🎯 Changes

After a scrollToIndex / scrollToEnd / reconcile write, scrollOffset keeps the old position until the scroll event reads the write back, and the rows on screen are still the ones rendered for it. A resize in that window was compensated against the old position. Scrolling up with scrollToIndex could jump back to the old position plus the delta, and reconcile (target unchanged) never rewrote it until the 5s safety valve. Reported in #1307 and confirmed in real iOS Safari there; it happens on every platform.

 _scrollToOffset(offset, { adjustments, behavior })
+  _lastWrittenOffset = behavior === 'smooth' ? null : offset + adjustments
 scroll event
+  _lastWrittenOffset = null

 resizeItem
+ if a scroll state is active
+ and scrollOffset doesn't reflect _lastWrittenOffset yet
+ skip compensation (reconcileScroll retargets from fresh measurements next frame)
   else
     compensate as before

 scrollBy
-  base = getScrollOffset()
+  base = _lastWrittenOffset ?? getScrollOffset()

Compensation writes, the prepend anchor sync and the iOS flush keep scrollOffset in step with what they write, so they never trigger the skip.

Approach tried first: classifying those resizes against the written offset instead of skipping them. It regressed the chat examples (Marko "does NOT follow appends while reading history" 17/20, 28/28 on main): during scrollToEnd the rows at the old position were compensated, the end target kept moving, the pin never landed, and a user scroll couldn't interrupt it (the pull-back in #1307). Skipping avoids guessing about rows that belong to another position.

Evidence

Case main this PR
Scroll up 2000 → row 20, row 30 (below target) grows before the read-back 2050, stuck until the 5s valve 1000
Same, row 10 (above target) grows 2050, then 1050 next frame 1050
scrollToEnd, rows at the old position measured before the read-back 4800 4800 (the first approach: 4700)
anchorTo: 'end' at the end, scrollToIndex(20), last row grows before the read-back 4800, stuck 1000
scrollBy(100) right after scrollToIndex(20) 100 1100
#1308: "a resize classified against the stale offset does not overwrite the index scroll" test.fails passes, .fails removed

Merge Danger

Door: two-way. One field and one guard in resizeItem; easy to revert.

Blast Radius: resize compensation on all platforms, only in the frame between a scroll command's write and its scroll event, and only while a scroll state is active. A correction main wrote in that window now arrives one frame later through reconcile (main's value there was computed from the stale offset). If the scroll ends before that frame (cancel, gesture, safety valve), the skipped delta is lost; on main the whole command was.

Related, not changed here: the pull-back of a never-landed index scroll and the iOS deferral cases, tracked in #1307.

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved scroll consistency when items resize before a requested scroll position is reported, helping preserve the intended position.

…ead-back to reconcile

After a scrollToIndex/scrollToEnd/reconcile write, `scrollOffset` keeps the
old position until the scroll event reads the write back, and the rows on
screen are still the ones rendered for it. A resize in that window was
compensated against the old position: scrolling up with scrollToIndex could
jump back to the old position plus the delta, and reconcile (target
unchanged) never rewrote it until the 5s safety valve.

Track the offset of the last non-smooth write until its read-back. While a
scroll state is active and `scrollOffset` doesn't reflect that write yet,
skip resize compensation: reconcileScroll retargets from fresh measurements
on the next frame. Compensation writes and the prepend anchor sync update
`scrollOffset` eagerly, so they are unaffected. scrollBy builds on the
written offset, so a scrollBy right after a scroll command adds to its
target.

Classifying those resizes against the written offset instead was tried and
regressed the chat examples: during scrollToEnd the rows at the old
position were compensated, the end target kept moving, and a user scroll
could no longer interrupt the never-landed pin.

Adds tests/ios-differential.test.ts, which runs scripted event sequences on
an iOS and a non-iOS virtualizer and checks they settle at the same offset
without needing the safety valve (TanStack#1307).

Reviewed at 0aea1bd. The fix does what it says, and I found one regression in the scrollBy change.

The fix, in real browsers. Plain-DOM list on virtual-core (100 rows of 50px, viewport 200), at scrollTop 2000. Inside one requestAnimationFrame: scrollToIndex(20, { align: 'start' }) and row 37 (above the viewport) grows 50 → 100, so the ResizeObserver delivers before the scroll event. Same result in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit (Playwright 1.56.1):

after 1.2s after 6.7s
main 2050, scroll state still alive 2050
this PR 1000, row 20 at the top 1000

The tests cover the change: removing the awaitingCommandReadBack guard fails 6 tests, and each of the other hunks fails one, except the cleanup() reset, as you say.

Regression: scrollBy at the top and bottom edge. A write that does not move the element fires no scroll event, so _lastWrittenOffset is never cleared and the next scrollBy builds on it. Same page, fixed rows, max 4800, same result in the three browsers:

Sequence (300ms between calls) main this PR
at the end: scrollBy(100), then scrollBy(-100) 4700 4800
at the top: scrollBy(-100), then scrollBy(100) 100 0
at the end: scrollBy(100), wait 6s, scrollBy(-100) 4700 4800

Each extra push past the edge needs one more call to undo: three scrollBy(100) at the end and it takes four scrollBy(-100) to move. The 6s row shows it outlives the scroll state.

Clamping the target fixed the three rows in a core-level model and the suite on this branch still passes:

-    const offset = (this._lastWrittenOffset ?? this.getScrollOffset()) + delta
+    const offset = this.getOffsetForAlignment(
+      (this._lastWrittenOffset ?? this.getScrollOffset()) + delta,
+      'start',
+    )

It does not cover a write the browser ignores. With an iOS UA and a finger down, an ignored scrollToIndex(20) at 2000 followed by no scroll event leaves the field at 1000 after the safety valve has dropped the scroll state, and a later scrollBy(100) goes to 1100 instead of 2100 (simulated, not on a device). Clearing the field wherever scrollState is set to null would cover that too.

Minor: the comment in resizeItem. "while the scroll state lives, reconcileScroll retargets from fresh measurements next frame" holds for index scrolls only. For scrollBy / scrollToOffset there is nothing to retarget, so the skipped delta is lost. Simulated, at 2000 with row 10 growing 50px before the read-back:

main this PR
scrollBy(100) 2050 (the command is overwritten) 2100, content moved 50px instead of 100
scrollToOffset(2100) 2050 2100

The PR is better than main in both rows, so this is about the wording, or about applying the delta on top of the written offset for relative scrolls if you want scrollBy to mean 100px of content.

No regression otherwise. In a frame-loop model of scroll event → rAF → ResizeObserver, 34,200 uninterrupted scrollToIndex runs (four size profiles, all alignments, lanes: 2, gap and paddings, anchorTo: 'end', a custom adjust predicate, ResizeObserver-only measuring) land the target row at the same place in the viewport as main, except 58 two-lane cases where main sits about 450px off until the safety valve and this PR lands. The react-virtual e2e suite shows no failure that main does not also show; numbers are in #1307.

…e scroll state

A scrollBy past either edge recorded an offset the browser clamped back to
where the element already was. No scroll event fired, so the next scrollBy
built on the unreachable offset and one call was swallowed per extra push.
Clamp the target, and clear the written offset wherever the scroll state is
dropped (safety valve, settle, cancelScroll) so a write the browser ignored
does not outlive its command.

Also correct the resizeItem comment: only index and end targets are
retargeted by reconcile; an offset target lands where it was written.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The written offset only matters while a scroll command is in flight, which
the resizeItem guard already requires. Storing it on ScrollState drops it
with the state (settle, safety valve, cancelScroll, a replaced command,
cleanup) instead of resetting a separate field at each of those sites.

Preserve above-viewport compensation for a pending scrollBy.

If scrollBy(100) writes 2100 from 2000, and a row above both positions grows by 50 before read-back, awaitingCommandReadBack skips the eligible adjustment. Reconciliation keeps the offset target at 2100. The visible content shifts by 50 instead of retaining its anchor. Carry that delta into the pending relative target without applying a compensation write against the stale offset.

Keep an applied position available after cancelScroll.

If scrollToIndex(20) writes 1000 and cancelScroll() runs before its scroll event, scrollOffset still holds the old position. Clearing _lastWrittenOffset makes an immediate scrollBy(100) write 100 instead of 1100. Preserve or read back the applied position on cancellation, while still discarding a write the browser ignored. Add a test for cancellation after an applied write without read-back.
