Update the stale Pi effort description.

Lines 98-100 now say that Pi runs in RPC mode. Line 127 still says that effort maps to "the AgentSession thinking-level control". That in-process API is no longer used. The runtime now sends RPC set_thinking_level. In the same way, docs/configuration.md lines 226-229 list process-level overrides but leave out PI_COMMAND.

Update the Pi entry in the effort mapping to describe the RPC set_thinking_level

to the process-level overrides listed in the configuration documentation.

P1 System Pi is rejected

If pi is installed on PATH but the package is absent and PI_COMMAND is unset, this check marks Pi unavailable even though the runtime can launch that executable. Preflight rejects Pi runs and its enabled profiles disappear. Availability must agree with the runtime before merging.

Knowledge Base Used: Agent discovery, availability, and profiles

Artifacts

System Pi discovery and runtime reproduction script

  • The authored script isolates availability from the installed package and exercises discovery, preflight, profile visibility, and a simulated RPC turn.

Run without a Pi command override

  • Running the script from `/home/user/repo` without `PI_COMMAND` exited 0 and showed rejected availability alongside a successful system-executable RPC turn.

Run with an explicit Pi command override

  • Running the same script from `/home/user/repo` with `PI_COMMAND=pi` exited 0 and showed passing preflight and a visible profile without changing production code.

Add an error listener to child.stdin.

The constructor listens for error on child, but not on child.stdin. Pi can exit or close stdin while write() is still pending. Examples are a crash, an OOM kill, or a race with close(). Node then calls the write callback with EPIPE. Node also emits error on the stdin stream. That event has no listener, so it becomes an uncaught exception and crashes the DevSpace daemon. Only this one runtime should fail.

P1 Pi diagnostics can stall responses

The child’s stderr is piped but never consumed. If Pi or an extension writes enough diagnostics, the pipe fills and blocks the child before it can send its RPC response, causing the agent turn to time out. The pipe must be drained before merging.

Knowledge Base Used: Agent runtime and provider adapters

Artifacts

Executable child-diagnostics RPC contract check

  • This authored test spawns a child that writes diagnostics before responding and compares the shipped transport with a drain-only variant without editing production code.

RPC timeout with the shipped undrained stderr pipe

  • The executed check captured its command, working directory, exit code, and 1200 ms RPC timeout with the shipped transport.

Successful RPC response with stderr drained

  • The same executed check captured its command, working directory, exit code, and successful response in 21 ms with a temporary drain-only variant.

Drain or redirect the child's stderr.

stdio pipes stderr, but nothing reads child.stderr. A pipe buffer holds about 64 KiB. Pi, extensions, or the tools Pi runs can write warnings or logs to stderr. When the buffer fills, Pi blocks on its next stderr write. The RPC process then stops answering, and the turn ends only at the 5-minute timeout. The stderr text is also lost, so a startup failure shows only an exit code.

Drain stderr into a small bounded buffer. Include the buffered text in the exit error from fail().
