The public API of @tanstack/ai-harness is now sealed before it ships. Session, client, and view methods take one object in the same shapes, harness-first calls keep fn(harness, options), ctx.harness is always present, the root export is smaller with subpath entry points, and host options are grouped per concern. No runtime behavior changes. This is PR 2 of the harness redesign stack for #1755. It targets #1807 (feat/harness-log-store-v2).

🎯 Changes

One-object calls. The session's tool, command, reset, resolve, cancel, configure, putMedia, and loadMedia, plus applyInput. The client and the view use the same shapes, so createSessionView(session) and createSessionView(client) both work with no adapter.
- Harness-first calls keep fn(harness, options): host.open, host.isOpen, host.fork, harnessAgent, harnessText (its remote form harnessText({ url, token }) stays), and runHarnessWorker.
- Also unchanged: send(text, options?), step.do(name, fn), the agent-starting APIs (PR 8 types them), and single-id calls such as getMedia(id).
Entry points.
- @tanstack/ai-harness/server: the handler, the socket, and the protocol helpers.
- @tanstack/ai-harness/oauth: the OAuth helpers.
- @tanstack/ai-harness/media: the media helpers and MediaError.
- @tanstack/ai-harness/plugins/node: every first-party plugin that loads Node (agents, builtInAgents, boundToolOutput, fileCommands, projectInstructions).
- So ./plugins is edge-safe, and tests/edge-safety.test.ts now walks the static imports of every edge-safe entry to prove it.
HarnessSession is a type over a private class. It has no protected members and no internal methods (open, adoptFork, onIdle, resolveForRun). The new session.whenIdle({ signal }) replaces the internal onIdle.
ctx.harness is always present. The harness registers a default through a new internal hook in @tanstack/ai/adapter-internals (registerSubagentContextDefaults), applied where core builds the agent context, with a binding still winning. Outside a run that a session started (a plain chat()), ctx.harness.step.do runs fn each time and ctx.harness.agents.start throws a clear error. package.json lists dist/esm/agents.js in sideEffects, so a bundler keeps the registration.
Grouped options. createHarnessHost({ log: { coalesceMs }, ownership: { ttlMs, renewMs } }), and defineHarness({ durability: { project, reduce } }), so a harness carries what it needs to any host. host.logState({ harness, logId }) is typed from the harness. The handler takes media: { secret }.
Small fixes.
- The deprecated 'run' plugin lifetime is gone.
- A command without a schema types its input as unknown.
- The view uses the core INTERRUPT_PAYLOAD_METADATA_KEY and INTERRUPT_BINDING_METADATA_KEY.
- @agentclientprotocol/sdk is pinned to ~1.8.0, because the agent uses its experimental v2 entry point. The lockfile changes only by that specifier line.

Docs: about 30 pages in docs/harness/ use the new shapes, imports, and options. overview.md gets a "Which import to use" section, and custom-ui.md now lists every member that a custom SessionViewSource needs. Changesets: the unreleased harness changesets are edited in place for the new names.

Commands run:

Builds of ai-harness, ai-mcp, and ai-acp.
test:types for ai-harness, ai-mcp, ai-acp, ai-harness-cli, ai-skills, ai-code-mode, and ai-sandbox: all pass. test:oxlint for the harness, MCP, ACP, and the CLI: pass. test:build (publint) for the harness: pass.
Tests: each node ran the test files it touched against a baseline taken before its change, with the same counts after. The final integration run covered the first 40 of the 88 touched harness test files (515 tests) and the changed consumer test files (ai-mcp 82, ai-acp 21, ai-harness-cli 22 plus cli.test.ts 17, ai-skills 19, ai-code-mode 14, ai-sandbox 28).
oxfmt --check on every changed file, pnpm test:docs, and kiira check on the 26 changed docs pages (57 of 57 snippets).
The last commit (ctx.harness and harness-first calls): test:types for ai, the harness, and 6 consumers; ai/tests/subagent-context-defaults.test.ts (3), and in the harness session-surface (6), agent-runs (21), agent-resume (4), fork (8), harness-text (6), entry-points (7), and edge-safety (9).

Not run locally: pnpm test:pr, E2E, the full suites, the testing/e2e type check (it needs every provider package built), and the last 48 touched harness test files in the final pass (the node runs covered them). CI runs all of these.

Known flaky on Windows, also on the base branch:

tests/coding-snapshots.test.ts (shadow git repo quoting).
tests/coding-backend.test.ts > hostBackend > kills a background command (about 1 run in 4; a kill-before-spawn race). It is planned for PR 10.

Manual test:

Run pnpm --dir packages/ai-harness exec vitest run tests/entry-points.test.ts tests/edge-safety.test.ts tests/session-surface.test.ts.
Read tests/session-surface.test.ts: whenIdle, ctx.harness in a plain chat(), and type pins that session.open and session.onIdle are not public.
In an app, import createHarnessHandler from @tanstack/ai-harness/server. The root import is a compile error.

How this PR makes testing easy: tests/entry-points.test.ts pins what each entry exports, tests/edge-safety.test.ts pins that edge-safe entries never reach a Node-only file, and tests/session-surface.test.ts pins the session type, whenIdle, and the ctx.harness default. packages/ai/tests/subagent-context-defaults.test.ts pins the core hook.

Risk / rollback

Low. The harness and its integrations are not released yet, and no runtime behavior changes. Callers inside this repo are all moved to the new shapes. To undo, revert this PR.
