Summary

The ChatGPT preset currently recommends GPT-5.5 and offers three other models retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in. New subscription profiles now default to gpt-6.1-sol; the fallback suggestions are Sol, Terra, Astra, and Luna. The discovery compatibility value is updated to 0.159.0, the documented Codex CLI floor for GPT-6.1 Terra.

The model catalog remains a set of suggestions; account availability comes from authenticated discovery. Existing saved profile names and model selections are preserved.

Vendor references

Checked against official OpenAI documentation on October 27, 2026:

Value Vendor evidence
gpt-6.1-sol (new default and suggestion) Models: recommended models and GPT-5.5 retirement: the CLI model ID is listed, and Sol is the replacement for GPT-5.5 on supported paid plans when available.
gpt-6.1-terra Models: recommended models: the CLI model ID is listed for Terra.
gpt-6-astra Models: recommended models: the CLI model ID is listed for Astra.
gpt-6-luna Models: recommended models: the CLI model ID is listed for Luna.
client_version=0.159.0 Models: choose a model: GPT-6.1 Terra requires Codex CLI 0.159.0 or later.

The same page documents the retirements of GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, GPT-5.4-mini, and GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark from ChatGPT-authenticated Codex. Availability still varies by account and plan.

Linked issue

Refs #1177 — defaults portion of the approved two-PR split.

This branch is independently based on main; the discovery bug fix is in #1178.

Verification

From this branch on macOS arm64, using Go 1.26.10 from go.mod:

  • make fmt-check
  • go vet ./...
  • go test -p 4 ./...
  • Focused race tests for new-profile defaults, retained saved selections, curated model IDs, the wizard model set, the compatibility query value, and the exact model ID returned by the live probe
  • go run ./cmd/zero-release build
  • go run ./cmd/zero-release smoke
  • make vulncheck
  • git diff HEAD --check
  • make lint-static: four existing staticcheck findings outside this change (installtest, proxydial twice, tools/web_fetch), with no new findings

Full-suite validation uses temporary user directories and encrypted file credential storage.

Regression evidence

With the production defaults restored to current main, the new/updated tests fail:

chatgpt models missing "gpt-6.1-sol"; got []string{"gpt-5.5", "gpt-5.4", "gpt-5.4-mini", "gpt-5.3-codex-spark"}

client_version = "0.146.0", want documented GPT-6.1 Terra compatibility floor 0.159.0

The saved-selection subtest passes on both versions; the new-profile subtest fails on the old version. With the updated defaults, all pass.

Checklist

  • Parent issue has issue-approved.
  • Every new model ID and the compatibility version cite the vendor page.
  • Existing saved selections are covered by a regression test.
  • Required checks and relevant focused race tests completed.

Maintainer review follow-up

Adjusted Terra's suggestion description to “fast model for writing, visual understanding, and computer use,” matching the vendor description noted in review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Refreshed the suggested ChatGPT models with four GPT-6 options, replacing older GPT-5 suggestions.
    • New ChatGPT profiles now default to GPT-6.1 Sol. Existing profiles with a saved model retain their selection.
    • Updated ChatGPT model discovery compatibility to support the current protocol version and recognize newer model names, including models not previously listed in the curated suggestions.

Replace retired preset suggestions with vendor-documented Sol, Terra, Astra, and Luna IDs. Update the Codex discovery compatibility floor for Terra and verify that saved model selections are retained.

Walkthrough

The ChatGPT default model and curated suggestions now use GPT-6 model IDs. The default discovery client version changes to 0.159.0. Tests cover the updated values, discovery requests, and preservation of a saved model selection.

Assert the returned model slug in the compatibility test.

The test discards the Discover result and checks only err. A non-empty result with a different model ID, such as a fixed fallback list returned with a nil error, would still pass. Asserting the returned slug covers that case.

Checked the ids against the OpenAI models page today. Sol is the named GPT-5.5 replacement on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Terra, Astra and Luna are all listed for the Codex CLI, and the page says Terra needs Codex CLI 0.159.0 or later, so the default, the list and the client version line up. Saved selections are left alone and the new config test pins that. Affected packages pass here on 9bda172.

One nit: the page pitches Terra at writing, visual understanding and computer use rather than coding, so "fast visual and coding model" overstates it a little. Not blocking.

Free and Go plans get Luna rather than Sol on the same page, so a static default can't suit every account. That's fine as long as the picker shows what the account actually has, which is what #1178 does.
