Preserve the fitted member mapping when a target processor uses torch.cond. On PyTorch 2.14, compilation can return correct transformed targets while losing RecipeExecution._y_locations; subsequent query processing then fails.

Scoped reproduction using SDM's execution manager (not a complete KumoTabular fit):

import torch
from sdm import Recipe, Stype, TableTensor
from sdm.processing import Processor
from sdm.processing.execution import RecipeExecution

class Conditional(Processor):
    handles_stypes = (Stype.numerical,)
    requires_fit = False

    def _transform(self, table):
        values = torch.cond(
            table.numerical.sum() > 0,
            lambda x: x + 1, lambda x: x - 1,
            (table.numerical,),
        )
        return table.replace_blocks(numerical=values)

execution = RecipeExecution(Recipe(target=Conditional()))
def fit(x, y):
    return execution.fit_transform(x, y, None, num_members=2)

x = TableTensor(numerical=torch.ones(4, 1))
torch.compile(fit, backend="inductor", fullgraph=True)(x, x)
assert execution.num_members == 2
RecipeExecution.num_members:
    assert self._y_locations is not None
AssertionError

Give the fixed execution fields __slots__ so compiled conditionals retain their assignments. Keep __dict__ and weak references for custom attributes, and preserve the previous flat pickle format so existing serialized executions still load.

CPU PyTorch 2.14: conditional fitting, subsequent transforms and output processing pass with both fullgraph settings; each captures one graph with zero breaks. Pickle protocols, legacy state and deepcopy checks pass. This fixes conditional execution state; it does not establish complete default-recipe compiled fitting.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Recipe execution state is now preserved more consistently when saved and restored, including state from older instances. This helps retain execution details across serialization and loading.

RecipeExecution now declares slots for stored fields and adds methods to serialize and restore dictionary and slot state.

Changes: RecipeExecution state

Layer / File(s) Summary
Slots and serialization
sdm/processing/execution.py
RecipeExecution declares slots while retaining dictionary and weak-reference support. Its new serialization methods combine dictionary and slot state when saving, then restore state entries with setattr.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: preserving fitted recipe execution state (the _y_locations member mapping) across torch.cond-compiled targets. It matches the changeset, which adds slots and getstate/setstate to RecipeExecution. The title is specific and concise, and it does not claim full compiled-fitting support, which the description scopes out.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem (lost RecipeExecution._y_locations under torch.cond on PyTorch 2.14), gives a reproduction, and states the fix: slots for fixed fields, kept dict/weakref, and the preserved flat pickle format. These details match the RecipeExecution changes in sdm/processing/execution.py.

Use keyword arguments in the multi-line cast call.

The cast(...) call in __getstate__ spans multiple lines and passes both arguments positionally. The repository style rule requires keyword arguments in multi-line calls. Pass typ= and val= to match the rule:

Proposed change
     attributes, slots = cast(
-        tuple[dict[str, object] | None, dict[str, object]],
-        super().__getstate__(),
+        typ=tuple[dict[str, object] | None, dict[str, object]],
+        val=super().__getstate__(),
