes a differential fuzz target over raw and corrupted stored envelopes,
through a hook built only under cfg(fuzzing).

perf_ir, Ir/op: retrieve/64 2,552 -> 1,083 (-57.6%), /1024 7,323 -> 5,705
(-22.1%), /65536 391,697 -> 390,158 (-0.4%); every other case unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance

    • retrieve(), retrieve_data() and validate() now try a one-pass decode for canonical envelopes written by store(), checking declared lengths before reading. Smaller payloads can be read without copying; larger payloads are copied. This reduces decoding overhead for supported inputs.
    • Inputs the one-pass decoder declines continue through fallback decoding, preserving its accepted inputs and error behaviour.
  • Documentation

    • Updated envelope decoding guidance to explain when each decoding path is used, how input bounds are checked, and which limits apply to fallback decoding.

Walkthrough

decode_envelope now tries one-pass decoding for canonical MessagePack envelopes. If that decoder declines an input, the structural pre-scan and Serde decoder handle it. Tests, fuzzing, and allocation checks cover the one-pass and fallback paths.

…fferential check

The one-pass decode declined a format of 256 bytes or more (str16, str32),
so "an envelope store writes is read in one pass" did not hold for those.
It now takes every str width, and the canonical-envelope tests cover str16
and str32; a uint64 original_size stands in as a full-decode-only input.

decode_canonical is renamed decode_one_pass: it also takes encodings wider
than the shortest. The unit test and the fuzz target now call one shared
assert_one_pass_matches_full_decode (built for tests and cfg(fuzzing)),
which also checks retrieve end to end; the field tuple, its conversion and
the three-way hook are gone. The borrow test runs both decodes. Docs state
the subset property on its own and in the present tense.

Restore direct owned StorageEnvelope decoding in the corrupted-envelope fuzz target.

The target now sends raw input only to assert_one_pass_matches_full_decode. That helper decodes the borrowed StorageEnvelope type, not the owned type. Arbitrary malformed input no longer reaches the owned deserialiser through this target. The sibling integration_layered_security target decodes only mutated, valid envelopes into the owned type. A regression that affects only the owned deserialiser on malformed input would therefore pass this target.

Restoring the direct decode closes this coverage gap. It does not address a current failure.

The one-pass decode also takes non-minimal length and size encodings (str8
for a short format, bin16 for a short payload), so the docs now name the
layout and say any width of its lengths and size qualifies, instead of "the
shape store writes". The corrupted-envelope fuzz target again feeds raw
input to the public owned StorageEnvelope decoder and extract, as it did
before the differential.

…-scan's scope exactly

The retrieve rustdoc listed uint8 checksum bytes and a uint32 size where the one-pass decode takes a positive fixint or uint8 and any uint up to 32 bits. The msgpack_bounds module doc, the README and SECURITY.md said or implied that the pre-scan runs on every envelope, or that any width of size qualifies; it runs on every envelope the one-pass decode declines. The decode-bounds test doc now states its real premise, and the test-only derive drops Debug, which nothing formats.

…ode cold

Inlined into retrieve beside the one-pass decode, the decompress and checksum loops compiled about 1% longer at 1 MiB under rustc 1.99.1 (perf_ir retrieve/1048576 +1.01%, /65536 +0.68% against the merge-base). One out-of-line extract_payload compiles them once, whatever decode feeds them. The full decode is marked cold: no envelope store writes reaches it.

perf_ir against the merge-base, rustc 1.99.1: retrieve/40 -61.6%, /64 -57.4%, /1024 -21.9%, /65536 -0.17%, /1048576 +0.17%; rustc 1.98.1: -61.6%, -57.4%, -21.9%, -0.34%, +0.02%. Every other case is unchanged.

SECURITY.md said every rejection carries the decode pre-scan prefix; an input that passes the pre-scan and fails the typed decode carries rmp_serde's message instead. Main added retrieve_data, borrowed the decoded format and moved the size cap into decode_envelope. The one-pass decode now yields a borrowed format, and the cap sits in decode_envelope ahead of both decodes, since the one-pass decode ignores trailing bytes. The allocation probe pins drop the pre-scan the one-pass decode skips.

Merged main at 9f76137 (retrieve_data) into this branch as f3c7e12: resolved README.md, src/byte_storage.rs, src/msgpack_bounds.rs and tests/decode_bounds_vectors.rs, and adapted src/read_allocation_probe.rs. The one-pass decode now yields a borrowed format, the size cap runs in decode_envelope ahead of both decodes (test_envelope_size_validation now pads a valid envelope past the cap to pin that), and the allocation pins drop the pre-scan the one-pass decode skips. git show --remerge-diff f3c7e12 shows the exact resolution. Auto-rebased onto main; CI will re-run.

…serde

After the merge, SECURITY.md said decode_envelope always runs the pre-scan. It runs it only on the fallback, before rmp_serde; the next paragraph covers the one-pass decode.

Minor follow-up Avoid validating the envelope format twice on malformed input.

889-889: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Low value

Avoid validating the envelope format twice on malformed input.

decode_one_pass runs from_utf8 on the format bytes. When that check fails, the envelope goes to decode_envelope_full, and the typed decode validates the same format bytes again. A malformed envelope with a large format therefore pays for one extra UTF-8 pass. The pass is bounded by the size cap. Consider a single validation path for format.

@coderabbitai Declining the follow-up on validating the format's UTF-8 twice (src/byte_storage.rs:889): it costs one extra pass, bounded by the size cap, only on an envelope that is rejected anyway, and sharing the check would let the one-pass decode reject inputs itself, breaking the rule that every rejection and its message come from the full decode.

@27Bslash6 Agreed. The size cap runs before both decodes. Invalid format UTF-8 makes decode_one_pass return None, so decode_envelope_full determines the rejection and its message.

The repeated validation is bounded and occurs only on rejected input. Removing it does not justify changing that error path. I withdraw the follow-up. No change is needed.

…zero-allocation read

The decode_envelope_full rustdoc now names it the fallback behind decode_envelope's size cap, and its cold comment and extract_payload's out-of-line comment name every caller. The README limits "every input gets their result and error" to input within the size cap. The size-cap and ratio allocation test now asserts the read requests nothing, and names the test that shows the probe counts inside a read.
With the one-pass decode, a second caller costs retrieve 26 to 27 Ir/op at 40 B to 1 KiB under fat LTO (2.8% at 40 B, rustc 1.99.1), measured by building perf_ir with and without the retrieve_data case. The figure merged from main, 68 to 77, was measured on the pre-scan plus serde decode, which reproduces at 67 to 72 on rustc 1.99.1.

Nitpick Add a large-bin reject case to the read allocation check.

138-145: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a large-bin reject case to the read allocation check.

The zero-allocation check in size_cap_and_ratio_reads_allocate_less_than_original_size covers two reject vectors. Both have a 1,000 B compressed_data, which is below LARGE_PAYLOAD (64 KiB). No read-side allocation assertion covers an envelope with a bin payload at or above LARGE_PAYLOAD that ends before format. A read that copies such a payload before it rejects the envelope would still pass.

Add a reject vector to tests/vectors/wire-format.json. Its bin payload must be at or above LARGE_PAYLOAD, and its envelope must end before format. In src/read_allocation_probe.rs, assert that the bytes requested for that vector are below LARGE_PAYLOAD. Use a bound rather than zero, because this check does not show that the missing-format error path allocates nothing.

Add a reject vector to the wire-format test vectors with a bin payload at least
LARGE_PAYLOAD in size and an envelope that ends before format. In
size_cap_and_ratio_reads_allocate_less_than_original_size, check that this
vector’s requested allocation bytes are below LARGE_PAYLOAD, not zero, so a
payload copy before rejection fails the check.

@coderabbitai Declining the large-bin reject vector here: tests/vectors/wire-format.json is vendored from the protocol repo and sha256-pinned, so a new vector lands there first, and the property already holds by construction: the one-pass decode copies a payload only after it has read the whole envelope, and the fallback's pre-scan rejects a truncated envelope before decoding.

@27Bslash6 Agreed. I checked the decode order and fixture documentation.

  • decode_one_pass calls borrow_below_large only after reading all four fields and validating the format’s UTF-8.
  • The fallback runs the structural pre-scan before rmp_serde::from_slice.
  • README.md confirms that tests/vectors/wire-format.json is vendored and sha256-pinned.

The truncated-envelope case does not expose an early payload copy. I withdraw the request to add the vector here. No change is needed.

Repo: cachekit-io/cachekit-core PR: 57
File: tests/dual_decode.rs:72-90

Learning: In cachekit-core’s MessagePack envelope codec, `StorageEnvelope::compressed_data` remains a plain `Vec<u8>` during the Protocol 1.1 readers-first rollout. With locked rmp-serde 1.3.x, `rmp_serde::from_slice` decodes MessagePack `bin` into this field through its slice-backed sequence fallback, whereas reader-based deserialization such as `from_read` has different byte-buffer behaviour. The `serde_bytes` annotation is intentionally deferred to the Protocol 1.1 writer-flip stage; dual-decode tests must continue to verify the current `from_slice` and `ByteStorage::retrieve()` paths against legacy and bin vectors.
