Let several copies of the local stack run on one machine - #1557
Developers and preview servers sometimes need two copies of the local stack on one machine, for example one per branch. The second copy failed to start because container names, image tags, the shared network and the host ports were fixed. This PR makes each of these configurable or scoped to the compose project, and the defaults stay the same.
List of Changes
Every host port in docker-compose.yml has an ANTENNA_* variable. The default is the current port.
Compose names the redis and nats containers and all built images after the project, so two projects do not clash.
ANTENNA_NETWORK sets the shared network name in the main stack and in the processing_services/ stacks.
The debugger ports in docker-compose.override-example.yml have ANTENNA_* variables too.
A new README section, "Running more than one stack", shows a .env file and an override file for a second copy.
Review focus
The images built locally get new names (<project>-django in place of ami_local_django). The first docker compose up after this change builds them again.
Volume names do not change, so existing local databases stay.
Not fixed here: the demo data's fixed http://minio:9000 URL (ami/tests/fixtures/storage.py). That needs a code change, so it fits better in its own PR.
How to Test the Changes
Run docker compose config with no .env changes. The published ports are the same as on main.
Start a second copy next to a running default stack, with the .env from the README.
Check that the second copy's API, UI, MinIO and Flower answer on their new ports.
Load demo data in the second copy and check EXTERNAL_BASE_URL and the CSRF origins.
I did steps 1–4 on a Linux dev server with Docker Compose 5.1, next to a running default stack, using the README's .env and override snippets as written. All 13 services of the second copy started, with only the django, ui and minio ports on the host. Those endpoints returned 200, django reached ml_backend and MinIO inside the copy, and the first copy kept running.
The test found two gaps, which the README now covers. Links and CSRF origins need the .env overrides shown in the README. Demo capture images use http://minio:9000, so the browser loads them from the first copy's MinIO.
Deployment Notes
None. Only the local development compose files change.
Checklist
I have tested these changes appropriately.
I have added and/or modified relevant tests.
I updated relevant documentation or comments.
I have verified that this PR follows the project's coding standards.
Any dependent changes have already been merged to main.
Every host port in docker-compose.yml now has an ANTENNA_* variable with
the old value as its default. The fixed redis and nats container names
and the fixed ami_local_* image tags are removed, so compose scopes them
to the project name. The shared network name comes from ANTENNA_NETWORK
in the main stack and in the processing service stacks. The README shows
how to start a second stack with a .env file and an override file.

The Compose configurations now accept ANTENNA_* host-port overrides and a configurable shared network name. The README and override example describe settings for running multiple local stacks.
Changes: Multiple local stacks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Configure main stack ports and network docker-compose.yml
Host-port mappings use ANTENNA_* variables with the existing ports as defaults. The shared network name is configurable. Several explicit image and container name declarations were removed.
The README and override example describe settings for multiple stacks. The override example also makes Django and Celery worker debugger host ports configurable.
Developers running two stacks may attach the debugger to the first stack or need to open the second MinIO console directly. These localized issues are worth fixing or explicitly accepting before merge.

Keep debugger attach ports aligned with the overrides.
If a second stack changes either debugger host port, .vscode/launch.json still attaches to 5678 and 5679. VS Code can then attach to the first stack instead of the second. Document the required launch-configuration changes, or make its attach ports configurable too. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Changed in version RELEASE.2025-05-24T17-08-30Z: The Console now presents only object browser capabilities similar to those available through the `mc` tool. For administrative interactions, such as user management, use the `mc admin` command.
Some of the settings on this page may no longer be relevant for newer deployments.
This page covers settings that manage access and behavior for the MinIO Console.
You can establish or modify settings by defining:
* an environment variable on the host system prior to starting or restarting the MinIO Server. Refer to your operating system’s documentation for how to define an environment variable.
* a configuration setting using `mc admin config set`.
If you define both an environment variable and the similar configuration setting, MinIO uses the environment variable value.
Some settings have only an environment variable or a configuration setting, but not both.
Important
Each configuration setting controls fundamental MinIO behavior and functionality. MinIO strongly recommends testing configuration changes in a lower environment, such as DEV or QA, before applying to production.
## Browser Settings
The following settings control behavior for the embedded MinIO Console.
### MinIO Console
Optional
[Input] Environment Variable
MINIO_BROWSER
Specify `off` to disable the embedded MinIO Console.
[Input] Configuration Setting

If you want to host the MinIO Console exclusively from a reverse-proxy service, you must specify the hostname managed by that service.
For example, consider a reverse proxy configured to route `https://example.net/minio/` to the MinIO Console. You must set this environment variable to match that hostname for the Console to both listen and respond to requests using that hostname.
If you omit this variable, the Console listens and responds to all IP addresses or hostnames associated to the host machine on which the MinIO Server runs.

## Configuration
The MinIO Console inherits the majority of its configuration settings from the MinIO Server. The following environment variables enable specific behavior in the MinIO Console:
Environment Variable | Description
--- | ---
`MINIO_PROMETHEUS_URL` | The URL for a Prometheus server configured to scrape metrics from the MinIO deployment. The MinIO Console uses this server for populating the metrics dashboard. See Monitoring and Alerting using Prometheus for a tutorial on configuring Prometheus to collect metrics from MinIO.

The browser loads static assets and issues API calls to `/api/v1/` and `/api/v2/` endpoints, and establishes WebSocket connections for interactive features (object browser, trace viewer, log viewer).
Notable WebSocket endpoints:
* `/api/v2/objectManager` - Object browser live view
* `/api/v2/trace` - Interactive HTTP trace stream
* `/api/v2/log` - Live log stream
Reverse proxy and WebSocket configuration
When the Console Web UI is served behind a reverse proxy (HAProxy, NGINX, ingress):
1. Set `MINIO_BROWSER_REDIRECT_URL` on every MinIO server node to the external URL the browser sees:
`MINIO_BROWSER_REDIRECT_URL=https://console.example.net
`
Without this, the console rejects WebSocket upgrade requests with HTTP 403 due to origin validation mismatch.
2. Configure the proxy to forward WebSocket upgrades and apply a long tunnel timeout. For HAProxy, add `timeout tunnel 1h` to the console backend. Without it, WebSocket connections are killed after the regular HTTP timeout and the UI shows repeated disconnects.

Use a browser-reachable console URL and pass it to MinIO.
MINIO_BROWSER_REDIRECT_URL is consumed by MinIO for browser redirects. In the second stack, http://minio:9001 does not target the first stack. The minio hostname is Compose-network scoped, and 9001 is the container port. http://minio:9101 is also invalid because 9101 is the host-published port.
Use http://localhost:9101 for the local second stack and pass the root .env value into the minio service:

A test with two full stacks on one host showed that the second stack's
links and CSRF origins still use port 4000 unless .env overrides them,
and that the browser loads demo capture images from the first stack's
MinIO because the demo data uses http://minio:9000. The README now shows
the .env overrides and states the MinIO, debugger and image-rename limits.

Claude says: An independent takeaway review of this PR, plus a test with two full stacks, found these points. Commit e141ab9 addresses the first two in the README.
Links and CSRF origins stay on port 4000..envs/.local/.django sets EXTERNAL_HOSTNAME and the trusted origins. The README now shows the .env overrides, which were tested in a second stack.
The browser loads the second copy's demo images from the first copy's MinIO. The demo data uses http://minio:9000 (ami/tests/fixtures/storage.py:20). Processing inside each copy is not affected. The README states this limit. A real fix needs a separate public URL setting for MinIO, in its own PR.
Removing the image: tags is safe. Nothing else in the repo uses the ami_local_* names. Developers rebuild once, and the README shows how to remove the old images.
Smaller:.vscode/launch.json keeps ports 5678 and 5679 (now noted in the README). The processing-service stacks in processing_services/ still fix host ports 2000 and 2003.
…rride file
The README now has a second copy publish only the django, ui and minio
ports, and remove the rest in docker-compose.override.yml. It also states
that an empty ANTENNA_* port variable uses the default port.

Docker version should not be mentioned here. We should be mentioning the required docker version once when we document the requirements to build the project. The quickstart section recommends 2.38.2 or later, we should just require that (why is it only recommended? Who cares, we just want to know what we are using). If we document the version in more than one place, one place will get stale.

minor: both in this header and the text, should this be using "stack" instead of "copy"? Or "instance" or "copy of the stack"? "copy" is slightly general to me but this is OK if you think it is.
minor: Limits of multiple copies - the 3rd and 4th and 5th as well as the 2nd :)
This is a minor (or just opinionated) doc point, but I'm a little confused by the location and overlapping of docs in docker-compose.yml and docker-compose.override.yml. It feels like adding the comments there seems important now because you just added the feature, but do we need to know about it here? There are lots of docker/usage features that aren't documnented in the comments there. Maybe this should be added, maybe not? I'm wondering if it would be better to either remove it or just say to run a second... see ... in README.md.
Several copies can only be done if using docker-compose.yml, correct? Not the other compose files and most importantly docker-compose-ci.yml? This should be mentioned. Less importantly, why not? This might not need to be mentioned and maybe shouldn't be :) But what is important is how this makes a compose stack and a compose-ci stack interact. If I want to run a compose-ci stack without interfering with a compose stack, do I need to set the name of the compose stack? And I can still only run one compose-ci stack?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
minor: "The browser will only view images of the second copy when...". Technically "fetch" or "retrieve", but in any case, clearer to say that the issue is the browser not being able to get them. But overall you are documenting this, so use which you think works.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Is this correct? I don't understand this, if the 2nd stack is using a different port, what changes when the 1st stack is stopped? If this is correct, then this is OK and doesn't need a change (I don't need to understand this detail immediately).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This line is pretty important and I think it should be at the top of the paragraph.
I don't understand "start it in only one copy at a time" - processing services run alongside in their own stack and the stacks reference each other, right?
"Only one processing service can be run on a host at the same time, because a processing service's own host port ... is still fixed. To start a processing..."
But the ANTENNA_NETWORK part should be in the processing services docs, not here. And this is really docs for "running more than one stack". Maybe this should be section 5 of "running more than one stack", like "5. If running a processing service, start it with an environment value that matches the Antenna stack. See "running more than one stack" in processing_services/README.md". Then add the section there. And keep the "one at a time" part here in the limitations section.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I don't understand what this means by "demo data". I assume that this is true for the simulated instances/project that get put in during the migration, but isn't it also true for anything that gets added to a dev stack that is configured to use minio? So does this mean "all images added to a local development stack" or similar (more than images? is it true if minio isn't configured?
In general I think we need to doc the demo project, I don't think this is actually documented? README.md has "create a fresh demo project" but I think there needs to be a "how to set up a demo project and what it is" section there. I'm picky about this because our demo setup process needs to be fixed (by making an empty DB not cause an error I think?).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I don't understand this, what lines? And should the env lines describe here be in the env example? Maybe with an "optionally, to keep the debugger settings too, use this line" comment?
Maybe you just mean "to keep the debugger settings in multiple stacks, set..."?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
What are the "other host ports"? The ports that weren't mentioned in the env file? So the yml file should reset all ports that weren't set in the env file, and not mention the ports that were set in the env file?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I'm not seeing how volume names are scoped to the project, but if I'm just not noticing that, OK.

Summary
Developers and preview servers sometimes need two copies of the local stack on one machine, for example one per branch. The second copy failed to start because container names, image tags, the shared network and the host ports were fixed. This PR makes each of these configurable or scoped to the compose project, and the defaults stay the same.
List of Changes
docker-compose.ymlhas anANTENNA_*variable. The default is the current port.ANTENNA_NETWORKsets the shared network name in the main stack and in theprocessing_services/stacks.docker-compose.override-example.ymlhaveANTENNA_*variables too..envfile and an override file for a second copy.Review focus

docker compose configwith no.envchanges. The published ports are the same as onmain..envfrom the README.EXTERNAL_BASE_URLand the CSRF origins.I did steps 1–4 on a Linux dev server with Docker Compose 5.1, next to a running default stack, using the README's
.envand override snippets as written. All 13 services of the second copy started, with only the django, ui and minio ports on the host. Those endpoints returned 200, django reached ml_backend and MinIO inside the copy, and the first copy kept running. The test found two gaps, which the README now covers. Links and CSRF origins need the
.envoverrides shown in the README. Demo capture images usehttp://minio:9000, so the browser loads them from the first copy's MinIO.Deployment Notes
None. Only the local development compose files change.
