Creating and fitting processors inside a full-graph compiled function fails during tracing:

import torch
from sdm import TableTensor
from sdm.processing import PCA

def fit(x):
    return PCA(num_components=1).fit_transform(
        TableTensor.from_tensor(x)
    ).numerical

torch.compile(fit, fullgraph=True)(torch.randn(5, 3))

On PyTorch 2.14, the column-type check fails while constructing a frozenset. Fitted-buffer assignment then fails in nn.Module.__setattr__ while inspecting register_buffer (SourceFileLoader).

Check column counts directly in ordinary and ensemble processing. Use the existing _set_buffer() helper for all remaining processor buffer assignments, including categorical/text statistics and series offsets. Calculations and checkpoint persistence stay unchanged. Keep Standardize's direct check for PyTorch 2.7 full-graph compatibility.

CPU validation Result
Processing suite, Torch 2.7.1 / 2.14.0 418 passed on each
Applicability parity, both versions 1,024 cases passed on each
Torch 2.14 Inductor, full graph and dynamic shapes 8 numerical processors, including Standardize, passed fit/query/checkpoint parity across two shapes
PowerTransform compiled fitting Captures; FP32 maximum output difference 5.13e-4, identical on main with graph breaks allowed

PowerTransform's numerical difference is preexisting; eager fitting followed by compiled transformation matches exactly in this check. All pre-commit checks pass.

PCA, RobustScale and ImputeMean already run with graph breaks allowed. This change improves full-graph capture; categorical/string and recipe paths retain separate tracing blockers. PyTorch 2.7 still cannot capture the generic handled-type iteration in a full graph.

Check the column counts of handled blocks directly instead of constructing active semantic-type sets. Fit PCA, RobustScale and ImputeMean through the existing buffer registration helper to avoid tracing attribute-assignment inspection.

Validated graph capture and Inductor execution on PyTorch 2.14 with static, dynamic and batched inputs, missing values and checkpoint replay. The general check still encounters unsupported frozenset iteration in PyTorch 2.7 fullgraph mode; retain Standardize's specialized check so its existing support is unchanged.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved table processing so supported semantic types are recognized when their corresponding table blocks contain data.
    • Improved consistency when fitting preprocessing transforms, including imputation, scaling, clipping, categorical encoding, and text weighting. Existing calculations and fitted values remain unchanged.

The change updates table-support checks and uses _set_buffer to set fitted processor tensors and execution offsets. Existing fitted calculations and offset values remain unchanged.

Changes: Processor handling and state updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Table support checks
sdm/processing/base.py, sdm/processing/ensemble.py, sdm/processing/numerical/standardize.py
_handles_table checks handled semantic types’ table blocks. Ensemble operations use this check. The Standardize comment changes.
Fitted processor buffers
sdm/processing/numerical/*, sdm/processing/categorical/*, sdm/processing/text/tfidf.py
Fitted tensor attributes are annotated where specified and updated through _set_buffer. The fitted calculations remain unchanged.
Execution offsets
sdm/processing/execution.py
Target, related-table, and feature offsets are set through _set_buffer. Their values, dtype, and device remain unchanged.

Several changed calls violate the repository’s keyword-argument style requirement. This is a localized cleanup with no established runtime impact, so the PR is otherwise mergeable.

Both multi-line _set_buffer calls use positional arguments, contrary to the sdm/**/*.py instruction. Use name= and value= at each site.

  • sdm/processing/numerical/impute.py#L49-L51: Pass name= and value= to the multi-line _set_buffer call.
  • sdm/processing/numerical/pca.py#L55-L57: Pass name= and value= to the multi-line _set_buffer call.

As per path instructions: “keyword arguments in multi-line calls.”

Use keyword arguments in changed multiline calls. The changed calls use positional arguments where the core-library path instruction requires keywords.

  • sdm/processing/numerical/power.py#L289-L295: name the _set_buffer and nested _optimize_lambdas arguments.
  • sdm/processing/numerical/power.py#L280-L281: name the _set_buffer arguments.
  • sdm/processing/categorical/count.py#L95-L96: name the _set_buffer arguments.
  • sdm/processing/categorical/impute.py#L76-L77: name the _set_buffer arguments.
  • sdm/processing/execution.py#L77-L79: name the initial-offset _set_buffer arguments.
  • sdm/processing/execution.py#L140-L142: name the related-table-offset _set_buffer arguments.
  • sdm/processing/execution.py#L186-L188: name the feature-offset _set_buffer arguments.
