seo: entry page titles and descriptions overrun search-result limits (62 titles over 60 chars, 319 descriptions over 160) #103

Why it matters
Entry pages are the catalog's organic-search surface (" license"). Google truncates titles around 60 characters and descriptions around 155 to 160. With the licence and site name appended to every title and the whole summary used as the description, most entries show a cut-off snippet, and the part that gets cut is usually the licence or the commercial stance, which is the thing a searcher wants.

Evidence

  • site/lib/entry-page.mjs:62-63 builds "<name> (<license>) | Free Game Dev Assets" and uses the full summary as description.
  • Script over site/dist/entry/*/index.html on 2026-10-21: 414 pages, 62 titles longer than 60 chars, 319 descriptions longer than 160 (max 220).

Suggested approach
Title: <name> · <licence short form> and let the site name live in og:site_name only, or drop the licence from <title> when the result exceeds 60. Description: build one deliberately, ", commercial use <yes/varies/no>, credit <required/not>. ", truncated at a sentence boundary under 155. Keep og:title/og:description fuller. Add a page check in page-checks.mjs that warns over the limits.

Done when
No entry title exceeds 60 and no description exceeds 160 characters, each description states licence and commercial stance, and the page check guards the limits.
